Title: Show Off Your Tattoos
Post by: Darth Knox on January 24, 2016, 05:36:51 PM
Coming out of an idle conversation on another thread, i thought it would be fun to start this one, a fun place to show off any tattoos you have.

Two rules:

1- In keeping with the rules of the forum, let's make sure all photos that are posted do not involve nudity or gentalia.

2 - Photos should be of tattoos you already have or just to about to get.

I think that's fair (unless anyone disagrees?).

Who wants to start us off?

While it has faded, the intention was for it to be inconspicuous.  :)

Really awkward taking shots of your own tattoos by yourself! But here is one my half sleeve (outside).

Picture someone else took a few years ago and it has a weird filter, but I can't be bothered to take a new picture.
It's a trowel. The archaeology is strong in me.

Blurry pictures, but here are mine.  I have my next one planned: the word "fly" in fancy script, somewhere on my right ankle or foot.  I'm holding off until I feel like I've reached a dance milestone worthy of commemorating with a tattoo :)

I'll have to take a better picture of the side and (what I can show you) of the front of this piece, buuuut . . . here's my big one:

Those flowers don't exist in nature.  They were designed for me as a combination of a lily and an orchid, two highly personal things to me.  There's also a wolf with bamboo, fog, and Japanese cloud work and underneath that is the kanji for "Bushido."  I have the kanji for "Orchid" on my chest and those hybrid orchid-lillies around it.  I've got about 9 other tattoos, but I can't be arsed to find/take pictures of them right now.   :D

It's definitely fun seeing everyone's ink.
I'll eventually post my other tattoos too, but I'm being lazy.

Love it Nox, definitely want to see more of yours when you can be bothered to do it.

I've wanted one for a long time, my indecision has been the reason I don't have one. I actually want a few, I just don't know exactly what I want them to be....and I'm not about to go start a half sleeve and then decide I don't like it anymore.

As someone who has about 20 tattoos, let me just say if you want to get one, here are some suggestions (for the first one)

1- Not too big

2- Have it in a discreet place that is easy to cover

3- It should have a deeply personal meaning, something that will never change (this one is key. Many a person has come to regret a dolphin or butterfly tattoo they got on the spur of the moment. My first tattoo was a dragon. Partly because they are awesome, but partly because i was born on St George's Day and i was always fascinated by his story).

4- Thoroughly research the tattoo artist beforehand (it took me 10 months going into the same tattoo parlour every week and a looking at others before i got my first one)

5- There is no rush. It is okay if you constantly feel unsure and wait. It is your body and you decide when the time is right.

6- It is ok to worry about how much it is going to hurt. Everyone has different pain level tolerances, and it does depend where on your body the tattoo is going. But in general, YES, it does hurt. And that's ok. It is always better to expect the worst, because it never hurts as much as you think it will.

One thing to remember - no matter how much it hurts, it is totally worth it in the end.

Be careful though! Tattoos come become addictive.  ;)

TJ and I have talked about this so much.  :D   But just to add to it a little for anyone else who might be reading!

Make sure you love what you're going to get.  I tend to disagree with the "it should have a deeply personal meaning" part now, but there's a reason.   While this is how *I* do tattoos, there are plenty of people I know who are artists and simply love the aesthetic of how a particular color scheme or pattern looks on their body.   The most important thing is can you look at it every day for the rest of your life . . .  literally.  If you have any reason to doubt that?  Don't get the ink.  A passing fancy is never a good tattoo.

Also, listen to your artist!  If they tell you a certain piece won't look good on your ribs because it will stretch and contort, don't get it there!  A good artist is versed in anatomy as well as artistic ability.  I've often come to my artist and said, "I want this thing.  Where should I put it?"  And we discuss it.

And speaking of artists, be sure you vibe with whoever is tatting you up.  If someone makes fun of your design or makes you feel anxious or uncomfortable, I don't care how good their work is.  Leave.  There's someone else out there.  Also, if you ask to see their sterilization methods or question their sanitation and they get huffy?  Leave.  If their work is all flash (pre-drawn shell on the walls) and they have no original work in their portfolio?  Leave.  If they have NO portfolio?  LEAVE.   :D

Once you get it planned out, eat something before you get inked.  I cannot stress this enough.  Have a balanced meal about 2 hours before your session.  Don't just eat some candy and call it day.  Bring water with you.  Drink it.

