Post by: phantom777 on April 18, 2020, 01:21:55 AM
hey guys I know its not lightsaber related but I just wanted to show off the paint job I did
to an x-coser sith acolyte mask. I added red and copper.. what do you think? still not done yet
going to add leds to the eyes and a voice changer..

Looks awesome man, definitely post up a video or something when you get the whole set-up like that voice changer in there. And we have a whole section for "Costumes and Props" on the forum, feel free to post stuff there, a Mod might even move this thread over so more people will see it. Keep up the great work!

Wonderful job!  Subtle without being understated  :)  I can't wait to see the finished product^^

I went ahead and moved this to the "costumes and props" section. It's on topic there and will probably get more traffic being in the right section.

Also, nice mask!

The paint job looks great phantom777. Definitely post more pics when you get more of it done. The leds in the eyes sounds really interesting.  I'm curious to see how you do it.

Definitely looking good here. A little color never hurts

yeah the grey on grey was too basic and the red that was already on the mask was dull.
so I spiced it up a bit.im still figuring out the leds I have them but the plastic portion douse not cover the whole length of the  eye. ill have to figure a way to make it work and
use the leds I got off ebay :)  it comes in a kit like this... but they are made for batman masks, I didn't realize how short the eyes were :) on a batman mask until I got the
sith mask, wich is a lot longer. oh well ill have to make it fit somehow :) I took out the black mesh and realized I had a little problem LOL

as you can see the eyes are longer on the sith mask..

Well if the LEDs ran the entire length of the eyes then you wouldn't be able to see out of the mask, right? Try experimenting with them maybe in the middle then you can add mesh back to wherever the light doesn't cover up. You might have to navigate walking around using just peripheral vision, though. It takes a little getting used to but it's doable.

actualy you can see through these.. a little :)  and when the leds are off you can see thru 100%
they are just not long enough for the length of the whole eye :)
thanks for the suggestion! :)

Looking good.

Yeah, the eyes on the Xcoser mask are quite wide, and the stock "lens" material is junk. Kath and I are still trying to engineer a breathable substitute for the mesh.

thats some cool paint job on those masks :) i like the one on left in yellow best :) and yes the mesh that comes with the mask is too thick and not verry breathable.
then again the led im putting in isnt any better at breathing thru LOL

;D That one's mine. It is the official mask design of Darth Logos. The other is Lady Kath's. She took inspiration off of my design and then applied her own to the Lord Adraas version of the mask. Both are actually her work though.

She experimented with using nylon over red lens filters for the eyes. It created the desired effect of color as well as fully obscuring eyes for photo-ops. On the downside, they fog easily. :(

The best lens material I've dealt with so far is metal mesh. It offer great visibility and breathes well. Downside is, it shows your eyes in flash photography.

This was my second cosplay mask.

There are reason this is THE most popular mask for Sith cosplayers. First and foremost, it's cheap. Second, it's designed for airsoft, so it's durable and has high visibility. Third, it breathes incredibly well. Fourth, it's badass looking.

They all look good, though I'm not sure how you'll be able to see with red LEDs in front of your eyes :)

As for mesh, have you considered window screen?  spray paint it matte black to both thicken the wires and add more non-reflective to it.

Here's a pic of my Steampunk mask, using the wire mesh painted copper for the breathing port:

Related question: where do these "cheaper" masks come from besides xcoser (saw remark that they were based on airsoft masks).

I'm not inclined to spend $70+ if I can source a comparable product and mod it or make it from scratch.

Thanks. We'll experiment with that wire screen idea.

Great looking masks! I think the LEDs would look good coming from the lower portions of the mask too.

If you decide to keep lenses, Ive got an idea to help with fogging, Scuba divers (like myself) will use an antifog compound on the inside of the lens, but most of them do need to be rinsed off after application leaving a very thin coat. There are wipes called "Frog Spit" that do not need to be rinsed. A cheaper method is to use watered down baby shampoo, but agin it does require a rinse after application.

The premise behind these antifog methods, is that the microscopic pores on glass and plastic lenses holds on to the moisture causing it to fog, with the antifog any accumulated moisture will just run down the lens leaving a clear view.

I really like this too, been trying to come up with something similar to Plo Koon's mask but not as intricate and you just gave me some inspiration. Thanks

Thanks!

I should add that my mask is based on Creative Awl's design (I modified the mouth port).  Search "Creative Awl Mask" on youtube for the video and it'll have links to the PDF pattern for free.

It's a good foundation for a mask, adding/changing stuff as theirs accounts for the nose, straps and a flat front surface with distance from thee mouth.  There's a wire frame and blue shop rag filter inside there.

I have an idea for a design based on that one blue-gray medical droid with the gray module where it's mouth would go (for another distinctive Corona mask).

But I'd like to figure out a full face mask for a Sith cosplay like you guys got (especially if it'll accommodate glasses)

cool ideas guys! im still going with the leds though...only half of the eye will be leds anyway cause the eyes on the x-coser masks are wide.
im going to use some mesh but having a hard time aquiring some. im  in upstate ny and a lot of the stores are closed or working limited.
I still have the mesh that came with the mask its thick but it will only be part of the eye. had a question for you all... should I have the leds closer to
where the nose is or have the leds in the upper corner? the one side will be mesh the other with the leds .
I havnt decided wich way ill go yet.i havnt had any free time as ive been working :)
let me know what you think! guys!  ;D heres an illustration pic with the rough idea.. what do you think would look better???

excuse my limited drawing capabilities! I know I suck LOL used paint program.. the final product will look way better than I can illustrate! :)

well I finaly had some time and put the leds in the mask! it came out great.. the leds may look uneven in this photo
but its just the camera angle.. hard to hold my iPhone in a good spot LOL.
I had to go to the edges and not close to the nose, there was no way I could see out of
the mask unless I did it the way that I did. and a surprising effect I didn't anticipate was
the lights also came out of the breathing holes! what do you guys/gals think?
I realy like it and thought to myself.. hey did I realy do this? LOL
it came out much better than I thought I could do LOL :)
