Title: Is the Old Republic actually worth playing
Post by: Xaeyon on December 15, 2013, 10:11:12 AM
I was completely taken with KotOR I and II, and downloaded tOR when it became free-to-play. I started as a Jedi Knight and after many hours of gameplay was still on Typhon. The gameplay was disappointing for me and it just didn't hold any water compared to either KoTOR.

Should I give it another chance?

Sorry, didn't see your post until today...
I hated the limitations placed on you by doing the FtP game, granted, you can still do all the missions, and reach level 55, but the chat restrictions, slower leveling, etc, were a pain.  My wife actually bought my subscription for me last March for my birthday and the game became much more enjoyable.  You will generally leave Tython around level 10 or so (complete all the missions) and move to the next world which will take you another 10 levels or so and there you gain access to a ship.  At that point your missions (storyline) will take you about 5-10 levels per planet (some are shorter than others.)  Lots of complaints are out there about playing the Republic side, slow stories, repetition, etc.  I would recommend giving a Sith Empire character a chance and trying it.  The storyline for the Intelligence Officer is really good, as well as most of the Sith characters themselves.  Several characters took me into the 30's to really start enjoying, as I was deleting and remaking them in the 20's, you can imagine how tiring that was getting.

I would give it another chance, if you can buy $5.00 worth of cartel coins, this doesn't give you "Subscriber" status, but will upgrade you to "Preferred" and unlocks several things so you can use them, and it's just a one time purchase, it doesn't have to be each month or anything (at least that's how it used to be, I haven't looked at it since I am a subscriber)

Since I started about a year ago, I always played as "Subscriber" and I must agree - F2P has so many restrictions, it doesn't make fun at all (I can say that 'cause my neighbours were playing it as F2P before they bought Cartel Coins - and I saw many of the restrictions). Best way would be to play as "Preferred" or - if you can afford it - as "Suscriber". You could even choose to pay only twice a year: $77.94 every 180 days (recurring subscription).

Thanks guys :) I'll give the Cartel Coins a go first and see how that makes things; if things pick up and I find myself wanting more, I'll trial a subscription

If I had to pick one reason to go Preferred, it's Sprint at Level 1.  Makes the early part of the game so much less annoying.  Later part, too, actually; I'd go insane with only one crew skill and no bank.

In theory, you're supposed to be able to play the entire single-player storyline as F2P.  In practice, I can't imagine doing it without going preferred and carefully spending my Cartel Coins.  I ended up getting a sub (after less than a month of F2P and Preferred) because I was looking at how much stuff I wanted to unlock, and how many characters I was interested in, and was adding up to some pretty hefty amounts of Cartel Coins pretty fast.  YMMV, and a lot of my motivation to move from Preferred to Sub was roleplaying-based; if you (unlike me) have no desire for other races, legacy display, title display, hide head slot, and the other five billion minor things I wanted unlocked, you might not care.  On a related note, if you're thinking you might end up as Sub, be careful what you unlock; I'm kicking myself for spending Cartel Coins to unlock Twi'leks when I ended up buying a subscription less than a month later.

I also second JEStucker's suggestion to try a different class.  Personally, I liked Tython, but it's probably the most boring of the starting planets and contains probably the most boring storylines.  Sith start on Korriban; if you liked KotOR, you might try a Sith to see how the planet has changed after 300 years.  Agents and Bounty Hunters start on Hutta; it's a dungpile, but it's an interesting dungpile.  Smugglers and Troopers start on Ord Mantell, which is only slightly less of a dungheap than Hutta.  Of the five classes I've played to level 10 so far (in the past two months!), I'd say Agent was most interesting, followed by Sith Warrior, Smuggler, then Knight and Consular.  (This order has held to level 20 for Agent, Warrior, and Consular.)  If you're looking for a more KotOR-like storyline, I'd highly recommend trying an Agent.

Just a follow-up a couple months later.

First, at the time I wrote this, I wasn't aware of the referral program.  In brief, if you know somebody who already subscribes, they can give you a link that gets you a few things to make your life easier.  (Quick-travel pass, 5 XP boosts, and an extra row of inventory.)  If you don't know anybody, drop me a PM and I'll give you mine.  (If you later subscribe, your referrer gets an in-game reward.)

Second, I've played a bit more of various classes, so I can give a touch more input on story lines.  The only classes I haven't played to the end of the prologue (level 17-20ish) are Smuggler (end of first planet and level 10) and Bounty Hunter (haven't yet played).  Agent continues to be awesome at level 42 and near the end of chapter 2.  Sith Inquisitor is probably my second favorite storyline, although it's less evil than I had expected.  Sith Warrior is next, and it's pretty solidly evil (in case that's what you want).  Smuggler and trooper are next and about tied; I suspect smuggler will be more interesting (more plot twists), but I like the "feel" of trooper better so far.  Jedi Knight continues to be comparatively boring, and Jedi Consular continues to be worse.  I've heard the Bounty Hunter storyline is really good--up there with Agent and Inquisitor.

In summary, while the obvious thing to do is to play a Jedi, I'd suggest picking pretty much any other class to get a real feel for the game, especially Imperial side.  There are stories in the game that are every bit as interesting as the KOTORs, but they aren't the Jedi classes.  (On a related note, if you loved Mission Vao in KOTOR1 as much as I did, play a Sith Warrior; your first companion is very similar in looks and personality.)

I'm sorry, I'd almost forgotten about this: I haven't had time to play SWtOR for my desktop is out of commission :( I've had to use other platforms for gaming, so if and when I get around to you guys' suggestions, I'll be sure to let you know!

I haven't been on it much in the last several months either... just haven't had the time to really sit down long and run missions lately.

