Title: All Wings Report In: The Rogue Squadron Thread.
Post by: ThreadJack on January 28, 2011, 09:54:35 PM
Back before the ill fated Random Ranting and Rambling thread went south, me and a few others were in a discussion about the Rogue Squadron video games. So let's continue!

I really like these games, in fact there two of my favorite Star Wars games. Wedge is my favorite SW character to this day, so any game where he is a main character is great in my book.

Corellian + X-Wing= EPIC WIN!

Gold Leader, standing by.  ;D

As the writer of the affore mentioned equation, I am compelled to report in first. XD

So which one is your fav? 1, 2, or 3?

Number 1 and 2 were equal. Number 3 I disliked the non space combat mission, well, actually, I disliked almost every mission.

Number 1 holds the nostalgia and the EXTREME difficulty award for me, and number 2 was a good follow up, what a sequel should be.

Personally, I loved playing 2 as a co-op on 3. XD 3 had several levels I loved, and several I hated. The ground missions were distasteful to me. Though I did like the Geonosis combine mission. That was good. :) Number one will always be THE Rogue Squadron though, the awards were hard, the levels challenging, and the bonus missions sweet. To be honest, there are STILL levels I have yet to best in that game. And I love trying.  ;D

Gold 2 standing by! Though I wish I could have one of those X-Wings like Red Squadron has. Why do they get the cool ships while we get these slow POS's? IT'S NOT FAIR! Waaaaa!

Sorry for the outburst.

I never played RS 1, as I didn't have an N64. I did play 2 and 3 for the Game Cube, and 2 was definitely better. I liked the flying missions in 3 but I hated that they included ground missions. I mean I play these games to blow up Death Stars, kill waves of TIE's, and take out Star Destroyers not attend Yoda's weekend Jedi camp on Dagobah for God's sake!

Actually, the automatic assumption that Gold Squadron means Y-Wings is inaccurate, though common. In Return of the Jedi, there was a Gold Squadron which flew a mix of craft. Including, X-Wings, Y-Wings, and I believe A-Wings. Plus, when I say Gold Squadron... I generally refer to my fan-fictional RP Squadron. Which, by coincidence, is also a mixed fighter squadron.  ;D

I suppose my love of RS3 comes from that Co-Op and Versus mode. My buddy learned to fly that way, and I've logged a great number of my flight hours with him on my wing. Though after so many years, there's really only one level left that holds any challenge for us. Battle over Endor. The sheer number of TIEs that swarm you there make it the most realistic level I've played in any SW flight game. The dogfighting there is INCREDIBLE!

But seriously. we logged so many hours playing Co-Op Endurance... we actually burned up my Game Cube. Killed the cooling unit.

I realize that Gold Group doesn't mean Y-Wing anymore than Red means X-Wing, Green means A-Wing, etc. Just a poor attempt at a joke.

I really wish they would make a fourth one of these. I feel like all these Star Wars games are coming out, but I can't remember the last flight sim. I mean in the past three or so years, we've had The Force Unleashed 1 & 2, The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes, 1 or two more Battlefronts, and that crappy Lightsaber Battles or whatever it's called. But no flight sims.

If it makes you feel better, I laughed... XD

Actually, I have seen some stuff floating around about a 4th Rogue Squadron being in the works for Wii, but last I heard it was stalled before it ever really got off the ground with some kind of legal trouble. Personally, I see no foreseeable legal trouble with making one, what with Wii releases of Force Unleased 1 and 2, it can't be a licensing issue. Unless one of the companies that was involved in making the first three has interests against making a 4th. Still, I see no reason not to do it. The series was immensely popular. It may have something to do with the general seeming distaste from Lucas to touch anything Original Trilogy right now, save for licensed costumes that don't meet legion standards yet still burn massive holes in fans wallets... XP

Seriously, I gonna slap somebody if I don't get a quality OT flight sim soon. lol Renegade Squadron had some EXCELLENT flight stuff, and I loved running up against the TIE Defender, but still.... RS 1-3 had ACCURATE stats on the traditional TIEs AND Rebel Fighters. None of this, lets make things 'fair' crap. Unless you count the TIE Hunter.... rofl

Copy that, Red Leader. Gold Two, close up formation. Lock S-Foils in attack position.

Sorry. XD Couldn't resist...

Copy that, Red 3/4 here, sorry all the good call numbers have been taking

Think the thing I loved about 2 was the co-op with my brother. By the time I shot down pretty much every TIE on screen, he is still flying around trying to find the space fight. Loved it.

Some of the missions on 3 were pretty great, but the best thing was ability to play the original arcade games.
Vader+Nostalgia+Disco Ball=Win

I'd love to, but my Y-Wing doesn't have S-Foils. It has an Ion Cannon though....

I REALLY want to put this game in, but I have to pick my little sister up from school soon, and if I start playing I'll forget her. And "Sorry I was blowing up the Death Star" isn't an excuse that will go over well.

You know, oddly enough... I think I was victim to that excuse once when my older sister was playing X-Wing Alliance... LOL

And a Y-Wing? Ion Cannon? Seriously, can we requisition this boy a B-Wing please? Armor and weapons are good, but lets get some speed and maneuverablity in there huh? XD

HaHa. X-Wing Alliance got me in trouble quite a bit. lol.

