That was part of the contention.  Take the only real interesting Iron Man villain...cast Sir Ben freaking Kinglsy as him...then give us....that.  Total Waste.  But...they did later reveal there is the Real Mandarin in the MCU in a one shot.  He is due to appear in the Shang Chi film.

In my minute of research I gave the character, I too discovered this as well.

I think this was one of the advantages of coming into the MCU with no comic knowledge. I could see them as cinematic ONLY, and then be able to judge if the story elements gelled. For the frame of the movie, I think it worked. I thought the deception was diabolically genius....like Sith level sneaky.

You'll be happy to know that when they made Lego Marvel Superheroes the Mandarin was in fact the one from the comics.....which confused the hell outta me. Sad