No worries--I've been playing enough for all three of us.   :D

neither. I haven't even had much time to play my xbox of late, let alone my computer!!

I haven't gotten very far on the Empire side, but the republic side I've gotten the furthest with my scoundrel. I thoroughly enjoy playing the smuggler, but I am noticing that I'm racing through each planet as far as main storyline missions go a lot quicker than the Knight or Consular- in some cases there's areas you completely miss doing the main storyline, so unless you purposely go off exploring the complete opposite direction you miss a pile of side missions/ opportunities for levelling up.

Yes!!! The Old Republic is definitely worth playing. The Old Republic has a great story, and lets everyone be a jedi, or sith, and while that sounds bad it isn't because it takes place in an era where that would be true. The game overall is a fun worth while adventure, and is also fully playable with friends!!!

I have greatly enjoyed SWTOR.  I have 14 characters on Jedi Covenant amd they are evenly split 7 and 7.  It is certainly more fun playing the game with at least one other person.  Preferred is DEFINITELY the way to go if you don't subscribe.  I'm a subsciber and I have earned enough cartel coins to buy pretty much all the perks you get as a subscriber.  If you are curious I'll let you know later what all those are.

I'm curious. I'm also tempted to go for Preferred, but since I can only play the game on my School's Gaming COmputers (Sooon... Sooooooooooooon) I don't play often.

Just got my one little Smuggler on... I *think* Jedi Covenant? Not 100% Certain. :|

Either way. They stole my ship. Every plot dialogue since then has had a "WHERE'S MY SHIP" option. They win. They win everything.

Playing it right now ... Leveling a Consular

One thing I find very satisfying is the balance of the game ... I like how they made it to where a trooper or smuggler has a chance against a sith warrior or assassin.  Generally in the SW universe a single trooper would be decimated by a padawan

Balance is something an MMO typically HAS to have because if it doesn't, people usually don't want to play because the PvP is lopsided.  They also don't want just a bunch of one class running around and then have almost none of other classes.  All classes and specializations have their advantages and disadvantages on both sides, allowing you to play the class you wish on either side and getting a fair gameplay experience.  It would have been a very poor MMO if they didn't have balance.

Yeah, I understand that concept.  I assumed they would try to do what WoW originally was going to do with the Death Knight class ... Like a hero class sort of thing

I started playing a year ago. My first character was a jedi knight. I love the game I say yes. Its worth playing I'd say.

I have been playing for a little over 2 years, and for me, it is the only MMO to be playing at the moment.  I was a voracious City of Heroes player, but when that went under, DC Universe and Champions Online just did not fill the void.  So, I went with Star Wars, and while I don't have as much fun as Heroes, for the time I spend on-line, it is worth the $15 a month.

If possible though, play with other folks.  It is always more fun to team up, than to solo IMHO.  I have a group of folks that I play with, and it throws a social element into the game play as well.  The help on difficult missions does not hurt either.

It's the only MMORPG I'm willing to pay money for.  I play a few others, but they're all free and I will not put money into their machines.  Granted I don't play as often as I used to, and that bothers me at times, but I've got other priorities right now such as job hunting and school...

I have been playing The Old Republic since beta. It's a typical MMPRPG, nothing too speicial but I like since it's in the SW universe. It's fun and the story lines makes it really fun. Not much after game contenet, I have a level 55 Sith and you basically repeat daily missions and try to collect gear.

Basically World of Warcraft, Star Wars style. :)

My rating is an 8/10.

I find it to be a much more immerse experience than WoW by far.

The spoken mission dialogue while obnoxious the second time around is so much cooler than WoWs text base questlines.

WoW- Questing, Raids, 5 mans, PvP arena and group, etc

SWTOR - Missions, Raids, Tacticals (5 man equivalents), pvp ... Then they have SHIP COMBAT ! With Missions, Pvp

I think it offers much more than WoW and it seems like SWTOR is much more balanced.

I would say WoW was 7/10 and SWTOR was 8.5/10

I never managed to get into MMOs, but this one sucked me right in.  Great storylines and voice acting, plus all kinds of things to do apart from your main plot (the ship missions are especially cool).  I'd still be playing it now if I didn't finish off my Guardian's story and get him to level 50... after that I admit it becomes a bit boring, especially without friends to play with.

I was the biggest fan of the KOTOR series, but I havent even played this new one yet. Now that its free to play, I need a new gaming pc.  I just have a smart phone (LG Viper), my tablet (samsung galaxytab3mini), and my ps4, why cant they do what dc universe did and release it on the psn.  I want to play this game soooo bad right now.  I miss the KOTOR scene, I successfully trained all party members in KOTOR II to jedi on the light side and to sith on the darkside.....good times.  I used to stay up all night while I was in college, playing those games.

You will enjoy it but once you reach max level you may take off your sub. There's very little end game content and once you finish the story mode there's really no reason to keep paying monthly fees. At least, in my opinion. Other people enjoy making alts and goofing around, so it's really opinion based. I've always been a raider in MMOs. So yeah. XD;

Been playing this since alpha and beta testing and still am playing it.  I really do enjoy the game.  Though that might be somewhat evident by my 14 characters, 6 of which are 50+.

I do endgame ops with my guild, so I consider there to be plenty of content.

The decreased XP for non-subscriber is annoying when leveling, but obviously not an issue on endgame content.  With my sub and the cartel coins I've gotten I have purchased a lot of the account or legacy perks that you don't get when not a subscriber so things like titles and hide helmet and artifact level gear are still open to me even if I choose to turn off my sub.

Also don't forget about a putting a security key on your account, that's 100 coins a month just for having the physical key or the app on your phone.
