Title: So the Devil jumped on hickory stump...
Post by: Master Rel on November 28, 2012, 04:14:31 AM
and said "Boy let me tell you what!"

Do we all remember the movie Crossroads, 1986, the karate kid is a classical guitar virtuoso who hits the road to learn what it takes to play the blues...he ends up making a deal with the Devil for his and another's souls, a musical duel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aw4dUbutja4#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aw4dUbutja4#ws)

So here is the game...keep in mind this is strictly an opinion based game so no hard feelings if someone does not prefer your style of music or your favorite person...it is just a game.

                                           Game Rules
Cutting Heads

1. one poster puts a pic and video link of a musical talent...it does not need to be guitar...could be horns, drums, violin, vocals, etc...then the next poster puts up a challenge pic and video link.

(challenges should be from a related source...guitar vs a guitar rather than guitar vs kettle drum...the exact type of source need not be the same, a bass guitar vs lead guitar would be fine...at least somewhat related)

* Also lets try for some variety. If the last match up was between a guitar vs guitar lets try for vocals vs vocal or something else rather than another guitar match up. Posters won't be punished or criticized for posting a match up similar to the previous one, but things could start to get old if a trend of a certain style starts to occur.

2. video link should be 5mins or less...if longer then only the first 5mins should count.

3. When posting your video be sure to state which is the main focus of the video. For example if you post a video with more than one person in it, state what you want the viewer to judge the video by. Like vocals, guitar, drums or the bands performance as a whole.  That way the next video poster will be able to find an appropriate video to combat yours.

4. broken links are a loss by default.

5. after the two are posted then we vote...first one to get 5 votes wins...the other is cut...never to play again...thrown into the pit of dispair!

(the two posters do not vote on their challenge!)

6. winners may be brought up as often as it can be done, losers posted later down the line are default losers automatically...so if they lose do not use them again.

*The cases of videos with lots of backup instruments should be rationalized by the voters...give credit to the main artist/musician and not all the backup and supporting efforts.*

Just to review, using the above video...

Poster A...Jack Butler
Poster B...Lightning Boy

By the votes Lightning Boy wins 5:4, close match

Jack Butler loses and he is cast down down down
Lightning Boy survives to fight another day if desired

That is it  :)

                                                          Rule additions
PS
The real person behind Jack Butler (Steve V) is still available because it was just an example. Characters used as with Lightning Boy are fine, but keep in mind that real people played the music (Ry Cooder), best to respect the artist and show their picture with the actor/character in the video.

PSS
Post a cruddy video link or your guy's not best performance, don't cry...just because they may be the best if you post a yuck video he or she may lose anyway  :(

PSSS
If a challenge goes on for 3 days after the day it was posted without a result then it will be called a draw, and restarted with another pair!

Let us begin!

I LOVE YOU ANDY JAMES!!! (electric guitar virtuoso) I'm sure that'll be fine since they are both string instruments.

Loss  2 to 5

And we are off...acoustic ukulele vs electric guitar.

Let the voting begin!

I vote... ukulele dude. That was insane. Not that Andy James is a slacker or anything, it was a tough call - but this Jake Shimabukuro fellow is an incredible artist.

I vote andy james. now I don't even really know who andy james is other than from the video posted, but I felt more atune with the guitar than the ukulele. Perhaps if it was a different song by jake i would have voted differently. Oh well, still a tough call.:P

He is a world-renowned guitar teacher for this guitar/bass tuition company called Licklibrary and he is also the guitarist for the metal band, Sacred Mother Tongue. I own quite a few of his DVD's that he did for Licklibrary ;D They've helped me improve so much.

Anyway, thanks for your votes :) See, Rel?! I totally did not bring an assault rifle to a knife fight  ;)

Lol  Jake Shimabukuro the ukulele guy is one of the top two or three in the world with the ukulele...I know I know...it seems like a nothing instrument but he has a huge following and tours the world constantly to sold out shows...small intimate venues but he has guests star musicians that show up all the time and he pops up on stages during concerts.

Heavy metal vs jazz...acoustic vs amped electric...it is an interesting challenge of extremes to be sure.

Keep voting guys and gals!

1 : 1

I vote ukulele. My reasons:
1) Though the assau...electric guitar was amazing, I HAVE heard some better, more technical stuff.
2) The ukulele was probably the best uke playing I've ever heard.
3) The ukulele just makes me smile when I hear it.
4) The world, and this thread needs more ukulele.

