Not if you don't want a TON of trouble with your supervisor when you get back.  Same applies in many companies to company-sponsored events held during business hours.

i've worked in companies where the manager actually takes the team to the pub at lunchtime., especially on a friday. certain industries have a big drinking culture associated with them over here. work hard, play hard. helps foster a great team dynamic

i've always been curious about something: if the legal drinking age in the states is 21, how is that university students manage to drink so much?

Not if you hope to still be employed....or at least avoid mandatory entry in an AA type program in order to keep your job.

Though it might be okay depending on the company. Particularly smaller companies where everyone is tight with the owner/manager, and everyone goes to the bar at lunch, but it's not common.

What are RA's?

I'm so glad the drinking age in the UK is 18. although I started drinking and learning to respect alcohol through my parents. there was always a glass of wine with sunday dinner (roast lamb, chicken, duck or beef). When i was about 8 I was allowed half a glass of white wine topped up with water. (and yes, i know white wine doesn't go with red meat, but we're not snobby! lol).

as i got older i was allowed more wine with less water until i reached the age of 14 and was allowed a full glass. By the time I was 16, I was sneaking about drinking lots of cider (i think i told the now infamous cider story on the alcohol thread).

At 18, I went  to university and was on the rugby team. rugby players drink HARD. lots of drinking games, drinking fines for stuff from the match and all round massive consumption. and most bars and clubs in the uk do student discounts and special promotions on drinks for students (2 for 1 on shots of tequila for £1 was a particularly memorable one).

Having lunchtime drinks with your manager and the rest of the team was fun and a great way of bonding, as well as welcoming newbies to the team. but you had to work hard too.

this was at Haymarket Publishing, the 3rd biggest publishing company in the UK (at the time when I worked there).

oh. at my university we were called floor counsellors. (helped 1st years settle in and socialise. show them around. be a point of contact if they had questions or issues.)

Can you make something really strong, but make it taste good, but really cheap?

Lots of cheap alcohol tastes terrible. You want it to knock you out before you realize you're actually drinking? Be prepared to pay for it! And you better tip me before you hit the floor, too, because I will let your friends cover you with napkins to keep you warm!

Oh, bartenders and DJ's have a LOT in common. i always stay behind once the bar is shut to vent with the bar staff about problem punters and d*ckheads who we have had the misfortune of dealing with during the night.

One of the most annoying things I've had is "can you play something good?" (even though there is a packed dancefloor) or "if you play this (whatever song they request), everyone will dance" (again, even though the dancefloor is full).
