I never understood the obsession with berries. They take too long to pick, most are messy, they don't taste good, and you have to eat a ton of them to stave off hunger.

Elderberries are easy to harvest if you're after the juice (which is what we wanted, since we were making jelly).  All you need is a colander, a matching pestle, and some cheesecloth... and lots and lots of elderberries.  As a basic food source, yeah, berries in general are more labor-intensive than larger fruits.

Smelling of elderberries ==> reeking of elderberry wine ==> drunkard makes sense, but how does the path go from hamster to whore?  Is this some association I’m missing because I’m a Yank?

Some of us are still acquiring the necessary background material to fully appreciate the depths of humor involved.  Sure, Monty Python was funny when I first saw the movies 30-40 years ago, but I bet if I were to re-watch them now, I'd get more of the jokes.
