color disk are little pieces of colored plastic, that when you put them between the light and the blade, it changes the color of your blade. there is one downfall and that is the color disk takes away from the brightness of the blade.

Coloured discs are meant to be used with white light LEDs [Adegan Silver in Ultrasabers] which as white light contains all the colour spectrum. The discs then function as SUBTRACTIVE optical filters, removing all wavelengths of light from the full visible spectrum in white light EXCEPT for those in their colour. That is why filters are best employed to get colours or shades of colours that are NOT available in true coloured LEDs and which are pale enough to have high light transmission such as yellow [the best reason for filters at this time] or pink.

At one time in this hobby filter discs were the most common way to get purple but were never really satisfactory since a well saturated purple colour disc subtracts most of the light resulting in dim purple sabers...fortunately sabersmits including Ultra found ways to mix multiple-emitter Red-Green-Blue LEDs to produce beautiful ADDITIVE purples [red+blue] that are bright like Violet Amethyst. If you want purple you will be MUCH better satisfied with VA than discs. However if you want a true "Sentinel Yellow" then right now [Feb 2011] an Adegan Silver saber with yellow disc is still the best choice.

You can use the discs with whatever color you want, you just lose the brightness that you have when you dont have one. My friend had this crimson disc with a red saber and it had a really cool blood effect. So, it is up to you when you want to use them. But white is usually the best choice and your saber will not be a bright. I still think they look cool and they add a touch of personal customization. A lot of the discs you find are usually not offered anywhere, well as a regular saber light by itself.

If you just want green, then no, but if you want various shades of green or other types of the color, then they help. They do make the light a little dimmer, but you do get a lot of customization options. A real good way to be different.

@andilynnwoods: I can say from experience that the Consular Green that UltraSabers offers is plenty green by itself both on camera and in real life, and with less pieces to keep track of.