You might feel woozy or shaken after your ink.  That's normal!  Sometimes, I have what I call "tattoo flu" after a long session.  6 hours is about my limit for chair time and if I push myself beyond that, I tend to feel under the weather the next day.   I learned that the hard way.   ::)  :P

Lastly, aftercare is different for everyone.  I personally use this gel called Sovereign Silver to heal my ink because that's what works for me.  Everyone will heal differently, but follow the aftercare instructions your artist gives you.  That tattoo is literally an open wound.  Treat it like one.

Oh, and save your money because like Darth Knox said, you're going to want another.  ;)

Great tips Nox. I completely forgot about the food thing. Really really important.

In terms of aftercare, the tattoo will itch while it's healing. DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO PICK OFF THE SCABS! It may take some colour with it and leave the tattoo a bit patchy.

There are lots of suggestions out there about the best aftercare for tattoos. I found gently patting the tattoo dry after a shower and then gently using cocoa butter helped me. Although I'm sure everyone has their own tip. Definitely listen to the artist and their advice. This is what they do. They build their reputations on good work and people being happy with the tattoos they have.

A good tip for finding an artist is by asking friends who have tattoos where they got theirs. It can help narrow the initial search down.

It is very important to get something you can live with. but overtime we grow and change. I think the best way to make sure is to have it be something personal. BUT each tattoo represents a point in your life a way of thinking or a personality that may not be the same 10 years down the road.

Also, listen to your artist!  If they tell you a certain piece won't look good on your ribs because it will stretch and contort, don't get it there!  A good artist is versed in anatomy as well as artistic ability.  I've often come to my artist and said, "I want this thing.  Where should I put it?"  And we discuss it.
yeah, it is your artists JOB to set a realistic expectation. if you want something in a location they wil give you what you want but they should at least offer you their opinion of where and what is possible. Take their opinion into account when starting.

LEAVE.   :D
yep! make sure you like the artwork. most tattooists i have met are not really judgmental. they are judged daily simply for having tattoos. so they wont bust your chops for your work. I would like to add that I will NEVER get a tattoo from someone who doesn't have one themselves. I believe that they should know exactly what it feels like to do what they do.

Once you get it planned out, eat something before you get inked.  I cannot stress this enough.  Have a balanced meal about 2 hours before your session.  Don't just eat some candy and call it day.  Bring water with you.  Drink it.
This helps prevent shock

this is your body going into shock. you skin will be pale, cool and clammy. if you start to feel ill then you should let your artist know so he can choose a good stopping point. (usually the line work is a good stopping point, also after any coloring on a section of the tattoo. you want to try and refrain from making them stop mid process on a section.) this is sort of like checkpoints. Don't puke on the floor...  thats a party foul so devinately pay attention to the tattoo flu symptoms. they are your body going into shock. treat this by lightly sipping water, laying down and elevating your legs 4-8 inches. just rest, and cover up a little if you are chilly. this will pass. DO NOT DRINK COLD WATER. it could shock your system and worsen your situation.
Lastly, aftercare is different for everyone.  I personally use this gel called Sovereign Silver to heal my ink because that's what works for me.  Everyone will heal differently, but follow the aftercare instructions your artist gives you.  That tattoo is literally an open wound.  Treat it like one.
I use aquaphor. GENERALLY it is a good idea to keep it clean, moist and breathing.  you do not want it to scab over so keep it moist and it is an open wound until it heals. so you really don't want it to get infected. with that said use your pest judgement if you need to cover it up. you really only want to keep things out of it the best you can. and not bang it around. I usually schedule time off of work the day of my tattoo and occasionally the day after.
Oh, and save your money because like Darth Knox said, you're going to want another.  ;)

Oh, I've had my next planned for nearly a year now, just various things got in the way.  First I was waiting until I could take some time off from dance to let it heal and was having trouble figuring out when the hell that would be.  Then I decided it would be smarter to have it up on the ankle instead of the top of the foot, but there was a money issue at the time.  Then I started thinking that maybe it would be more special if I held off until I hit some speical milestone, but IDK part of me is kind of going "screw it, go for it"

All of my tattoos mark significant things in my life.  Hell, I have the damn Thundercats symbol on my chest because that's a childhood thing for me.  I also have one that is a reminder NOT to do something ever again (I purposefully chose the tattoo to remind me of this) and it's served me well to see it in the mirror every day.   However, I have several friends who are graphic designers and architects that have seemingly randomly patterns all over their bodies because they find it visually pleasing.  It has no "meaning" to them.  It's simply visually pleasing and they will get very annoyed if people ask, "but what does it MEAN?"  It means they liked it and they put it there.   :D   I'm a different person every single day.  Every hour.  Every minute.  The tatts are static, but even their meanings shift over time.  That's why I love them.

