Title: Display Ideas and Tutorials - combined thread updated
Post by: Dauntless Seven on February 04, 2018, 12:46:56 AM
Because the previous topic contains very few photos thanks to PhotoBucket this is the latest version.  I have attempted to include all the original post responses with accompanying photos.  The first one will be kept in it's entirety for viewing as there is some good written advice and sharing.  It will be locked so please share here.  Unfortunately at this time we cannot just remove that kitten and the other large PB reminder.

EDIT:  I am unable to complete this without splitting the original thread.  Please enter your latest saber and other related displays here.  You can view the original topic post in it's entirety but be prepared to see a lot of PB kittens and that huge notice.  Sorry but we can't just delete that part.  :-\

http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=7551.msg103178#msg103178

UPDATE:  All 20 pages of the original " Display Ideas and Tutorials " have the PhotoBucket pics removed.  Will remain locked but please visit and enjoy.  Still plenty of good photos and instruction within that thread.  :)

Ok, I'll add what I made for my display.
First pic is what the wall looked like before.

Made out of 1x4 oak ripped to 3", due to where I wanted to place it I stepped it out so it would go over the edge of the movie poster.

And because I didn't want to look at any wires, I took 3/8" oak dowels and cut a groove in the back, and attached them to the sides.
You can see my saber holder which I can add the link if that's ok to where I bought it, I believe it was another link the I'd found it on anyway.

Here's what it looks like on the wall.

And here's what it looks like all lit up.
I also drilled a hole in the base, one to hold the saber and another straight through to allow the sound.

And haers a quick one of my blade holder.

Hope you like.

Croft... Oh my your saber display stand and that blade protection storage stand are so beautiful !!  What a great idea to use that tubing to keep your blades from getting unnecessarily scuffed up.  Thanks for the share and please add more as you create them.  :)

awesomeness point  8) 8)

Thank you Dauntless Seven, been meaning to post these pic's.

The blade holder using the foam insulation tubing was an idea that came to on how was I going to hold/display them
For anyone interested, I drilled through the oak with a hole saw 2-1/2" in diameter. The trick was clamping them together so aligned with each other.
Separate by 14-1/2"
Was fun.

Thanks again, Croft  ;D

wait till you see my blade holder for convention's

I checked, this site is listed in the cosplay section.
Only thing I had to do was some grinding on the reverse side so the corvec wheel would fit.
I used this on my drop leg holser to.

This is one of my favorites that I'm hoping to make myself soon. Super simple and can't beat the cost, you can get a set of 4 Scrabble racks on Ebay for about $5 which of course makes two saber stands.

Title: Self-made lightsaber stand
Post by: ProDadoune on February 18, 2018, 10:57:10 AM
Good morning fellow force users! So after having my first few saber I needed a stand to display them properly. I searched on internet and found this one:

but it retails for over $300! So I decided to try and do a "copy" of my own. Here's the result:

I'm pretty happy with the result. I might just run out of space really quickly... But for now it's ok. I made it out of wood as I have neither the material nor the skills to work with metal, but I found a glancy-grey paint, which makes the trick.

I intend to build a second one to hold my sabers with blades, so I can have a few ready to fight without having to screw/unscrew the blade every time. I have a good idea of how I will do it, just need the time 😉

May the force be with you all, enjoy your Sunday.

So I picked up a few Scrabble tile holders to try out this super basic way of displaying it and this was the result:

I painted it metallic gold. Doesn't look quite like much I admit, but it has a strange simplicity to it that I find very satisfying. I plan on making a small structure that looks like a small set of steps similar to what ProDadoune constructed with his fantastic saber rack but with each of these holders resting on each step for multiple sabers. On a side note, it occurred to me after examining the shape of the holders that they look very much like wood trim that you can get at a home improvement store. Bought by the foot it would definitely be cheaper than buying Scrabble tile holders at a buck a piece.

Saso... keep the good ideas coming.  I watched that YT video as well and in a pinch this is an easy way to make a stable display.  Where did you find the single Scrabble tile holders ?  :)

I got them right from Ebay, they tend to hover around $5 for four of them but with a bit of searching I got a four pack for $3.98. I'm going to look into the wood trim today at my local home improvement store and that might prove to be immensely cheaper for essentially the same effect.

Pool cue racks can also be used for a saber rack with minimal modifications if any one wants to go that route.
That is where I got my idea for the racks I built for me and my son came from.
Man, I need to get my pics on another image site so I can post them again since photo bucket went and fudged the bucket!

Try IMGUR, takes getting used to but it works for me.