It's basically a battle between very precise finger-picking skills and very tight plectrum-picking / vibrato.

The main thing I've noticed about Jake, and the thing that really stood out to me was how controlled his thumb was when picking. It's such an awkward tool to use when finger-picking anything other than the bass strings, but he's practically mastered it. Also, very smooth transitions from strumming to free-strokes, which I really enjoyed. Also, the crescendo with the erratic strumming was brilliant.

For Andy James, the main thing that's always stood out to me was 1) His extremely tight alternate picking during the shredding. 2) His attention-to-detail as far as vibrato goes. It's something a lot of guitarists overlook, and it's actually a very important skill to master because of how much more emotion can be wringed out of each individual note, which is particularly useful in a slow song like this. Also, his use of a central grouping of notes, while adding vibrato and bends for flavor, then flawless transitions into other groupings of notes that don't sound awkward at all.

Both of them have exceptional musicality and composition skills as well.

Definitely an interesting match-up.

It just so happens I'm a Ukulele fan. Good guitarists are pretty common, good Uke players not so much, so Jake Shimabukuro gets my vote.

So, it's 3-1 for the Uke!

My vote goes to Jake Shimabukuro.

Respect goes to James of course, I can't fathom playing like that but ever since I got married I've become a huge softie and Jake's rendition of that was beautiful.

4-2 Uke

Title: Re: So the Devil jumped on hickory stump...

When one of these guys wins, either way, remember try to keep the challenges related...a vocal vs trumpet would be rejected  :)

And before it happens...only two challenger at a time...first two related ones offered will be the next challengers.

Thanks for playing along!

I think that one thing that should be mentioned in regard to what someone said about my song pick not being very technical, well, I wasn't going for technicality alone, though it was still a very technical song. Great songs don't have to be technical, just take Canon in D for example. I think this competition should be about technicality, yes, but also the overall package, including composition, creativity, feelings that are stirred in you, etc.

Just a thought :)

Nobody's done anything wrong whatsoever but I figured I should mention that.

Title: Re: So the Devil jumped on hickory stump...
Post by: Master Rel on November 30, 2012, 02:10:07 PM
Agreed, it should be an overall feeling that comes from the video link...purely technical or solo performances are not always going to be available, so if accompanied it the video then mention what aspect is to be considered.

Keep voting fellow forumites!

In the name of consistency, for the next challenge and those following should we consider a shorter window for the voting?

Once we have a handful of challenges it should flow fairly well, but based upon what I have seen thus far it seems that it may take the full 5 days to wait out the votes.

Maybe we should consider less time, like 3 days?

Doesn't really matter, but it would be nice to have a couple a week rather than one per week.

I would agree to this too. A three day voting window from the day the two videos are matched up would be best. Also lets try to have some variety in the match ups. Since we just had a string instrument match up, an unrelated match up between vocals, horns instrument etc... should be posted. Posters won't be criticized or punished for posting a similar match up to the previous one, but things will start to get old if  a bunch match ups of one guitarist vs another guitarist are posted over and over again. Even if they are different artists.

So first to five or the one with the most votes after three days wins? Sounds good to me.

Are you saying you would like to see a mix match challenge?

Like an opera singer vs a trumpet player?

Or just not guitar vs guitar vs guitar vs guitar etc.?

I find myself without a vote...at the risk of having rocks thrown at me...both of those were noise to my ears.

(ducks behind bed)

I will wait a few minutes and listen to both again...they are both insanely technical and skilled...but straight drums is not my cuppa at all.

But I will listen again, and vote...let my ears recover a bit  :)

Hahaha, no worries at all. Matt was doing all improvisations, but I chose that video simply because I think it demonstrated a lot of what he is about. I also picked it because I didn't want to spend too much time finding a good video.

I am at a complete loss.

Not wanting to hurt feelings...so forgive me ahead of time.

The first guy is just repetition and somewhat grating and annoying...sorry TJ I am sure with the rest of the band he sounds amazing!

The second guy...whew...improv drums...it is like the worst nightmare of any parent...a crazed arse kid wailing on a drum set in the garage...again I am sure he is just great with a band.

I need to vote so the least offensive to my uncultured untrained ears would be Matt...even though his last name sounds like a STD   :-\

Sigh...sorry to be a downer...I suck...oh well...

Title: Re: So the Devil jumped on hickory stump... Round 3 on pg4
Post by: TheHobbitofDune on December 03, 2012, 05:05:27 AM
LOL... Thanks.