And don't worry, I'm only using this Y-Wing cause my X-Wing's in the shop! lol.

I've only played 3 and i loved it. My fave thing was being able to fly the Falcon, Slave-1, the N-1 and the Aethersprite. I still love doing the fondor mission with the Falcon. and the co op was the bomb!!!!!

Title: Re: All Wings Report In: The Rogue Squadron Thread.
Post by: Manroon on March 09, 2011, 05:27:08 PM
Fondor was my favorite single player mission! I used to run that in the Delta-7 and the N-1 ALL the time. lol It was really great to try going through there in the Athersprite without using the sonic mines. (who put those on there anyways? That is sooo not canon... XD)

Title: Re: All Wings Report In: The Rogue Squadron Thread.
Post by: ThreadJack on March 09, 2011, 06:56:39 PM
Yeah, what was with those sonic mines anyway? They kinda dropped the ball on that one...

Title: Re: All Wings Report In: The Rogue Squadron Thread.
Post by: Manroon on March 09, 2011, 07:06:50 PM
The flaw in an otherwise perfect game. The Delta-7 shouldn't have had them at all, and I don't think Boba Fett's Slave 1 was ever documented as still having them. Even if it were, the number they gave it was overkill too. lol Oh, and the TIE Hunter... yeah... have to say they shoulda just ran with what was already around and put in the TIE Defender. I hated waiting till Renegade Squadron to fly that bad boy. Blast it guys... now I wanna play again! XD

I've had that problem, with lots of video games. They give the bad guys un-godly amounts of ammo and you get so little, it's bordering on unfair. I mean I understand wanting to make it a little challenging, but my problem is when challenging becomes unfair. All it takes is a little thought and you can make it challenging and fair at the same time.

Title: Re: All Wings Report In: The Rogue Squadron Thread.
Post by: Manroon on March 09, 2011, 07:56:02 PM
Exactly. You know, I think I've only played one video game level of Player VS AI that was truely realistic. Maybe 2. The first that comes to mind is the Battle over Endor Co-Op from RS3/RS2. Followed possibly by the Ison Corridor Ambush, though that's a far cry from Endor's realism. And the second one I was actually thinking of before Ison Corridor was from an Ooooold Star Trek Game. Ya'll remember Starfleet Command? Well, if you can make it far enough through to get to the level with something like 12 Planet Killers attacking Earth... that's pretty realistic for what's going on I think. Never could beat that level... cost me the Essex too. :( Hung on till the Enterprise arrived though, man that was epic. She comes cuttin' across my bow out of nowhere and saves my arse. LOL

Exactly. All I'm saying is the same rules should apply to all. If my X-Wing can only carry 4 missiles, why should his hold 10? If my lasers need to cool off for a minute how come he can sit on the trigger all day?

And (kids, cover your ears. ;D) Who in the HELL decided that TIEs should have secondary weapons in EVERY FRICKIN' GAME? Seriously! Except for RS1, EVERY game has at least one TIE with some kind of secondary, and in most of them they provide the standard TIE with Torps! Secondaries on the Defender, Advance X-1, Bomber... okay. That's canon and makes sense. On the Squint? The EYEBALL? Come on! Take Renegade Squadron. They made the Rebel Ships with, I'd argue, the most realistic stats and handling thus far. The X-Wing might be a little sluggish, but other than that it's perfect. But they Imp fighters are all screwy! You can't tell me it wouldn't have been 'fair' to give the Imps double or tripple the # of fighters, and give them the crappy stats they're SUPPOSED to have.

Renegade Squadron, who decided to give the TIE's SHIELDS!? What the hell.

Exactly. Can we slap Lucas for the abominations he's allowed over the last ten years? Please? I mean, we owe the guy for creating Star Wars... but with as bad as he's been messing it up, our debt is paying off pretty fast here.

The Clone Wars helps make up for it a bit, but I think our debt has been paid.

Well, a couple episodes have been extremely enjoyable for me. Mostly the ones focusing on the individual clones. Still... you've never read Courtship of Princess Leia, have you? That arc they did on Dathomir and Ventress (I totally called her being Dathomirian when they introduced her in the first show, BTW ;D ) basically through everything established about the planet and culture by it's creator out the window. Things like that have just really made me ticked at GL. He gave the author permission, allowed him to create the world, let it become established and accepted, and then said to another writer 'oh, you want to change all that. Looks good. We can make money on this. Do it.' That essentially is like giving the bird to the original author, and to all the fans that read and enjoyed that first work. He's saying screw you, I'm doing what I want because I can, and totally disregarding that it's not just his Star Wars anymore. it's famous. It has fans. He has to think of how the rest of the world will take new Star Wars material, besides what strikes his whim to be done.

But that's a very long, off topic rant of mine. To get back ON topic, I say we solve the issue by playing Lucas a VS tournament of RS3. Winner gets the Wars. ;D

I never read Courtship, and I'm not too fmiliar with Dathomir other than what we see in CW.

Unless there's something we don't know about George, I think you and I would kick his butt at Rogue Squadron 3.