Here's a tube I made for caring my blade if I go to comic con.
Made from PVC secondary handrail, sewed a felt sock, put inside to protect the blade, and on the dust cover I screwed a wing nut to grab it by.

So after my trip to find similar wood trim that would be close to the Scrabble tile holders I was able to find some, it was about $6.50 for eight feet so definitely cheaper than buying the "official" tile holders. The wood trim is slightly smaller and doesn't have a little bit of style but displays the Saber quite nicely.

Scrabble tile holders in gold and black, wood trim holder I made in the center. I super glue them together so that they don't separate.

Looks just fine with my Apprentice.

Very nice!  And at that price, if you want to cut a third piece, to put "face" side out on the front, it's still not a bad price.

Glad to see an updated (or at least De-PB'd) thread here... Since I posted these in another thread as an example of what you can do with a recharge port, guess I might as well contribute here.

Done mainly as a proof of concept and a "how much does it cost" assessment, I'm fairly happy with the results. Certain things I'll fix in the second attempt (the line... the LINE...), if and when I talk myself into doing it since I've already figured out most of what I need to do.

Anyway, the actual mount hardware is purchased off the web. Fairly expensive for what it is, materials-wise, it's also one of the cleaner and more stylistic options that I've seen, and therefore is worth the money IMO. Combined with a wood plaque I picked up from an art supply store, some stain and wood conditioner, along with a technique for transferring artwork to wood, and this is the result. Hung like a standard picture frame with a hanger nailed directly to the back, which is hooked over a nail in a stud, it's stable and I've had no problems with it falling off the wall whatsoever. However YMMV as I don't happen to have kids.

The major issues with the execution were as follows:
1. Did not sand the artwork application surface enough. It's what caused the distressing effect on the artwork. While it looks pretty good at first glance, the distressing was not intended, and I think it kinda detracts from the whole the longer you look at it.
2. The line. Caused by the technique for transferring the Starbird symbol to the wood, the line shows where the technique was and was not applied. Fix for this is to apply the technique to the entire front surface, regardless of where the artwork ends. Perhaps the fix could be said to be more art :).
3. The charger port hole. I want to figure out a way of getting a cleaner looking hole. I thought maybe a counter-sink bit or similar, to make the hole less noticeable, but I don't have one, and I had exhausted my tool budget as it was. The original idea was to keep the cable as low key as possible, hiding it directly behind the saber. Perhaps some kind of shroud around the plug, or an angled hole or something...
4. The charging cable below the plaque. I've got a piece of white wall-wiring conduit that I can cut and place to get rid of the "black cord on white wall" bit... but tool budget again, as well as "I'm not sure where I want this yet" as the conduit is fairly permanent. A trim saw might be in the budget this year... maybe. I might go with soldering equipment instead, as that might be more useful in the short term.

This was a pretty easy setup! All i did was order some rubberized utility clamps( think a wall clamp for a broom handle) from Ebay.  I measured out a tad over 36” from the ceiling, and just free-handed the placement beyond that! Easy-peasy, PLUS, it’s a killer nightlight, and plucking one from the wall to wield is always kinda Bad-A**🤘🏻

I just use pool cue racks, which I initially saw mentioned being dismissed in lieu of better options.  I'm an engineer, so a simple elegant solution like that is music to my ears.  Not very creative perhaps, but it's functional, inexpensive, and I think it looks pretty darn good.

I lined all the holes with felt to give the blades and hilts a bit of extra protection. It's added a lot of visual appeal to my living room wall.

I dig it, ktulu! i was really close to the cue rack idea, but then the clamps dawned on me.  I also like that i can place them blade down or up with the same amount of retention in the clamp🤙🏻

Funny you should say that Elwood, as I was really close to the clamp idea before settling on the cue racks.  :)  The tipping point for me was the sheer size of my wish list and the need for more efficient use of space.  Also, I'm cheap and lazy so the cost and effort of all those individual clamps was unappealing.  That said, I do like the up or down alignment option and I could probably use a few single saber staging locations around the house...  Point to you as well.

More like a rotating mirrored disco ball lol.  ;)

But the possibilities are endless and I'm going to have fun experimenting with a few boxes.  The saber holder pieces right now are borrowed from the US ones.  The mirrored bases likely can used for stabilizing something within the box.  :)

That MHS saber does indeed look slick!  Shock; Archon; a coupler...what pommel is that?

Disco ball huh? Full Disney light show eh?

