I didn't have time to read the whole thread as I'm at work right now, but I'm definitely interested in this.  Personally I like the concept of Shien/Djem So, so I'll probably follow that thread as well.  But I'll definitely try to take some videos to post here, though I don't own a video camera, so it'll all be my crappy cell phone camera.

Well, I just made my first video.   It's on my channel here.

There's only 2 videos so far so it should be easy to find.  Please keep in mind I'm incredibly new to all this.  Never had any formal training, and only some informal training with a bokken one of my roommates had a few years back, plus watching a few videos here.  You might notice I don't have enough room in my apartment for this.  I'm still figuring out how to get a stand for the phone to work outside.

Your spinning is actually very good, especially for someone with little experience.  One tip I have is to keep practicing to try and develop more control, so that your motions are more consistent.  You want to move as little as possible, instead letting the blade do all the work traveling around your body.

Hey mate, just a heads up you may want to adjust the sensitivity on your soundboard, it takes a while I got mine set up so I can throw my saber into the air and catch it without a clashing sound rarely does it not clash when hit against another saber/object however.

Takes a lot of fiddling but once it's set, IT'S SET.

You should try the clockwise version of that.

dont throw your saber in the air, it leaves you open to attack and isnt worth it just to look cool

It depends on what you're going for.  If you wanna make a flashy looking choreography, it's not a problem (though I don't care for it personally).  However you're right when it comes to martial combat - it's basically a useless move.

Yes.

Sorry, no way do I use that for dueling it's just a fun badass thing for an idle stance if your waiting for others etc........... practice with a stick so you don't break your saber if you want.

Looks esspecially badass if you can flip and catch. idle stance. sik.

Any way you can elaborate on the lack of movement?  All the videos I saw recommended using the shoulders and elbow to move rather than the saber itself.  For example, to get it to spin behind my left side I have to turn at the waist/shoulders a bit or it hits my left shoulder.  How would I do that without moving?

you just dont want to over do it. You do use the shoulder and waist to push the saber through, but if your arm is relaxed and springy, you actually have to move them a very short distance. don't flair around, tighten up through the torso and relax a bit.

I would say that you stance should be more angled toward your open side. So that you lead foot and lead shoulder are the same. That should allow you the range of motion to do the move without disconnecting the arm from the body. That is the real culprit in hitting one's self.

That pretty much sums it up!

Great info. Thanks!  I've been trying some basic parry/block/attack stuff in my apartment.  One good thing about the lack of room is I have to keep everything (relatively) tight and controlled so I don't smack the cieiing/walls and piss off my neighbors.  I'll try to get video of some sort in the next couple nights.  I'm having some trouble getting my damn car to pass inspection because of stupid techs, which is really eating into my time right now.

I'd like to make a case for tossing and catching with practical application.
If you are adept at tossing and catching it's another tool available to you.
If you lose your grip or your weapon ends up leaving your hand and you've practiced recovering it in mid-air before your odds of being able to get it back under control are great than if you've never practiced.

Well I got my car to pass inspection earlier than I thought, so I had time to do a little bit of work.  Just a few minutes of freeform.  I've always been fascinated by reverse grip styles for some odd reason, so I threw in some of that for giggles.  I'm under no illusions that it's actually useful, but I find it enjoyable at least.  Also, I apologize for the red shirt.  It didn't occur to me that it would be bad against a red saber until I started editing.

Mucking about a bit last night with a double saber.

You can tell I don't play with one of these often. But they can be pretty fun.