Also, some artists don't like certain styles/mediums/subjects.  For example, my artist prefers not to do American traditional, but he WILL do it.  He generally filters that down to his apprentice, who enjoys it and is quite good at it, really.   Find out what your artist is good at and make sure they can work in the style you like.

I'm iffy on that.  When my artist first started, he didn't have any ink aside from one small star on his body, but he had a serious reputation already for a light touch and solid work.  He's got a handful of tatts now, but nothing major.  I mean, there are doctors that specialize in certain parts that they don't have and that doesn't make them incapable of performing the work.  It really depends on the artist.   I certainly wouldn't pass up someone with a stellar portfolio and lots of happy clients just because they choose not to have any ink.   It's kind of rare to see a tattoo artist without ink, though.

It takes approximately 30 minutes for your endorphines to kick in when you're getting inked.  I find that I can only sustain the high for about 5-6 hours before I start to feel off.  That level of tolerance is different for everyone.  Some people can sit for 10 hours and be fine.  Some can barely sit for an hour.

I usually drink room temp water, so the whole cold water aspect of it has never been an issue for me.  I don't like cold water.   :P   I usually drink hot tea after a long session.  I've done the stupid thing and pushed myself past my limit.   Don't do it. You'll feel TERRIBLE later on.  Like Spades said, your body starts to get shocky after a time and it's no joke.   I've never gotten nauseated or felt faint during a session because I'm a masochist and love the way it feels, but it's not uncommon.  In fact, it's way more common than people like to admit.  You don't know how your body will react to getting inked, so if you start to feel sick?  It's fine.  Find a good stopping point and freakin' STOP.

Oh, and save your money because like Darth Knox said, you're going to want another.  ;)
Truth

And don't scratch it.  It's going to itch.  Resist the urge.  Some people "slap" their ink when it itches, but I just ignore it.  Also, sometimes, you'll bruise a bit.  Even the lightest of touches can still make a bruise.  I hear people scoff about "If your artist knows what they're doing, this will NEVER happen."  Oh, sit down.  It can happen to ANYONE, especially if you have fair skin.  It can happen in a 30 minute session or a 9 hour one.  Don't freak out.   Light bruising is normal.   And it's going to be swollen.  It's going to ooze.  Keep it clean.  Keep it lightly moisturized.  It's all part of the deal.

I'd probably have full-on Yakuza-level tattoos if it weren't for my absolute abhorrence of needles.

I like telling doctors and nurses that I'm terrified of needles right before I roll up my sleeves. They just stare at me for a minute after seeing my tattoos, and then they just kind of laugh. You can tell they want to hit me, but they're afraid of stabbing me with the needle they're holding.

BTW, I won't send pictures, but I have shark tattoos, because they're my favorite animal. I get one every time I encounter one while scuba diving. I have 3, and I got my first when I was 17.

IF I had photo shop I'd do up the design I want for my first. But I don't so I'll just have to describe it. :D

It's the Rebel Alliance Starbird and the Jedi order symbol split in half and then merged.(Basically like Nox's current signature, only Jedi Order not Imp Cog), with a lightsaber going through the middle. I'm not sure if I want this to be incorporated into my half sleeve I want eventually, or if I want it to be simply a standalone. I'm leaning towards standalone, as I don't really want the sleeve to be Star Wars.

Quoted same deal

Also, some artists don't like certain styles/mediums/subjects.  For example, my artist prefers not to do American traditional, but he WILL do it.  He generally filters that down to his apprentice, who enjoys it and is quite good at it, really.   Find out what your artist is good at and make sure they can work in the style you like.
agreed, but when looking at artists try picking one that is strong in the style you are looking for. dont use an artist with affinity for new age thick lines and cartoon look if you want a traditional style tattoo. you are choosing the artist based on their ability. play to their strengths.

It's kind of rare to see a tattoo artist without ink, though.

this is VERY VERY personal as a choice. I want the guy or gal tatting me to know what it is like to sit there for more than 30 minutes and get stabbed repeatedly hundreds of thousands of times while trying not to flinch or move at all. I would pass up a better artist because of a lack of tattoos. it is rare but it is also possible. He or she can have no less than one "real size" tattoo.  (I say that meaning that it is big enough to have detail and it does have detail.)

Yes.  All of this.

it happens. for that matter anyone who tells you they do not hurt is a **** liar all tattoos hurt even if it is only a little and even if you enjoy the hurt.  *highfivenox* dont care for the nausea but the rest hurts so good!