Please steer clear of SW xmas Special territory though.  That wouldn't likely go over that well. ;) :P

Hi nlaubach1520,

If you can't find dedicated saber mounts a good alternative are Shoreline Marine Kayak Paddle Clips you can find from most outdoor pursuits/camping stores or Ebay etc. Do an Internet search for "Shoreline Marine Kayak Paddle Clips" and they should come up. They are made of rubber so won't scratch your valuable sabers and they usually fit US hilts quite nicely (they also have a little stretch to them)

Just thought I'd share a little weekend project; a saber display plaque.  Two of the sabers on it are Ultrasabers, the others are from a couple other vendors.   The rebel logos are custom 3D printed, and the plaque itself is aluminum over copper with an MDF backing.

Beautiful display Kage!  I really love what you did with that project!

Hi Kagetsume.  These are all really nice sabers and a helpful display plaque... however you are pushing the US forum rules and etiquette by openly displaying other guys sabers.  Friendly reminder to everyone.  :)  Please only show your US sabers if you want to share more pics of ignited or lit up saber blades.  Thanks.

Your topic has been merged into the saber display thread.  :)

Okay, wow.   I needed to fill the plaque out, and I only have a few Ultrasabers with the covertec mount that would fit the plaque (They are incidentally, both Diamond based sabers).  Just having two on the plaque looked crummy so I filled it with a couple other covertec fitted ones.  There was no goal to push/sell/advertise/ someone else.  I deliberately left the names of the companies involved out (as well as making sure Ultrasabers were front and center), and focused on the plaque itself and what it was made of.   By the logic given, I should have gotten yelled at too when I showed my twenty year old completely custom saber built with plumbing (thus making me an 'other guy'), yet no one called foul at me then.

This is not motivating to share any further with the community if I'm going to get slapped on the off chance part of a saber from somewhere else ends up in a picture somewhere, when the picture itself was neither focused on, nor trying to say anything about them, other than 'I was balancing space'.

D7 was in no way castigating you, rather she was giving you a gentle and friendly reminder of the forum rules.  As far as your custom saber, those are not included as an alternate vendor's as it is 1) a fan-made fabrication and 2) you are not posting pictures with the intent of selling.

And while context can be difficult to infer with in an online forum, D7 very deliberately included the emojis to (hopefully) take out any sting that words alone may convey.  Sorry that the impression you felt was negative but I assure you from longtime experience that D7 is a polite, congenial, and pleasant young lady whose contributions to our forum are both appreciated and done with the best of intentions.

I hope that this helps.

Not trying to pick sides here but by the letter of the law Kagetsume did nothing wrong. The rule.

"Rule #3 - No mentions of competitors
As mentioned above, this is a forum run and owned by Ultra Sabers; it is our home.  Please respect our home by not mentioning by name other lightsaber companies out there. If you need to mention them or their products in a thread, simply write "the other guys". Everyone will know who you are referring to."

The rule simply states to do not mention other companies, and to use other guys if need be. Nothing about pictures, now I understand if it would have been a picture of just those sabers but it wasn't. And by stating 'other guys" sabers are in the picture it will keep other people from thinking maybe it is a US and asking questions about it.

Now a rule that I see broken and never corrected is the very next rule.

"Rule #4 - ALWAYS be polite, respectful and courteous
This is not a G rated site, you have to be at least 13 to join. Yes, just like the last Star Wars movie, this site is PG-13. As such, we give a little lee-way to colorful language, but I expect members to be adult enough to use colorful language where appropriate just as you would in real life situations.  Post the same way you would talk to a room full of strangers in real life.  If you swear like a sailor to strangers, then don't even bother posting here, you will not be welcome.
Some words are filtered out automatically on the forum for a reason, so trying to get around the filter is essentially trying to bypass the rules of the forum - don't do it."

Which mentions trying to get around a word filter is clearly breaking the rules. I see this often and I have even done it a few times. But it is never corrected.

But I get were D7 is coming from and were Kagetsume is coming from.

Thanks Dutch.  :D

tx_tuff... I was writing a response while you were posting.  I am puzzled regarding why you are getting involved with a Moderator's decision as we are much more aware than the general membership regarding the wishes of the US owners for this Forum and the intentions of the Rules that they created.  Everyone please keep the primary focus upon saber display ideas and sharing your creations within this thread.  Thanks and PM me if you would like to discuss further.  :)

Kagetsume... Let's not make this personal and I do understand where you are coming from and your honorable intention.  That being said, I am a Moderator on the Ultrasabers Forum and therefore have expected obligations and standards to uphold.  Many members have sabers from other sabersmiths but they are at best observed within the background of a pic and the entire saber(s) are not positioned centre stage.  This is as per the Rules which we have all read and acknowledged.  We essentially are guests on this privately paid for US Forum and that is their directives.

