Title: Unstable Blades
Post by: Samhain138 on January 16, 2017, 11:37:09 PM
I'm pretty thrilled with how my unstable blades turned out for my Kylo costume.  I used some icicle Christmas lights.  I sanded the edges, lined them with some liner from a broken blade and painted them with a red translucent paint.

The main blade I used a blade I covered in hot glue and painted with the same paint.

This was incredibly easy to do.  If I can whip these up anyone can!

Well I'm impressed! Nice work on that. It looks fantastic, and then you post the pic of yourself in the Kylo Ren costume with that saber, and it looks ridiculously authentic and real, not to mention the weathering you did adds a layer of rustic to it. I've seen the glue technique before, but I really think yours has turned out even better than I remember, probably because you painted the blade with that translucent red paint. It all works really well. Thanks for sharing - good stuff!  Have a point!

Spectacular Sam!

I really like it when someone re-purposes something broken, instead of just throwing it away. :)

That looks really good, and pretty accurate.

Very inventive and creative.

Hands down that is the best and most realistic one I've seen, especially in the pics where it's lit.

Point.

Hey Samhain - about how thick did you lay the hot glue on the blade / roughly how many sticks of the stuff did you go through?

It's like two layers.  I basically put enough down to cover the whole thing and then l did a second layer to look how I wanted.

My Kylo hilt doesn't pulse, but I might can put them in my pulsing cross guard hilt later. Idk how the socket depth will work for it though since I made them for this particular hilt.

Here's some video of it though.

That's pretty sweet. The red translucent makes it look really nice over just the standard clear.

You've done superbly well with your baby ?!... lol...   ;) :D

It may be a race to see which one is the youngest but metaphorically speaking... that was heartfelt touching.  :'( :)

points to both you and Sam  ;D

EDIT:  Actually I'm surprised by the amount of light that goes through the hot glue and the translucent paint.  8)

You made the saber but that's not gonna stop me from showing it off! I love this thing!

You still need to hook the thing into a portable amp and make folks jump at the sudden ear-piercing growl - my favorite part of the last con.

Haha!

Amazing job on the blade Sam, looks wicked!  And I frickn LOVE this saber!  Amazing job kouri- when Sam first showed me this I recognized/ remebered it right away, so that pretty much tells the whole story right there- it's a masterpiece :).

Okay I get it now.  Kouri's baby.  Thought the saber looked familiar and with great admiration I looked at the build post on another site. Am quite surprised that Kouri let it go... but then again he can always create another.  Such talented people on this Forum... we are so fortunate.  :)

Already on it (machining new crossguard exhausts). (https://www.instagram.com/p/BPai-jOAjcX/)

And on the previous point of shining through glue and paint, while Sam made his own blades, I imagine his experience is pretty similar to mine:

1) Clear glue sticks diffuse/dim a little bit, but the main blade's rocking a direct-drive Tri-Cree Red @ 2100--3000mA, so it's more than enough to make up the difference.

2) Trick is to use "Transparent" (colored, but see-through) paint. Things marked "translucent" will let some light through, but are opaque enough to block/diffuse more than you'd want.

Your unstable blades look amazing on your cross guard saber Samhain138 and I prefer those instead of regular blades. Point.

Awesome . . . points Sam & Kouri  :)

The old time Audio Engineer in me is curious . . . when you say " hook the thing into a portable amp", do you mean by cable ? . . . or some nifty wireless setup ? . . .

Installed a headphone jack next to the covertec wheel so I could plug the saber audio into the line-in port on one of the voice changer speakers. Had to put an extra volume slider on the saber audio line since it's so much louder than the mic. I had fun making people jump at the sudden *CRACKLE-GROWL*, and hadn't checked if Samhain had got the connection working on his end.

It doesn't do it justice.  You can hear this thing down the road.  No joke.  The speaker was vibrating on the deck.
