Title: I know it’s impractical, but is it impossible?
Post by: Lady Revan on March 06, 2019, 01:53:09 AM
So I’ve run into somewhat of a dilemma. I have an LED module where all of the individual components fit inside the hilt I’m working with (Heatsink, LED itself, Lens). However, the LED module casing makes it slightly too wide for the hilt I’m working with (not US so I cannot post).

My question is: is it possible to remove just the casing from an LED module? I realize that the “practical” solution is just to get the LED, Heatsink and lends seperstely and not use the module at all, but funds are limited until I find a new roommate because I’m paying double what I otherwise would for rent. Hence, I would rather use the LED I already have it remotely possible. And if it is possible, how do I remove this blasted casing?

Hello Lady Revan,

I have a suspicion I know the hilt you are referring to, it might be that the LED module casings you have are 1inch diameter, while the inside diameter of the hilt is only 7/8inch. If this is the case you could buy new 7/8in module cases and heatsinks and use those instead. It wouldn't be advised to use the LEDs without the casings or heatsinks as they form part of the heat dispersing system to keep the LED cool and prevent overheating and burnt out led stars (the LED conducts heat into the heatsink and the module and dissipates that excess heat out through contact with the hilt handle).

Hope this helps and PM me if you need more assistance ok.

Sent you a PM, For. It's the one you think it is. Heatsink itself fits fine. The casing around it is the too large portion

Ok then. It could just be that the module was manufactured to the wrong tolerance (it is exactly 1in diameter rather than 0.99 of an in) You may be able to sand the housing down a little if you have a Dremel, belt or drum sander but if not maybe there is a friendy auto shop that might be able to sand/shave it down for you.
Be aware this might be a bit tougher if it is a housing with the lip around it.