Your photo could have been deleted by anyone on the Moderator team and even by the owners of US... but still stands for all to enjoy.  There are other saber forums that you can also join that allow the public sharing of all your sabers.  Send me a PM if you want to know how to connect to some of them.  :)

So, I needed an inexpensive, but not terrible looking display for my sabers. My house is very, very small, and it had to fit in a nook near my existing sword rack. I saw some super cheap small shelves on amazon, so I grabbed ‘em!

Three different sizes, and I picked the large and the small for the space allotted and hung them.

I figured this setup looked a bit cooler than just a flat surface, and the shotos could go on the upper deck. About two weeks later, after viewing some similar suggestions a couple forumites made, I found some individual broom and mop holders on Amazon. They were also super cheap and looked cool, so snag! We moved shops at work and there was an old coat hook laying around which was pine, and seemed like the proper substrate to support the mop holders. After pulling all the hooks, and cutting it to the proper length, I sprayed it with some .97 cent gloss black.

Many measurements and calculations were made before I layed out the final spacing for the blade holders.

You can see my layout lines for the mounts. It ended up not being an exact sequence due to the upturned edges of the shelves. I mounted the blade support where I though the middle of the blades would land so the various length blades would all fit. I’m thinking of adding some real short blades to the lineup at some point and I want them to fit if I use this display. Seems like it came out ok.

Graestar- actually your setup was one of the ones I stole my idea from!! I just don’t have that kind of space at my house, or there’d be sabers everywhere!!(which may end up happening anyway!)

Title: Wall Mounts
Post by: Naris Suril on November 08, 2018, 07:22:09 PM
First off, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I can't help but wonder something and don't know where else to put this.

I've noticed that a lot of people have wall-mounted sabers. As I have far more wall-space than table space, I was wondering how to best go about setting up a wall mount for my subsequent "arsenal sabers" (the Aeon v4 is my main saber--all the others are going to be "arsenal")?

Like, I know that with guitars you never want to support it near the spot joining the neck and head-stock without having support under the body (at the "butt").

Does anyone have any suggestions for saber hanging?

Title: Re: Wall Mounts

Hi Naris,

Before Rapine deletes this thread may I suggest you take a look at "Shoreline Marine Kayak Paddle Clips". They are used to clip paddles to canoes and kayaks and are available from Amazon and most outdoor pursuits/watersports suppliers. They are made of rubber and can stretch to accommodate a range of hilt diameters. Plus with them being rubber they won't scratch your treasured hilts.

Another possible option are 3M Command Strip Broom Hanger grips. These are the hangers that have the special "stretch adhesive strips" to attach it to the wall and a clip to hold broom handles.

Finally there are specialist made wall mounts or 3d printed mounting brackets available from online webstores.

I recently started collecting sabers and found a few of the 2-piece 3D Wall Mounts online. The bottom where the hilt sits is large enough on the ones I've ordered (a little too large IMO), and the snap/slide clip at the top fits perfect.

They are pretty easy to put into the wall, they come with anchors that you can use so that the screws for the mount pieces so that they stay safely in the wall... I used my impact gun (electric screw driver) for one, then realized you can honestly just screw them in with a regular screw driver, some patience, and accuracy.

I've started to mount them around my room in different places, currently I have 2 mounted.. I plan on mounting my other 2 on another wall in this room. Honestly, they are a little expensive if you ask me.. but depends where you find them I suppose.

Here's a picture of the 1st two I mounted, I got tired of flicking the light switch early in the morning as the ceiling fan's light is bright and hurts my eyes when I wake up... so sometimes I just pop on my Apprentice in Consular Green (right) as it has no sound, my Dominix is Lite Sound but still too loud as it would wake the house up hehe.

My best display on a budget idea was really simple to do. I’m not sure if this one has been posted yet but I have been using 3m command strip broom holders that just stick on the wall. I figured since a blade is about the same diameter as a broom handle it would work and I’m really happy with it so far.

At some point they may need a little custom paint to may them look like they came from a galaxy far far away.

Thanks Infinit01, I believe the limit for these are 5 lbs each. I was a little worried when I first started using them so I would hang the saber and come back and check it every fifteen minutes or so for the first few hours. I have never had a saber fall though and it grips the blade tightly so I’m very pleased with them.

My saber stand has finally arrived, and I am so thrilled!
It is a 4 tier acrylic stand from Ebay that had the option to customize the image and text on the bottom of the stand. We just put up the shelves, right next to the 5 panel Star Wars canvas. Now, all that is left is to get the LED lights that will go behind the sabers to provide a little extra light (these will have a remote control cuz I am short).

