Yeah, in America it's a very inoffensive term for "bottom," one that you can use around little kids with no shame, just as you'd say "bum" in the UK.

Berk, I learned relatively recently, is not quite as innocent as one might assume. I'd used it since primary school myself without ever encountering serious objection, but it's taken from rhyming slang - that is, it's a diminution of Berkshire Hunt...

really? I never knrw that. You learn something nrw every day! I wonder how many english people are aware of that? As someone like James who grew up using that word i am shoxked. And a little titilated by the amount of times i have used that word! Lol

Considering the Author of the "How to Train Your Dragon" book series is British it was probably on purpose.

I think it was an intentional slight double entendre. According to Hiccup's intro, names in that culture were supposed to be offensive, and Berk is close to "berg".
