Title: cosplay 2017
Post by: Tony89 on January 07, 2017, 11:05:09 PM
Hi, I have never done cosplay before I have enjoyed reading a lot of the threads on here I have got some really helpful tips. I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread where people can put up which conventions they are looking forward to and going to where they are in the world and what they are going as. As much as there is a great online community here I suspect most of us will never meet even though we could end up at the same conventions and if you don't have anyone to go with it might be nice to meet up with people from here that you might have been talking to for years.

Sorry if someone has already set up this type of thing and I have missed it and please let me know if I am completely wrong, just thought it might be nice as everyone on here seems so nice.

Great idea. I'll only be to one this year for sure, Salt Lake Comic Con, Sept. 21-23. I plan on doing at least one of those days in a Star Wars cosplay.

I'm going to Los Angeles comic excitement next week. I'm also going to wondercon, anime expo, comikaze, and hopefully the new york comic con. I do a lot of cons.

Really cool. Wish I could do that. I'd go to a con every month if I could. They're so much fun. I'd have to expand my cosplay wardrobe though  ::)

Haha. Where do I start?!! ;D  ;D  ;D

No point in listing them, because no one will know them here. But I generally attend all the bigger name conventions locally in Perth. I also do a few of the smaller cons, toy and collector fairs, and other events as they pop up whether social or charity.

If you want to know about the costumes.... Well, It's a huge list and not all will get done this year due to time and budget constraints, and they are in no particular order:

Lucy Heartfilia (Fairy Tail)
New SWTOR Jedi
SWTOR armoured Jedi knight
Finish Captain Dare (Halo 3 ODST)
Gundam Exia (Double O Gundam- Bandai SD model version)
Belyra Vekraa (Personal RPG and story character- GCW era smuggler, SW)
Mara Jade (black jump suit version)
Agent Texas (Red vs Blue, Mk6 suit from Halo 3)
Double O Gundam pilot jumpsuit (or I might go full on and do Soma Pieras from Double O season 2)
Emma Frost (Wolverine and the Xmen animated version)

That's not all of them either, that's just off the top of my head.

I also have to make my husband a Setsuna F Seiei pilots outfit (Double O Gundam). A new custom Jedi, SWTOR era. A Halo 3 officers outfit. He also wants to do Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist. Titan fall 2 pilot. And then group stuff includes more prop building or modifying for Halo weapons (I really want a turret damnit!), my husbands Unicorn Gundam (coz that's gonna be a buttload of work and we want it in 9 months time) and the biggest and most expensive project of all will be the road legal Warthog from Halo... That one will be done if and when we can find the perfect car and have the time and money :P

Currently Im back to building Gundam Exia. Keep an eye on the costuming section, much to come this year ;)

Thinking about something on the Sith/ Dark Jedi side of things. Really like Savage Opress, but my body shape is alil off 6'1 and about 250 lol. May end up with something generic though, and do the whole dark colored tunic, and pants with a black hooded cloak, and a mask of some sort.

Eh, who cares?! Cosplay what you want to cosplay :) My body shape and height is a long way off the 6'11 Spartan super soldier I cosplay from Halo Reach, but I hardly let that one bother me! If you want to do Savage then do him, otherwise do your own custom Sith and be proud of that :)

I love the pic of your Spartan armor, did you make it? Maybe one day my skills will be as such to make something like that. I have a few Ideas but just haven't found the right pieces to make it a reality yet.

I second this.

So any other comic cons people planning on going too?

Thanks :)

And yes, I made my own armour from foam. The helmet is pepakura and fibreglass resin and body filler. Wanted them tougher to stand up to the repeated putting on and taking off.

Not to double post but.... I remember some of the other costumes I want to do :)

Elven lady (to wear my pretty elven crown with)
Elven woodswoman (along the lines of Tauriel from Hobbit)
Queen Ayrenn (Altimer queen from Elder Scrolls Online- I'm in love with her armour!)
Susan Death from Terry Pratchett's Discworld (and my husband will be doing Death)

First to B1ondeange1 list...those are awesome i really want to see all of them haha.