Also, I think he did very well as far as improvs go. He is actually a drum teacher, has been playing drums most of his life, and is hailed as being one of the greatest modern drummers alive by tons of fellow musicians. I wouldn't know if he was though since I'm not a drummer, but greats like Mike Mangini can't be wrong :D

Don't feel too bad about it though. I would be in a tight bind as well if someone brought up wind instruments... I don't know anything about those beasts. Those are definitely not my cup of tea. Except for flutes... and ocarinas.....

I know MUCH better drummers than the guy I posted(Neil is great, don't get me wrong, but he can  be repetitive at times and he's pretty simple. He's basically just a really good rock drummer.), but I couldn't find any solos of theirs on YT. It was basically a necessity that I post him, cause I REALLY wanted to post a drummer.

My drummer (that I was parallel posting) is a different creature all together...he will wait for another day...though he is recognized as top 3 easy...seriously his efforts smoke both those guys lol...

I will hold him in reserve  :)

That's debatable ;) I know who he is and I know what he is capable of, and while I do think Matt isn't #1, I still place them both in the top 3 ;)

Lol you can debate all you want my friend...check the established sources and Neil Peart is the number one living guy on nearly every poll   ;D

But he is not a challenger right now...so back to the two at hand.

Yeah, I know, but look at all of the support for Matt. Plus Neil is one of the most well known and well established drummers around and Matt is an up-and-coming star.

But anyway...

KEEP VOTING!

The rules don't say that it has to be one person. Just a musical talent, so duets or a band would be allowed. Now you just need to find another duet or band to match the challengers video.

My vote goes to Shinedown.

While a prettier melody, I was not a fan of the vocal delivery from Sonic Syndicate. If your going to sing next to an acoustic guitar you really should enunciate, it felt like his words were being strung together with moans.

Sorry to sound pedantic if I do.

Post by: Master Rel on December 05, 2012, 07:28:57 PM
Well well...I am not against groups but it does defeat the idea of an easy to decipher performance...

but on page one of the game rules...

"*The cases of videos with lots of backup instruments should be rationalized by the voters...give credit to the main artist/musician and not all the backup and supporting efforts.*"

So in the future if more than one performer is presented, then note which part of the whole is to be considered  :)

That's Roland's signature. Plus, he is Swedish, so English is not his first language. Also, this was shot in the morning when everyone was barely awake, haha. Still, I love them, and I wouldn't have chosen anyone else even if it meant losing because of it :)

Title: Re: So the Devil jumped on hickory stump... Round 3 on pg4
Post by: Master Rel on December 05, 2012, 07:36:20 PM
Well the rules skirting aside  :)  I liked both nearly equally for nearly the same reasons but Shinedown did more with less.

So in this case considering the acoustic small venue duel I will vote for Shinedown.

If it was an vocal duel I would still go with Shinedown.

And there you go  :)

May the voting be fast and furious!

Oh well. Also, the vocals were toned down since it was an acoustic performance. He has a very powerful voice. I also didn't really notice any moaning going on....

But in any case, keep voting :)

Also, I agree with Rel. Band performances aren't really the best idea, haha.

I totally forgot to mention this, but since Brent was the main focus, I think I should have picked a video that showcased Roland's vocals a bit better. I was just going for an acoustic performance. Oh well. Maybe next time when we have another vocalist duel :) Which I don't think will be for a while since we just did two vocalist duels almost in a row.

Actually, if it's okay, I do want to change the video. Sorry, I'll stay out of the next few rounds. Was planning on doing that anyway. But, um, here...

(Song starts at 0:47, ignore the stupid intro)

I don't mind if I lose, but I just wanted to make things a bit more... fair, I guess.

Shinedown is most likely going to win anyway.

Title: Re: So the Devil jumped on hickory stump... Round 4 on pg5
Post by: Master Rel on December 07, 2012, 03:32:57 AM
Ok the only right thing to do at this point is to declare Shinedown the winner...by more votes and default.

It is just a silly game but the rules were clear, submit a video/pic with notes of who we were to focus on...not sure why a second entry was considered ok?

But this is not the average forum...our forum is full of buddies.

So we move on.

But let us review...

the idea of the challenge is one person's performance against another person's performance...instrument vs related instrument...voice vs voice...if there is a duet then note which aspect we are to focus on...bands and such are right out.

That said...I was thinking that an exception would be a chorus or other vocal group that combined voices to create a single application.

A chorus is not a couple people singing together but rather a well oiled machine of complimenting vocal efforts.