I have slapped my tattoos before it works well to satisfy the itch. but I try not to. you hands and mine are filthy. and you need to keep it clean. this is your call. I wont hesitate to do it, unless i catch myself doing it alot. but bruising and oozing are things i would watch for. lines and detail work may bruise, and the area will swell. but you have just severely agitated the area. each person is different just treat it like an open wound, cause it is. as for oozing, I know what you are talking about. for the sake of clarification your tattoo should never ooze colored liquid, specifically puss. the ooze that i am assuming you are talking about is that slime you get on it. I think it might be plasma. (the water part of your blood, not the lightsaber stuff)this is ok I usually clean it and re-apply the aquaphor. i notice it in the mornings and occasionally at night. but thats when i wash it. the rest of the day i am guarding it and keeping it moist.

Nice!!  Love the font on your forearm.

I had to hunt it down. I think its called Blood Omen. and the S is modified to not have that stupid swirl at the top.

I wouldn't say that I'm afraid of needles, but looking makes me queasy...but only in a medical setting.  I close my eyes or look away at the doctor's office, but for my ankle tattoo, I watched the whole time and likes seeing the art come to life.  Nice distraction from the searing pain.

Sort of, just gotta add the saber! I'm either going with Obi-Wan ROTS/ANH(it won't be THAT detailed to tell the slight differences) or Anakin AOTC. I'm leaning heavily towards Anakin because that's my favorite movie hilt. And there should be a gap between them where the blade will pass(but hey, it was just a rough mock up like you said).

+ 1 Scrub!

You could get it one it's own and if you go back to the same artist, maybe have them add more on later.  Just be up front with the artist that it's something you're considering.  I know some who happily add on to their own work, but adding onto another artist's work is kind of an no no

Oh definitely. I think I want it added to later, whether or not it ends up being a part of the sleeve.

Blue, extending just beyond, and make the Starbird red. What's a good color for the Jedi symbol?

HA HA, BlingedJedi!  That's a perfect answer!  +1!

Yeah, Darth Knox, I've heard that, too.  I got my first tatt when I very young (barely 18) and back then, it wasn't very common for females to have ink.  I remember telling my mother I was going to do it and she didn't believe me until I came home from college with a brand new tatt on my right shoulder.  She tried to SCRATCH IT OFF because she was so sure it wasn't real.   :D

Oh, and I thought of another one I hear often that's actually really rude:

"Wow, how drunk were you when you did all that to yourself?"

Usually, I say, "Does it hurt?"  and they blink and say "what?"  and I say, "To be that effing stupid."

My mum freaked at my first three tattoos, but then eventually realised there was nothing she could do about it. Lol. My dad still doesn't know about any of them. It's bad enough i have dreadlocks according to him!  :o I've always wondered what he would do if he found out about my piercings (but that's for another thread).

I don't understand my parents' aversion to mine, considering they both played in rock bands and rode Harleys together.  (My dad still plays, but he can't ride anymore.  He's blind in one eye.)  I mean, all of their friends are these tattooed biker types.  Is it REALLY such a shock that their daughter (who was raised around all of this) would turn out with lots of ink?  ;)   :D

And what's wrong with dreadlocks??! I mean, I am 110% biased because I prefer long hair of any type on a man, but dreads are especially awesome.

As for the question . . . .wow, that's one I actually haven't heard!  But I do recall one incident when I got my first tattoo where this very random idiot sitting one table over kept commenting loudly on how she would just "solve all her problem by getting a big ass tattoo on her arm" in this super sarcastic, snarky way.   I didn't know this person and I'd never seen her before, but I don't like trash talkers.  Rather than get in her face, I simply told the manager, who threw her drunk ass out of the restaurant while she attempted to pull his shirt off.    CLASSY.    ::)

My father is Jamaican and yet he hates dreadlocks. :o When he was growing up he was taught by his parents and certain parts of Jamaican society that anyone with dreads was a criminal and not to be trusted. He took those lessons to heart. My mum, who is from Trinidad isn't a fan of dreads either but she likes mine. But my mum is so cool though. She just wants me to be happy and recognises I make my own choices. So long as I don't kill anyone (although if i did, she would tell me off, whoop my ass and visit me in priosn every week! Lol).

The stupidest thing I've been asked is "why didn't you get a white tattoo so it will show up more?". I could get angry and offended, but instead I grit my teeth, count to 10 and walk away happy in the knowledge that any numpty that asks me that is not worthy of my presence.

Okay, the white tattoo comment is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.   ::)

The dumbest thing I ever had someone ask me was when they saw the kanji on my arm and asked me with a smirk, "Nice tatt.  Do you know what it means?"   No, moron.  The kanji for "Bushido" is absolutely not hanging up in my dojo.  I don't teach my students how to write it and I most certainly didn't ask any of our native Japanese speakers if it was right before I got it inked onto my skin.

