Title: Light Painting
Post by: Tai Chi Chuan Wijchen on November 07, 2019, 01:50:08 PM
I don't know if anybody is interested, but if so, then we could make this a new thread for posting your light painting pictures.

I couldn't find a similar thread, but if I missed it, please let me know.

Very nice!  What were your camera settings?

Title: Re: Light Painting
Post by: Tai Chi Chuan Wijchen on November 07, 2019, 03:36:03 PM
Samsung S8
Camera set to PRO and then played with shuttertime. I think these were set at 2 seconds.

But I think I'll play with it in the future, so if better settings come up, I'll share them.

Some of these shots you guys got look awesome!

So these aren't with my saber, they're from a fire show I did last year, but it's the same idea.

Nice Solstice, my mind automaticly reads that several things around your house got thrown around thanks to this picture.

Some old ones i dug up from my Flicker and FB accounts:

I like the 'rainbow'-figure 8's Cern. My guess, LED poi with rotating colors? I had those a long time ago, gave them away and now start missing them.

Beautiful pictures Sam.
I like firespinning, something I definately want to try in the future. But I first need some more confidence in spinning with a contactstaff.
Is that a fire-sword that your wielding? Or only fire-poi?

Of course points to all.

That's my contact staff.  I do swords and a Darth maul style staff.

It's a staff?!
That firespinning is getting more and more tempting.

Here's a few more pics. The orange is fire spinning; the others are flashlights w/ Lee filters, glow sticks and a saber. If anyone is interested in techniques, feel free to message me.

Hey Tai,
You can start off with an old wire whisk tied to a piece of rope. Stuff the whisk with steel wool and you're ready to go.
(Disclaimer---neither I nor US are implying that my above suggestion is safe in any way!)

Thanks for the tip, although I think I might ask a friend. Her boyfriend has a contactstaff suited for firespinning, and he has a lot of experience in (fire)juggling, so I think I'll go that way.  ;)

How dit you make those writings in the air? I know the bit about a flashlight and writing, but what camera and settings did you use?

Have what you want to draw/write already planned out. (I proposed to my wife this way) Make sure to go slow and not rush it or the clarity won't be there. Any camera that will do long exposure (preferably set up on a tripod to reduce shake) will work but I use a wide angle lens on my Nikon 750 and to give me more "canvas time", I prefer around 35 to 45 seconds.  I think the "All you need is love" image was done at about 20 secs so it wasn't as clear as I like. The increased exposure time can bog down the rendering in older devices and take forever but imo it's worth it.

Hope this helps and please post some pics when you get with your friend? I'm quite interested!

Thanks, I will try those settings in the near future. Have some ideas allready.
For the firespinning, I think that's something that'll have to wait untill this summer. But Ill definately share some pictures.

I finally figured out how to do this. It turns out my phone didn't have a aperture option to change shutter speed, but my old reliable digital camera did:

And my personal favorite:

Nice job! Now, if you make certain to move your body the entire time, you shouldn't be able to see yourself in the pictures.

Why you want to use MG blades? Mine are all HG and I think they look great on a picture.

Hahaha, lol that hand that's not really showing on the left! Point for creativity.

Could you dim the light (not entirely dark)? That might help pop the light in the picture.

My pictures from yesterday were in the dark outside, but still with a gardenlight glowing.
And the earlier pictures were taken inside with the lights in the next room (door open) still on.

You should be able to set your camera to either BULB mode (learn more about this mode in Panning Mode and BULB Shooting), or Manual mode with shutter speed between 11 to 30 seconds, aperture of f/8 or higher, and ISO between 200 to 1250, all according to your environment and how dark it is

Some new phones have camera settings or you can download a free app that will do that.