As for me I only went to my first con (megacon in FL) last year but this year I'm going to Star Wars Celebration! Also first time cosplaying and i plan to do Obi-wan (or at least as close as i can get  since I don't have remotely the skill to make something so looking through a good quality one online). I also might go to Megacon again the month after but not sure.

Same here. I usually go as kind of a generic dark Jedi/ sith, but I'm wanting to possibly go as a Jedi to the next one.

Bought the dark Anakin set today. Going to try a few additions when it comes in, such as a mask, and making some bracers, and boots to add alil personal touch to it.

Sigh, yeah :(

Sadly I won't be going to a US con anytime soon coz costs way too much (never mind the fact transporting big armour sets is problematic, even getting them just across Australia will be expensive and airlines don't do a good job of looking after luggage!), and US wouldn't come to Oz- and if they did for some crazy (awesome) reason, it'd be to an Eastern States con and I wouldn't be able to go regardless!

I will be at the Orlando, FL comic-con this year. Look for me in this costume. The saber colors many change...always a red though. More forearm armor will be added. Just the armored gloves at the moment.

Well that is a pretty sweet outfit! Nice work and that saber staff with the Lost Gray and Bellicose really works well! The emitters on each really sync with each other nicely. Be prepared for lots of picture requests 😉  Excellent cosplay indeed and I'll give you a point 👌

I usually cosplay DC Comics things but have been working on a more authentic Jedi costume that I hope to wear throughout Celebration.

I will also be at the Star Wars Celebration at Disney. Last time I went I got to " show off " some skills in front of a crowd watching Darth Maul and a Jedi spinning sabers. Security wasn't to happy about it either..lol..

He finished the design today and starts building it tomorrow. Only the left arm. After he's done I'm going to see if he can make some battle worn chest/shoulder armor wth some leg armor....really excited!

I did some number crunching and it looks like Dragon Con is too out of the budget.  Maybe one day.  Guess I'll have to stick to the small cons around me.  I'm planning some upgrades to my Kylo costume and other than that I'm running with Jon Snow.

Definitely going to wear my Jedi tunic, belt, boots and probably one lightsaber on my belt with another in hand for dueling whomever I come across (same goes for Salt Lake Comic Con in the Fall), but probably leaving my Jedi Robe home (soooo hot), and it's great for outside in the Winter, but not for walking around all day at Comic Con, that's for sure.  8)

You Jedi are weak. Try wearing about 5 layers of heavy fabric and a helmet in the summer time.

Sounds like a challenge.  ;D  No, really, though, how do you stand it?  I've always been very warm blooded, my whole family is, so we don't do well with the heat as it is, and adding layers just traps it in.  I love the look of my cloak - it's fantastic - but I become a hot, sweaty mess before long.  I wish I had the constitution to not get hot that easily.

Heh, that's why this Jedi re-sorted her outfit so that she was no longer wearing 5 layers with hers :P even in winter it was too much, even though it was mostly medium weight cotton. not that I had a helmet, but my Jedi was far hotter than my foam armour normally is. We sweat a lot in the armour, but because there are gaps everywhere to the moisture wicking under suits plus fans in suit and helmet, so long as there is some airflow the armour is much better. Plus if we are outside in the sun, the helmet is tinted (and im the type that cant go outside without sunnies) and protects your head from burning :D

The Vader outfit with all black and quilted and leather clothing.... Hell no. That stuff is nasty. I've seen my friends come out of those after an outside troop in summer.... Very unpleasant.

I hope to get my saber in time for Comicpalooza in Houston.  I am definitely going either way (May this year).  US will have a booth there.

Fingers crossed for ya, EB. I'm headed to ours here locally, SLCC FanX, in just over 2 weeks, first Cosplay ever, and I've been to 4 so far.  Lookin' forward to it. My cousin is going with me and he may be doing a crossover of a Ringwraith from Lord of the Rings with a Gray Jedi or Sith Lord.  He didn't have a costume yet, but his sister had made the Ringwraith costume and said he could wear it there, but he wants to be a Jedi or Sith with a lightsaber. For the lightsaber he is really fond of the Dark Sentinel LE, and we were thinking an Emerald Green blade. Do you think an Emerald Green blade would be the right fit or would it look better to have a blazing red blade, or maybe a dark violet amethyst, for the costume below?

