Title: What style do I use?
Post by: Sapherno11 on December 21, 2013, 07:02:17 PM
I know this is a rather generic question, but I really want to know. I'm somewhat familer with Star Wars, but not to the depth that the others on this site are. To describe it myself, I would say its a blend of Makashi, Ataru, and Djem So

When I fight, I tend to move, and not remain stationary. My style tends to be fluid, alternating between powerful attacks, or more finesse attacks, using control to either deflect the opponents blade to miss, or just straight out block. I use the blade and tip on equal terms. I tend to block in this order. I'll deflect more often then not, if can't deflect, I'll dodge the attack, if I can't dodge the attack, I'll use a power block. While the saber is always in motion, I always look for an opening, and attack where the opportunity arises. I also will sometimes force an opening to appear by controlling the opponents blade, making them block certain angles to open others to attack.

I know its really hard to describe a fighting style without actually SEEING it, but even a rough estimation would do. I'm also more then happy to answer questions to help narrow this down!

Actually, you mention blocking and deflecting a lot, including waiting for an opening and using fluidity and dexterity to evade.

In all honesty, I think your form is grounded in Soresu.

Keep in mind, you can blend the forms, using different schools of thought depending on a situation. But we all have an innate core. Mine is Shii Cho as I tend to charge in head first.

That would make a lot of sense...

Because of the way I trained myself, I consider myself a "weapon master" Not in the sense that I have mastered everything, but I can pick up and literally use just about anything and use it effectively as a weapon. Spear, long straight sword, curved swords (both Katana and the Scimitar and Saber (like Calvery Sabers XD) Daggers, various other hand weapons, quarter staff...My style will change on what opponent I fight, and what their style is, the more mine changes to battle theirs.

But doesn't Soresu put a emphasis on staying stationary, as "a moving target provides more openings to attack?"

Then again, if It was a blend of Soresu and Ataru.....

Ah! I'm out of my depth here!!!!

Soresu is pretty active. It's referred to as a hurricane, a moving mass of energy with the user of it being particularly centered amidst the chaos. Djem So is often depicted as being stationary in regards to the other forms

Yeah, I'm reading the Discourse right now, and Soresu describes my fighting style VERY accurately.

The only difference I see is I don't always keep the blade close to my body, I'll utilize longer range strikes as well if possible.

Other then that, its Highly accurate!!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the  feedback. Now I just need to practice, and hone the tactics with the Dominix 2!

Remember, we're going on a fluid description. You don't have to meet every criteria, but the core of your form sounds very form three, with flavors of the others you mentioned mixed in.

Yeah, that's a very good point, thank you :)

I'm just glad I have something that I can narrow down and focus on. I firmly believe that the strength of a warrior comes from within, NOT the weapon he (in my case anyways) holds. However, I also believe each and every weapon can Teach you, even if only a little, as to how to use it. Now that I have an actual saber, I can focus inward, and focus on Soresu's description when I fight, and thus hone that particular skill set, though I will also practice all the others as well :)

Again, thank you guys SO much for the feedback, really helped!!!!

Take this quiz to find out which style you should use:

http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_form_of_lightsaber_combat_do_you_use_3 (http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_form_of_lightsaber_combat_do_you_use_3)

I fight in Ferocity form.

Lol, its an interesting idea, but when you've trained yourself to fight a certain way, that takes priority. Also to be fair, the discourse written about the seven forms seems to have a lot more backing to it then a simple quiz. Again, not that a quiz like that would be easy to make, ts really cool!

My main style is Soresu, with flavors of Makashi, Ataru and Djen Sho.

I just took the quiz:
84% Makashi
74% Niman

While I would love to say I am great at/wanting to block blaster bolts and reflect them back, my professional upbringing has dodging and diving for cover ingrained into muscle memory.

I am pretty new to all of the style terms, so this should be some fun reading.

Mhm, its amazing to read and discover.

Did the other characteristics of the style match how you fight with a blade, aside from diving for cover? (which honestly if you can't see the future is probably the best bet!)

Interesting, i got 82% shii-cho and 54% djem-so, which sounds pretty in keeping. I find that a mixture of K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid) and the counterattack especially useful.

This is especially true for me in a bind, i prefer either to disengage or use footwork to clear my blade, i'm not at all a fan of the contest of strength

The match is hard to compare to what I have learned using sword and shield primarily or bayonet.  Seek cover and return fire was ingrained in me at 18 when somebody gets the jump on you.  NO matter how good you are, so amateur gets lucky once in a while and can get the jump on you.