Thought I would share my display solution.  This is part of the Elfa Utility product line that is sold at the Container Store.  I think I bought 24" sections of the track railing and then you can snap in different attachments like the hooks or small tool holders.  I got the platinum color and looks good next to the hilts.   Very expandable too.  (It's basically the same concept as the 3M broom handle solution, but a lot sturdier since you can mount it into the studs.)  I can't remember what I paid for all the pieces but I think it was less than $50.

my idea, more for when you travel, for the motel/hotel room use two scrabble tile holder , flip them upside down so a V forms perfect to hold your sabers hilt while displaying it and the tile holder don't take any space in your luggage  I have kids and grandkids so having two or three scrabble games in the house is
 easy

So I have an idea...

I have a Dark Apprentice LE V5 saber, though my idea isn't saber specific. My saber has the belt clip option. I was thinking of maybe buying a 2nd belt clip, but removing the clip. Cutting it off and smoothing out the cut edge, of course. Then, with the now flat back, use some 3M tape on the back of it. I've used this 3M tape to hang many picture frames, without worry. They've been up for years. Does anyone know if it would be enough to hold a lightsaber though?

That's just 1 end though. I'm thinking of wall mounting my saber horizontally, under or above some pictures. The hilt end of the saber, if the above mentioned works, will be secured with the modified hilt 3M taped to the wall. For the saber end, I was wondering if other 3M products might work. They make various kinds of hooks. I've seen pictures of some holding backpacks and other items. My concern would be if the hook is large enough to allow the saber to rest in the hook. They make several kinds of hooks though and I'm unsure if any give the space dimensions for being within the hook... I hope I worded that right.

Honestly not expecting anyone to know the answer to this, but it was an idea I had while here at work, on my break.

Just to show you how they are mounted.
It was the music or my Vader impression....  ;D ;D

This is exactly what I want to do with mine! What are you using to support the blade though? I'm wanting to display mine horizontally, rather than at an angle. Currently have 1 saber, but plan to pick up a 2nd and display 1 above and 1 below some pictures I have up.

I still have a Dominix V3 to do, and three of my wife's to do.  Plus, my wife has her own displays similar to mine for her Fulcrum/Lost Grey and Graflex.  Plus, I have three more sabers one the way to do.  I'll post all of those eventually.  But, I'm starting to run out of wall space in our offices.  May need to stop buying sabers...or get a bigger house.

I just finished this one for my wife's new Spectre.  I think it is my best one yet.  Matte Spanish Moss spray paint, some vinyl cutouts...  Simple, yet effective.

I'm eagerly awaiting my order so I'm trying to absorb as much info as I can in the meanwhile.  I'll likely have 4 sabers to display soon, with two potentially lit via recharge port (more, if I'm lucky on the draws)

i noticed some of you have your sabers 'held' by the blade instead of the hilt horizontally (or at an angle) and was wondering if doing so have loosened or damaged the blade-to-emitter area from continual pressure... similar for those vertical ones where the clamps are holding the blades instead of the hilt...

Thanks in advance

It won't hurt the blade mount area in any way in the metal hilt itself. Over time it may warp or weaken the plastic blade but that is a cheap and simple fix/replacement since the blade is just a tube with film inside.

Cheers 😁😁...
I basically turned a Covertec clip into a wall bracket, then used a cut down a picture hanger for the blade.

I did the same thing with the covertec wheel and used a lower priced version of the clip (for use with cell phones) as the wall mount for the pommel end.  I want to hang two side by side and then swing the blades so they cross each other in a clash -- then maybe use some fishing line (?) to tie the blades together where they cross.

After hanging my sabers horizontally on individual hooks on my apartment wall, I found a small metal pegboard to display them at my house when I get moved in.
Gonna hot glue some foam on the pegs to cushion the sabers.

I'll get pics up once I'm done

While I appreciate the effort, seems like overkill for blade storage.  Kind of like what I had for my blades until I got more than 3... now all 50+ are piled up in the corner of my closet.  Very nice, though.

Hi MavRick, very nice stands , I especially like the inserts - are they colour coded? Lightside blue for you and Sith red for your son?

Point for the pics (in 24hrs cos I awarded you one earlier ok!)

Thank you both. And yes they are color coded. I'm really happy with how they turned out.
You can't see it in the pic but his also has brackets on each end to hold his Reapers.
As they don't set well with those claws on the bottom!!

Nice. The emitter Reaper claw should be fine, not so much the pommel claw though x.x One of my friends out in Colorado has one and I just couldn't get past the pommel Reaper claw x.x If I ever get me one I might get me a different non clawed pommel at the same time too
