I just started the Adventure that this community and saber combat in general has to offer at the end of august, I recieved my first saber on the 29th.

Now, our group here in Winnipeg has been contacted to do a Demonstration of Saber Combat at our local Comic / Sci Fi convention (http://www.c4con.com)

So, I have seven weeks to put a costume together.

http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-5424-medieval-swordsman-shirt.aspx
http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-4813-medieval-hooded-cloak.aspx

I am starting with these, and a Jedi Belt I am getting from Ebay. I already own military parade boots, so I don't need to buy boots just yet, but I will in the future.

A friend of mine that is learning to make movie props and art is going to Make me a pauldron for my right Shoulder (sitting down with him this week to talk about style/look/cost) And I am thinking about just getting it done in a shiny black style, almost like black storm trooper armor.

a possible eventuality of a tabard and an Obi, although I am not sure if that will fit the armored style I am going for, I may just have my friend make me a set of thigh protectors and greaves.

aaand the big news.....

I will be making a curved hilt "rapier-saber" There is a custom metal shop close to where I work, and even if it costs me a hundred to just get the hilt bent and tapped for MHS and a hole cut for a switch, it will be worth it.

In the end, if it takes me a year of saving to order parts, then so be it. the design Idea I have is very simple, but in the end I believe will look elegant and awesome.

The swordsman shirt, to me, doesn't really say star wars... It's a great shirt and would certainly look great with a renaissance or medieval costume. I found a kimono that looks pretty cool and with an "under tunic" (gray or black or deep red (or whatever color ties in with your outfit) shirt) it would look pretty cool, just add the tabbards and obi and it would be and awesome dark jedi/sith costume.

With the boots an easy way to make them look more like you want is by making spats/gaiters with some leather or other material depending on what look you want. It makes the boots look more legit without buying new boots.

It really depends on what you're going on.  From the sound of it Thonolan is looking to maintain his own style, especially when you consider the rapier style lightsaber he's gonna build (which I'll call a lightfoil for simplicity, and yes such a thing exists).  For a more traditional Sith setup you could either order garments or just go with a black karate gi and pants, maybe adding your own tabards and obi (not too hard to make).  Black robe on top and you're set.

I like this idea though!  Now that you're working on your Makashi it'll all come together quite nicely I think.

My plan was to somewhat emulate Spanish swordsman as an homage to the style, while at the same time being somewhat more modern and SW-esque.

I also believe that the Idea that Jedi and Sith dress the same is something that really just would not happen in a real world scenario. Given that the Sith were all about getting the job done, and moving to the next task, I believe that they would dress to what is required for the mission.

Pre Episode 3 Jedi, however, I would agree. They had very little flexibility in clothing and were essentially given a dress code as it were.

Thank you for your Thoughts Akos. If, in the end you are right and it doesn't look good, I'll eat crow.

Don't get me wrong, I love creative and new ideas. In fact, I took some criticism for my costume at first when I was showing my ideas. they were unfinished and I had even said as much and people got on my case a bit for not being Star Warsy enough. I was trying out a different sort of look with a gas mask, but I ended up scrapping it since I couldn't modify the look the way I wanted. So, I went a bit more classic with my look: http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=7679.msg119062#msg119062

I have always liked the updated and more flexible looks for jedi, giving some classic cues with a salute back to older times, such as with Luke's ROTJ look: new but with classic styling. And I agree that sith should not be bound to one set of rules regarding wardrobe. I do maintain that certain cues can help make it look more like star wars when included and encourage people to try to use them. I see from the movies a sort of blend of ancient and future styles. We have tunics and robes but also technological augmentations like Lando's assistant with the bionic headband, others with leather pouches on their belts but some with compartmentalized belts that look more futuristic. I like the blend of styles and I think the glossy pouldron will look really great. I wonder if you could also incorporate something like a "control box" type of thing with LEDs in the pouldron. I am having ideas about that right now...

So, I found other vambraces that I liked a little more, and suit the character back story I am writing a little bit more.

http://medievalcollectibles.com/p-17448-black-ice-arm-bracers.aspx

So myself and one of my sith counterparts have ordered those.

The plans for my saber are coming along nicely, I have found someone here locally that may be able to do the work of the cutting and welding for free! Parts are being ordered next week. I may be able to have my actual saber built before our event, which would be superb!

As soon as I get the parts for my costume, I will be sure to post so people can see, as I already have the pants and boots, I will be 90% in costume save for my shoulder armor and saber color.
