In the military, you have no choice else, face punishment.  You don't have to "like" or "agree" with that "higher-up" but, you must show respect.  You can curse them under your breath, just don't do it to their face.  Though, I was known to speak my mind to superiors on rare ocassion, with all due respect, of course. 

But this isn't the military, we are civilians. I hate people who demand respect, but don't do anything to earn it. I'll be nice(not the same as respect) when we first meet, but it's our first interactions that will determine whether or not you deserve any respect. Most people do. A lot don't.

LOL!  I GET that!  Just sharing the "alternate universe".  Yet, I would say, in many larger corporations and organizations, disrespect can garner a pink slip.

No, rant about it!  I'll join you! 

There's a BIG difference between a boss that expects you to kiss his/her arse because s/he has a title like "supervisor" and a boss who treats you well and actually deserves respect for the work that s/he does.  Some title doesn't automatically mean I "have to" respect you in order to be treated like a person.  I deserve to be treated like a person regardless of a stupid freakin' title.  That's a just a label some corporate dude gave a person.  It doesn't make someone "better" than someone else or "more deserving of respect."  Your actions garner respect, not a title.  A lot of "boss" types forget that.  "If you don't respect me, I won't respect you" does not mean "if you don't respect my authority, I won't treat you like a person."  Many bosses think this is "fair," but it's a huge steaming pile of male bovine fecal matter.

Ok, I'm starting a new Vent.......Living in Hawaii has it's downsides, believe it or not(?)  The thing that really grinds my gears is when I'm standing in a check-out line or in line at the bank, the person behind me is less than 12" away.  One time, I shifted and slightly stepped back, no more that 4-6" and....you guessed it, right into the person behind me!  It wasn't until I turned around and looked at them that they offered "excuse me".  Now, I am a VERY polite individual.  Please and thank you, excuse me, pardon me, here let me get that door for you, kinda' guy.  So, this "invading my personal space" issue happens ALL the time.  Predominantly among the Asian cultures because.....that's just how they operate. (No offense to my Asian Brothers and Sisters) So, one day, I'm at the check-out at my favorite hardware store and this guy is right on my ass.  I casually shift weight and "BUMP", right into him I nudge.  I turn around and look him in the eye, lovingly, and say, "Do you want a kiss, too?"  Well, you never saw someone move back so quick AND he runs into the guy behind him!  LOL!  My space is my space respect it (there's that word again!) or I will embarass you.

Ok, I'm starting a new Vent.......Living in Hawaii has it's downsides, believe it or not(?)  The thing that really grinds my gears is when I'm standing in a check-out line or in line at the bank, the person behind me is less than 12" away.  One time, I shifted and slightly stepped back, no more that 4-6" and....you guessed it, right into the person behind me!  It wasn't until I turned around and looked at them that they offered "excuse me".  Now, I am a VERY polite individual.  Please and thank you, excuse me, pardon me, here let me get that door for you, kinda' guy.  So, this "invading my personal space" issue happens ALL the time.  Predominantly among the Asian cultures because.....that's just how they operate. (No offense to my Asian Brothers and Sisters) So, one day, I'm at the check-out at my favorite hardware store and this guy is right on my ass.  I casually shift weight and "BUMP", right into him I nudge.  I turn around and look him in the eye, lovingly, and say, "Do you want a kiss, too?"  Well, you never saw someone move back so quick AND he runs into the guy behind him!  LOL!  My space is my space respect it (there's that word again!) or I will embarass you.  

Points. I think it has something to do with the population density over there. Take China. It has 4X the population of the US and most of it occupies an area less than half the country. I would think they're pretty used to it. And if I'm not mistaken, Tokyo makes NYC look like wide open spaces.

I'm really big on personal space myself.  I have learned some excellent "get the #@&% away from me" body language that usually keeps people at a distance for the most part, but there's still one thing that I can add to this.  I don't know how it is in other parts of the US/World, but here in the Southern US?  Jeez, everyone wants to talk to you while you're waiting in line.  They will drag you into conversations in waiting rooms, on public transit.   Look, I'm a Grade A Introvert (believe it or not) and if I don't know you?  I probably don't want to talk to you.  I'm that person who goes through self checkout to avoid having to speak to an actual person. 

It's especially annoying when they are complaining to the cashier and then start talking to ME like I'm supposed to agree.  Yeah, that's when the Dark side comes out and I say something nasty, which is usually something along the lines of, "You realize the clerk has nothing to do with the price of your (whatever), right?  Yeah, so shut up because I don't care."

I'm such a lovely person.

As another Hawaii resident, I can back up Groove's claim. I've been stationed and traveled all over the country for different lengths of time and I can attest that this is something that occurs only in Hawaii!

I'm HUGE on personal space, and I don't appreciate when people try to close the distance on me.

I usually just say something like "If you're gonna ride my ass like that, at least have the decency to pull my hair."

I don't know if this happens to other women, but I've had men "accidentally" bump into me and laugh (with obvious sarcasm) whilst saying, "Oh.  Excuse me."

Yeah, I'm seriously the wrong person to do that to and I will happily and graphically inform them of the consequences.  Loudly.
