Hello B1onde.  I was right there with you today...I can't remember being in this much of a funk.   After the last angry phone call I went outside and looked up....a sky so blue it hurts your eyes, clouds so huge and bright white, the sun warm on my skin...the things I had left inside seem very small and insignificant.  They will pass away and new small sin significant things will replace them and then they too will pass....deep breaths, all is well...

I just saw this post on Tumblr that claims telling children not to "tattle" is "victim-shaming."       Uh.  How about you sit down and educate yourself on what a "tattle tale" really is?  Damn, I feel old.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't tattling when you tell on somebody with your only intention being to get them in trouble? For instance, I hear a co-worker cursing, it's not directed at me or any of my other co-workers, nor am I actually offended, but I report it to the manager anyway, just because I don't like this person and want to get them written up.

Not tattling, would be if this co-worker IS directing the swear words at me, or a co-worker, and I tell because it does offend me, and I want to try and make sure this behavior ceases.

Am I correct?

My take on tattling is the "Tattler" is of self-righteous behavior and does for the sake of doing it.  Just like siblings tattling on each other.  They seek favor with the individual(s) they tattle to i.e. Mother, Father, Teacher, Clergy, Supervisor.  Even though, sometimes the tattler has engaged in the same behavior they are now tattling about. The difference is, they didn't get caught.  Food for thought.....

I mean, if you're honestly being hurt by someone and you tell someone about it, that's not "tattling."  But always sticking your nose in where it doesn't belong and "telling" on others when no one is being harmed is just crappy.

Exactly. It seems every job has that one person that runs and tells the boss for every minor infraction, such as having a drink with you on the sales floor, or something of equally minor importance that doesn't hurt anyone. In my experience, it's usually to gain favor with the supervisors/managers(You'll notice a sudden increase in this behavior when a promotion becomes open). I have seen it backfire quite a bit though, which is always nice.

This brings me to another thing that grinds my gears.  The word "respect."    To me, this word means  "treating someone like a person," but it's often used to mean "treating someone like an authority."  So, when a person in a position of authority says, "Respect me, and I will respect you," I often hear "Treat me like an authority and I will treat you like a person."

Excuse me?  Just because you have some social label like "boss" or "supervisor" doesn't mean you have a magical power ordained by the Flying Spaghetti Monster to treat another human being like a lesser creature.  If the world was ending right now, your title wouldn't mean a damn thing, so how about you just sit down?  Treat others as you would like to be treated, not the way some label says you "should" treat them.