Mhm, makes sense, although, I could see Soresu being a possible match.

Instead of using your sword AND shield, the lightsaber becomes Both. Your blocks are your shield, and when you see an opening, it becomes your sword once again, until you switch to shield.

I had did consider that.  What I need to do is study each form more in depth, to really get a better understanding.

Arklore, in Way of the Saber someone (Don't remember offhand) wrote a VERY awesome discourse on the 7 styles, and what they are, and what they do. I'd give it a read, its amazing :)

It was actually Master Uilos, who posted in this thread before.  Definitely a great read.

Sapherno,
I have been reading it ;D  No formal conclusions yet on what is really my style.  Some of it is philosophical in how I internalize how I look/think/feel at /when in combat.  In other words, what really were my actions/emotions in simulated combat, what where they in training exercises, and what were they when it was deadly seriously real.

I know what you mean!

Its one thing to read about something, its something Completely different to KNOW it to the point you can examine it, pull it apart, and then put it back together in a way that is suited for your needs, especially something as complicated as Lightsaber forms, or Martial Arts in general

I wouldn't doubt your form being Soresu. Not only that you block, but also the fact that you do not attack and hope for a striking opportunity,  but look for it. I believe that's used in Master Uilos's description of Soresu, and it seems like from what you said, that fits you well. Of course, that doesn't completely eliminate the influence of other forms.

Right! Actually, the Fitness challenge I'm going to be posting video's of me actually going through various training sessions, and after reading Master Uilos's dissertation, I'm positive its mostly Soresu, with my own little blends thrown in :)

man, its so much fun to spar, I'm actually trying to start a saber club in my area, not too much luck though >.<

Hope you get that started! I've been looking for a club, as my first saber should arrive in a few days. Can never have too many!

Lol, too true. I have a Dominix V2 with the silver bands, and love it, but now I need to get an Initiate bacl with the same banding and a connector for the two, letting me use duel wielding and a saber staff for videos XD

Although, a cheap, STRICTLY light sparring replacement you could use is PVC pipe. As long as its careful contact, it simulates a lightsaber blade fairly well

Nice. I ordered an Apprentice v4 on Monday in SRD and I'm literally pacing the floor.

Haha, I was the same way with my Dominix (which was my first lightsaber) I was literally checking every few hours to see if it was delivered yet.

Practice practice practice! In the years i've done of martial arts, the ONLY Limiter on how good you can become, is how much time you put into practice :)

According to US survey:
https://www.ultrasabers.com/Whats-your-lightsaber-combat-style-s

I got the following:

Result: Form VII: Juyo / Vaapad - The Ferocity Form
Also known as the Way of the Vornskr, this form is more than just a fighting technique. It requires a strong state of mind, which is why this is your perfect combat style! You are physically and mentally present in all of your day to day activities, ready to take on anything that comes your way. Darth Maul, Mace Windu and Galen Marek are all artists of this combat style... just like you.

Which saber best compliments your style? The Menace. When two of these sabers are put together, it transforms into a double blade - which is the ultimate weapon for this form of combat. Check out the single blade menace here: http://bit.ly/US-Menace

I need some help with this too. I am very new to Ultrasabers, and my only saber is an Aeon v4 (no sound.) I feel like the only way for me to fight is by using spinning techniques to block an opponents strike/bullet. What form would this be, and what would you suggest to help me with the way of the Jedi?π∏

I just took the quiz and I am form III (Soresu). Thanks for the link!

I've seen all the forms come up on the US survey except Niman VI, anyone know the saber they recommend for that one on the survey?

On the US quiz, I've fluctuated between Form VII (Juyo) and Form IV (Ataru). The goto quiz places my highest result at only 52% - Form IV: Ataru. Form V (48%) and Form VII (46%) are close behind.

In terms of philosophy, I lean toward a blend of Juyo and Shien. Juyo because of the enjoyment and the use of emotion to guide my movements, and Shien because of the aggressive defense with a focus on speed more than raw power. Uilos' discourse article is a great source of information about the different styles, and I agree that learning the philosophy behind the techniques is more likely to give you an answer than taking a quiz (although there are some good ones out there).

I'm very curious to see how I have to adapt my fighting techniques once I'm actually training with a saber - I've mostly done things with physical bladed weapons, which handle a little differently.
