Thought about teaching. I always fancied myself that kind of teacher that the smart ones liked because I kept things interesting and the dumb ones hated because I wouldn't take their dumb shell. |

Thought about teaching. I always fancied myself that kind of teacher that the smart ones liked because I kept things interesting and the dumb ones hated because I wouldn't take their dumb shell.
I often got along well with those teachers when I was in school--the ones that people hated because they were challenging. Now, some teachers were jerks, bullies, or power trippers, and I was usually quick to end up falling out with those. But the ones who were tough but fair...I LOVED those regardless of what anyone else thought. |

Yes, I was this way to. I think it tells a lot about a student's character and work-ethic. The students that hated the challenge were often lazy and really had to to be put right over the flame to actually DO something. |

Ha, teaching.
There's a reason I'll only teach practical field skills instead of classroom learning.
Though on the theme of venting, sometimes students create an attachment to you that brings its own set of problems.

My favorite teachers were always the ones that would actually make their lectures enjoyable, by telling well timed and relevant jokes. I had this one history teacher in HS, oh boy, he was a jerk. The funny kind though, not the mean kind. He was this old guy who basically gave no shell about what he actually said. It was interesting.

I used to be a teacher. Trust me when I say that your "coolness" factor doesn't have a damn thing to do with kids liking you. The administration will crush you for that, anyway. They are Imperial assholes and you are replaceable. Also, kids are jerks.

I agree. As an educator, I battle ignorance, but once you've been taught, it's up to you to apply it. If you choose not to, you're dumb. If you flat out refuse, despite your repeated failures, you're a jerk. |

My problem certainly wasn't with stupidity - frankly if they were taking what they were taking they weren't stupid.
You just have to be a certain type of person to work in the field and personality conflicts are inevitable.