So single purpose efforts, no standard bands (singer, guitar, bass, drum, etc.), and once committed to a video it is what it is (if the video link is broken or you do not like it or you wanted another...repost another PRIOR to one single vote being cast).

Moving on guys...with our silly little game :)

No hard feelings, no need to pass on playing, let us just keep it going guys  :D

*****

I will start the next round...so here we go!

The next challenge is violin, I have chosen Lindsey Stirling, in this video it is a finished production piece with some dub drops and electronic rhythm...I ask that only her violin performance and musical artistry be considered...and yes there are some truly amazing violin players out there...I am challenging you to find one, get a decent video, and post it.

Charlie Daniels. If y'all aren't comfortable with fiddle vs. violin, no worries at all, and no hard feelings. Since they're essentially the same instrument played in vastly different ways, I thought it'd be appropriate.

Flute would not have been my first choice, but I applaud the consideration of some other aspect then electric guitar and wailing vocals...there are so many options of music and instruments out there...any challenge should be measured on skill with the same, artistic process, and technical application.

Be it symph metal vocals or classical harp.

A lackluster tie.

Let us see if we can shake this up a bit?

Next two challengers.

I offer female metal singer!

I went with a synth metal singer...it was a challenge to find a vocal focused video, otherwise you must contend with the band influencing your choice, hard not to either way...so I chose to go with an acoustic song...so this one is not all rocking out but they can and do on regular basis so there should be no issue  :)

It is a song that highlights her voice rather than the band being a big part of the consideration, so no hate metal heads...rock on rockers!

Symph metal rocks, and if you haven't noticed, I'm a huge Epica fan... regardless of who the other competitor is, I'm voting for Simone.

Whew...if I had not been the one suggesting the singer I would be voting for Simone.

I appreciate the comparable acoustic version TJ offered...but that is not my cup of tea...not sure it was tea...maybe some pagan brew of elderberries and willow bark...really creepy vibe that group was putting out lol

I had never heard either of them before, so I'm coming into this challenge with completely virgin ears. I'm definitely voting Simone! I couldn't make it all the way through the other one. Not ragging on anyone's personal choices, but that was certainly not my taste.

The only person who would've made the vote difficult for me would be Tarja... I fully expected her to be the other challenger.

Simone - 3

Maria - 0

Yeah, I actually didn't expect Maria to win, I just threw her in anyway.

It was appreciated!

A great choice and an honorable attempt to match the unplugged aspect  :)

Apparently freestyle rap, by a credited artist, is hard to come by....

I haven't watched the video yet, but I see a guy in the background with a shirt that says "cosmic swagger"...

Large amounts of "swag" = very small... uh... brain! Yeah! That's what I was going to say! ;)

Yeah... I probably should have gone with something easier ;D

Have you watched it yet? He is pretty amazing. He basically lets the audience hand him random stuff and he makes up raps about them. It's pretty awesome.

I did watch it.

I do not think easier is in question...rap just does not equate in my brain for musicality.

I did not find him awesome in the slightest, but that is not the point of the challenge...so on to a challenger for this venture...

(it is rap and thus there may be a few words of ill repute slung in there, it is what is, represent...word)

Eminem Freestyling (2mins in it gets funny)

It looks like no votes so a null challenge.

Moving on.

Next two challengers!

How about something unique?

An unusually instrument...not a triple neck electric guitar, but rather an unorthodox instrument.

I will offer the Hang Drum or more appropriately the Hang

Manu Delago playing the Hang

No votes.

Lame.

Next two challengers up!

Maybe we need to mix this up a bit...let us try a band challenge just to see if anyone is watching this thread...maybe it has run it's course or it is the holidays?

Anyway...let us consider bands.

No hard feelings, do not get butthurt if your band does not win, this is a popular vote contest.

As we were not going to include bands let us add this bit...the challenger decides what the band is or is not...no fights over if a particular band is black synth death metal and not synth heavy doom metal...this is not the place.

If someone offers a band then you offer a comparable style...it does not need be exact, just in the same wheel house as it were.

Shall we try it out?

Remember, just two challengers at a time, only the first 5 minutes of video will be considered, first to 5 votes or advantage after 3 days wins.

Here we go...

Challenge of the bands...

Iconic metal band...

Metallica (S&M) Battery

Disturbed, just based off that song offering alone(is it sad that I don't even need to watch it, I know which song it is just by the screencap?). That is easily one of my favorite guitar solos ever.
