I'm not 100% sure if this has already been covered elsewhere, and honestly I didn't feel like trawling through hundreds of forum posts to find out.

I'm looking at making my first custom saber, a staff (cos I love me a good staff) and it's unclear whether I'll need to use a pommel still or whether it's unnecessary due to the coupling.

Thanks in advance Smiley

If you are using a Coupler there would be no need for a Pommel but if you intend to use the Sabers individually as well then Pommels would be needed. At least thats what I think.

If you are going to use them as individual sabers, get the quick release coupler.  These will act as pommels.

It really depends on 2 things. What you're going to use the staff for and which coupler you get.

If the staff is going to be permanently together, than you can just get the solid or adjustable coupler. If you're going to take them apart during cosplay or combat or such, then a quick release will be helpful. Quick release is alot like an coupler for an compressed air line fitting for air hammers, rachets, etc, with a collar that you push in to connect and pull that collar to release the connector. I perfer the flush adjustable coupler on my staffs so that I can line up the buttons and switches for a clean line. It's adjustable because each part that connects to a hilt have gear teeth on them and a heavy allen screw that connects both together. The teeth allow fine adjustment to get the buttons lined up.

Staves are great! Love them and you definately should go for one.
Unless you go for the QR-coupler. Consider buying the standard pommels with your saber. (I think they're even included for free). You're going to travel with your saber. And traveling with two sabers instead of a long staf is alot easier. Believe me I know, I've been traveling by bus and train with wooden training staves for a couple of years, and it isn't always that convenient (for other people).

I say keep the pommel that they come with for free so that if you ever need them, you have them at hand and have the pommel on them when they're in staff form.
