Title: Jedi Librarian/Researcher costume
Post by: Whitakker on May 15, 2018, 04:24:11 AM
Hey, so I've noticed that Jedi Librarian costumes are among the more niche/uncommon Jedi cosplay that we see. Since our most visible example of the style is Jocasta Nu from Ep. II and the Clone Wars, I was wondering what the male outfit would look like. Jocasta wears what looks like a hakama style bottom skirt instead of standard trousers. I wondered if that was the standard uniform for ALL Librarians/Researchers, or if the menfolk wore pants/trousers like normal Knights/Masters.

Also, what other cool patterns have you seen for the Librarian tabards? Jocasta's tabards are so distinct and unique; is that something exclusive to her profession in the Order?

Can't believe I didn't see this post earlier. As far as Canon goes, I think the only librarian or even historian for that matter that we see is Jocasta Nu. If we take a look at Legends material check this page out (more specifically the list of individuals on the right who have held the title.) http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Chief_Librarian/Legends#cite_note-TOR-3

I would imagine the male outfit could be just a slightly tighter robe than the classic jedi cloak with his tabards over top of that, with pants. The costuming department most likely included the skirt to make Nu different from the rest of the Order (also with the designs on her tabards) so that she would look more like a traditional librarian I suppose.

Planning on putting together a costume?

^^^So basically just the robe, tabbards hanging over the shoulders, maybe crewneck shirt such as she wore at least, and belt/lightsaber stuff hidden under the robe? I might try for something like this myself actually =] For a black color scheme I already got everything so :P Would the obi go over the robe and tabbards as usual too though for a male look? I know they probably didn't see much to no action at all though so

The markings on Jocasta Nu's tabards and obi are called Ansata markings symbolizing devotion to knowledge and learning http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ansata (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ansata)

Hmm, the Obi and belt and the accessories over the robe would look interesting. I guess when I said a tight fitting cloak I was thinking a traditional tunic except for the fact that it is as long as one of the usual Jedi robes. A "floor length tunic" I guess would be a good way of describing it. Nu doesn't actually wear a belt but you can see her saber there, must be attached under the Obi with something like a D-ring setup (once again, costuming didn't need to worry about it too much, her saber is just a background prop.) You might get away with not even wearing a saber at all, and I know how that sounds... LOL

You gotta walk around with a Jedi tome or even a Holocron or something cool like that.

Here's the Rebel Legion standards for Librarians and Scholars not named Jocasta Nu, if that helps.

Brilliant link, interesting that the only real difference that caught my eye were the tabard patterns. Other than that it's more or less Jedi costume as usual.

Yeah, that's all I saw. That and the option to wear a dress or skirt rather than pants, not sure if that applies to generic Jedi impressions.

I would honestly like to see more Jedi Librarian/Researcher cosplay interpretations.

Me too, librarians, temple guards... there are so many sub-units within the Jedi ranks that don't get enough love.

I agree with you Saso . I’ve seen maybe one Jedi temple guard at a con and he looked amazing.  It was ashamed that he was the only one. Would of made for great guard pictures.   I get it though, most cosplayers go for the movie characters unlike the great folks here that go for their own or visiting a different type of Jedi or character

I guess my next question would be, where to find fabrics with patterns simliar to the Ansata design?

You're going to have to paint or draw it on with fabric marker or paint because its not a repeating pattern but shapes and lines connecting each other when I get home I'll get a picture that I sketched showing the individual shapes

Trying to find a suitable pattern would be difficult, but there are so many designs of fabric out there so definitely possible. Try any local fabric stores, then look online on sites like Ebay.

This blogger actually sewed on the designs... that's a whole new level of dedication to becoming Jocasta. Not massively difficult, but time consuming to the maximum. Pictures of it are towards the bottom, just scroll till you see it. https://doctorofphabric.wordpress.com/tag/jocasta-nu/page/1/

Awesome find Saso!

I was thinking of doing something similar with my Gray Robes: embroidering/sewing the Water Warrior rank in Aurebesh onto the tabards... I still need to check the design to see if it is feasible though...

Interesting idea, Dutchman.  I would love to see the outcome
