Mad Warlock

I just got this red Liberator v2 from a grab bag today. I was hoping to get a red one because I had this idea in my head that I wanted to try, but I need help.

What I was to do is weather down the red finish and leave some of it intact, but add black to the hilt to resemble burn marks. Outside of actually setting the hilt on fire, I'm a little unsure how to start. Ideas?

(FYI, the LED color is, as best I can tell, Arctic Blue)

depending how much, you can get a dremel or a power sander to give it a go, i just roughed it up with sandpaper myself but didn't care if the silver showed through.

as for the black  practice this a bit but if you angle the paint spray you can create a spray pattern... i'm not that good at it myself but i also haven't had a project in mind yet..

sandpaper will take some of the color off to reveal the silver underneath? Is this method of weathering better than using silver paint?