I get that. I have seven kanji characters tattooed on me and have had people ask me the same question, or try and be "funny" by saying it means "egg fried rice". Even though that's not even Japanese.

Love my koi fish tattoo on my inner arm. Reminds me of the two years i lived in japan.

To be fair, I've known people with Japanese Kanji on their bodies that only picked it because it looked cool, and have not the faintest idea what it means.....so they have the Kanji for soup on their arm or whatever.

I myself plan to get some Kanji if I can ever get into Kendo lessons. They'll be achievement markers though.

Well, since I've been dwelling on it for nearly a year, really revisiting and considering the idea for a month, and now thinking about it so much the past week it keep distracting me...I'm in preliminary planning for my next!  I stopped by the studio on the way home from work to chat and set up an appointment, but since the artist I want (who I spoke to last time) wasn't in, I set up to meet with him for a consultation after work on Thursday.  eeeeee!

Can I say when Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire came out I was enamored with the death-eaters mark and claimed that would be my first tattoo. I still haven't gotten it, but maybe in the future along with a DC tattoo and Star Wars.
I am not a very big fan of needles. Especially if they are going to be stabbing constantly
How do getting tattoos on the forearm feel like? thats the area I am most interested in.

Forearm is a pretty tame area. I have both of mine done.

And honestly. You shouldn't think of tattoo guns as "needles" it's an entirely different sensation. The only thing I can liken the pain of a tattoo to is having someone scratch you over fresh sunburn.

But that does depend on the area that you get it on. I have both sides of my ribs done and I'm thankful that I won't have to go through that again.

Depends on the area, totally.  The one of my back felt like cat scratches.  The one on my ankle felt like being cut into with a razor and left me bruised, but that artist was WAY too heavy handed.  Yet, here I am getting ready to go on another ankle tattoo.  Oh well.  It's been 8 years.  I think I have more pain tolerance now.  Since then I've had broken bones, appendicitis, danced on gruesome injuries because I don't know how to be smart...

How do getting tattoos on the forearm feel like? thats the area I am most interested in.

the two tattoos i posted earlier in the thread:

the one on my am felt like scratching my arm while it was happening. after it just felt like sunburn   the one not shown on me leg was mostly on muscle no bone and that one felt like someone put a steel bar through my leg (not all the way through just on the outside.)  my leg swelled and it was mildly painful to use that calf muscle while walking for a day.

the one on my ribs is my favorite, it also cost the most and hurt the most.  It took 3, (8,6,2) hour sessions, (respectively) it was completed in sections.  first section was the outline.  then a cig break then then color in the rose. session one over.  session two was just the green parts of the rose. the shading on this was the longest part.  finally the last section was the banner.

This felt like someone stabbing me millions of times. the pain was that I couldn't form logical thoughts so instead of chatting with the artist like normal we put on some music and sat silently. until we went to have a smoke. point is that where you get it determines how it will feel while getting inked.

soft spots tend to hurt a little more in my opinion.

I forgot to mention and I do not think nox did, but new tattoos flake.  its nothing to be worried about, as long as you are not actively peeling the tattoo.  the top most layer of skin and perhaps the layer under it. get destroyed when getting inked. after a day or two you will notice little colored flakes, (hopefully your keeping it moist so they really should look like soggy colored DNA blobs)

When washing my tattoos I clean my hands first and use some unscented soap. some people use rags or papertowels but i personally think they feel like sandpaper on my tattoos so I just opt for my own skin.  while washing the tattoo gently little bits of colored skin will come off.  its ok, what falls off falls off just dont pick, scratch or peel. It can be scary if your not expecting it and it is the one part that everyone forgets to tell newbies.

I went in to talk with my artist and come up with designs and make an appointment, but then when we were done with that, he said "You know, since this is pretty simple, I can do it right now,"  So that's what I did!  Also, thanks  Instagram filters for helping hide the redness and the splotch that I'm not if it's ink that wouldn't wash off or a bruise.

could be a little of both. the ink will die your skin, but eventually it will fade leaving just the tattoo

Well, the grayish spot in question is now kind of yellow, so it was a bruise.  Not surprising at all, my two other tattoos bruised me too.  I, like, don't clot or something.

Got a new tattoo yesterday, a Graflex. The artist is in Austin TX. and he loves Star Wars and song Star Wars tattoos. In fact he is a Lucas Films licensed tattoo artist, yes that's a real thing. Anyway a picture of the tattoo. I have others, o one day soon I'll add some more pictures. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180729/d45a7ee9db5d9c6cbeddbc19292ad49f.jpg)
