Title: Buying My First Saber
Post by: MolecularAuto80 on February 06, 2013, 03:01:31 AM
Alright, as the name suggests I need some help with buying a new saber. I don't want to spend too much on it, and neither do my parents (I told them about it and they disagree with my money usage). I've decided that if I can convince them with options on a certain saber, they'll buy into it (As in, let me buy it. They sure aren't spending $100+ on a lightsaber). Also I want to save at least $35 so I can get into Phx Comic-con on Saturday, May 23 or some date around then. I know I can get the $35 close to not getting it at the right time (if that makes any sense at all).
So I've narrowed my options down to a few sabers:
Overlord
Aeon w/ RGB
Dominix v2 w/ RGB
Either of the Standard Issues v3

Anyone that I choose WILL NOT have sound (too much and I don't really like it all that much). They'll have pretty much standard setups. No additional options except maybe blade colors. They are listed in order of how much I want it out of the others. I'm really leaning towards the Overlord in SRD. I'd also be willing to get forum colors since they're kinda "secret" to normal US.com viewers (I only learned about how to get them today). Sorry this is so long, I just want to make sure I know what I'm doing and that I get the right saber for my first saber. Any insights/ opinions/ comments are always appreciated. Thanks.

With the exception of the SI, I own the rest of the sabers you have listed.  First, I would stay away from V2's.  You cannot upgrade them to sound later.  I would honestly prefer the Overlord.  It is a very eye catching saber.  The vented emitter looks great and the pommel is the one I wished US offered over the hole in bottom sound pommels.  It also has the Covertec Wheel installed so a clip purchased makes it a very nice saber to wear.  The emitter does not look out of place with a thumb screw making blade removal much faster.

I have mine in BR, SRD, and GB as I installed Quick Disconnects.  My friend Solinus has this exact same saber in DVA (forum color) and looks awesome.

The Overlord is a saber that can go both light and dark in my opinion.  I am including a video review that I did showing you how incredibly awesome this saber can be.  It is also a breeze to upgrade it to sound at a later date.

Hope I have been some help.

You are on a tight budget - but you have a good mix of options listed.

Stunt sabers (non-sound) are the best bargains.

The overlord is an understandable first choice.  It big and brash, and the contrast of black and silver look awesome.  I know that standard issues are on the bottom of the list, but have you looked at the dark standard issue with the vertical grooves option?  It is $60 dollars cheaper and is an attractive hilt.  My silver standard issue hilt is solid & strong enough that I could beat something to death with it (a need I hope never arises).

The RGB option adds $90 to a saber - but folks who have it love it.  The thing is (to me) most sabers look 'odd' with the extra buttons.  For RGB buttons that looks awesome on a saber - look at the Bellicose.  It's groove pattern really compliments the extra buttons, so they look like they belong on the saber. Of course, the Bellicose with RGB is well over $200 even without sound.

Take a look at the dark standard issue with vertical grooves - it is a saber that looks good on and off, and can be had for $80 (before shipping).

Thanks for the input. I'll consider them!

One more thought:  Do you plan to wear the Saber to the Phx Comic-con?  If so, the covertec knob & clip should be added into your planned expense.

The covertech would be nice, but I could probably figure something out with sewing something and/or tying something on the saber. My mom's good at that kinda thing and I've got some experience myself.

If you're getting a saber that comes with the covertec wheel, I'd say go for the covertec clip.  Looks good, and only $10.  All you have to do is slide it on your belt, and clip the saber in - instant Jedi belt!

Stick with the midgrade blades, they're definitely battle worthy.  Also, a blade plug is a good idea for when the saber's on your belt.

Have you considered a grab bag saber?

My first saber was an Overlord in violet amethyst.  It's pretty fantastic.

I similarly was not interested in sound when I ordered it, and that was a mistake.  I wound up shipping the saber back to have the sound board added.

I also have a dominix V2 in SRD that is nice, and two initiate V2s in adegan silver.  They're great, but if it's your first saber I say spend the extra money and go for the overlord - your first one should be a badass one. ;)

My only other suggestion is:  Shell out the extra $30 bucks and get the Li Ion battery setup.  Far far superior to plain old alkaline.

I am waiting for shipment now on what I expect will be my last saber for a while - I can't justify spending any more money on this hobby for now - and I went all out for my finale.  Manticore in Pyrestone Orange, quick disconnects, Li Ion with the buckpuck, sound, et cetera.  It's expensive, but it's going to be great.

TL;DR:  The difference between the aeon/dominix v2's and the Overlord are the difference between "Neat!" and "AWESOME."

I would also go with the Overlord.

I own the Aeon, the Standard Issue and The Overlord so I know what sabers you are talking about first hand. My Overlord has RGB and the clip on. I am in love with it, and if you decide to buy it you will fall in love too.
Even though I do love the Aeon. Have you considered getting the Initiate v3? Its another one I would highly recommend for a first.

Good luck! Let us know what you go with.

After re-calculating how much money I'll have by the end of the school quarter, I should have enough for the Overlord. However if I want to get a Li-Ion set up then it'll go over my budget. So I checked out some other sabers. I know I'll have enough money for any saber in the price range of Liberator v3 and below if I want to get Li-Ion and a charger or something. I've been thinking I might add sound later if I want to so that'd be helpful in the long run. I have thought about a grab bag saber. When I first stumbled upon US that was my first choice. That was before I decided what specific features I wanted and how that would affect future upgrades.
I've been mainly wanting a light side saber so if anyone has any opinions on one in a specific LED color please let me know.

Thanks

What I am reading between the lines is: you really want the Overlord.  Then that is the saber you should get.

If the Overload with the basic 'battery and resistor setup' is what will fit in your budget - that works.  Because the Overload already has the covertec clip installed, you will be able to do all other upgrades of time yourself as the rest do not require modifying the hilt.

So go with the  very basic Overload and choose a 'light-sided' color like blue or green.  Use Batteries as needed and have fun.

Later, when you have the funds and time, you can swap out the 'battery and resistor setup' for the 'Lion & Buck Puck setup'. Plan to do it yourself and treat it as a learning experience.  Eventually, you can add sound yourself (again, another learning experience). By that time, you will be able to repair any lightsaber you own.

It's the overlord with sound, that is on sale right now. But it sounds like he is saving up a bit first, so it doesn't really matter. Maybe the one without sound will go on sale before he buys one.  :)

Yea, I need to wait till next month's allowance until I have enough for the Overlord. I'm really undecided on which color to get. My fav color is blue, my sisters fav is green, but I've kinda got a thing for Fire Orange. Nothing rhymes with orange, I'm sure it's lonely. Thanks for everybody's help and opinions!

FIRE ORANGE!!  Do it!  :)

Though blue is also a great color.  Go for what color calls you.