Wow LB  your cousins got a freeky looking costume, that would scare me at night. Even the hands look good.

Nice. What kind of boots did you buy again?

That's creepy. And omg awesome.

I don't think emerald green would fit. If he wants to look obviously sith then go red, but if he went pyrestone orange or Dark violet amethyst then he'll still look sithly but be a bit different :)

Could always try photoshopping in a saber of the colour you are thinking and see how it looks as a real general guide?

I know, right!? Makes me wanna have a costume like that. My wife might be willing to make that for me.

Lol, loved your reaction 😅 Thanks for the advice for my cousin on the blade color. That's a really great idea, and he's quite good with PhotoShop anyway.  TBH I immediately thought "dark bladed lightsaber"!  You know, the black blade, and so DVA is probably the closest for that but red is brighter. I hadn't considered PO, that's an interesting idea. 😉

So question for you Jedi cosplayers... Where do you keep your stuff while at a con? Curious as Jedi robes and such don't really have pockets lol. Do you make pockets for them or just bring a bag or something? I didn't make the costume I'm wearing to SW celebration and realized my pouches don't fit my phone and wallet. Pics and money spending will be a must so need those haha. Don't know if I should try and make my own pouch or just have a bag for any of that.

Are you wearing robes or just the tunic? If you have the robes you can get a pouch for the back of your belt to put your things in that no one will see. If not, the tunic may be long enough to cover standard pants pockets.

Either I use my leather satchel (which looks the part with my Jedi outfit) or I have a heap of pouches on my belt. One of my friends has pockets built into his Jedi custom outfit with baggy pants that's are hidden from general view so he puts his things in them.

No robe on the 1st two days because I'll be busting my ass trying to get into the kickoff and TLJ panels. I'll have it for the others days though. The trousers I have with it don't have any pockets. Leaning towards getting a bag to go with it since I'll need something to carry purchases anyway (and might hold my saber blade when its on my belt) might as well have something that fits. So now I try to find something that fits an obi-wan style Jedi outfit that's not too expensive any ideas? haha.

Side note definitely see what you guys were saying before..they can get hot. For the most part I'm good as long as there's air flow or a breeze but being in Florida stepping out in the humidity... no good lol. I can only imagine what it is like for B1ondeange1 in Australia... damn real trooper over here. haha

You can just see my satchel there over my left shoulder. Its a brown leather one.

And we dont get the humidity here the same, moreso the heat. That's easier to deal with. This summer has been rather cool though.

This will be my first con where I cosplay, and I'm not bringing my robe, just wearing the tunic. I have one large pouch custom sized to fit my iPhone 6S Plus and a smaller pouch for spare batteries and charger cable perhaps. My dark brown pants have two front pockets and two back pockets, so I'll have my wallet in the back pockets and can put my portable battery phone charger in my front pocket. I may get a satchel sort of hand bag, too. Not sure yet.

The Orlando Convention Center is usually pretty well air conditioned: I've cosplayed there numerous times in things much warmer than my Jedi robes so I plan to have them with me each day. Plus I put in a hidden pocket in the back of the robes to hold my saber blade when it's not attached. I also would really like to go to the kickoff and TLJ panels... I hope that I don't have to wait in those lines the entire day...

Yeah once I'm inside I know I'll be golden just gonna be hot on the way over from the hotel haha. That is a pretty awesome idea though for the blade. My friend and I have pretty much written off those two days expecting to be in line. Though they are supposed to be in the morning...so hopefully means we can have the rest of the day after it...though also means possibly getting up early for the line outside the convention..

That just means it'll be cooler in the robes ;)

This is my favorite of your photos I've seen so far.  I love the little droid!  The lighting and that room makes the sabers look great.
