Title: Blue Archon battle and customization review
Post by: JdiKnhtJMH on January 06, 2011, 07:39:36 AM
The archon I bought is a nice little saber great for customization. The blue blade doesnt seem as bright as the red one I purchased, and the battery pack can be jostled in a very heated battle. Its easy to grip and use, and the blade is very sturdy as far as I've noticed. I like the archon for modding purposes, but I'm definitly eager to see how a metal hilt will feel.

Blake is using the Archon here while I'm wielding the Dark Apprentice. You can see some of the work I did on the hilt and also you'll notice that compared to my red saber the blue one doesnt seem quite as bright, I dont know why.

In this image my DA has deactivated and Blake is preparing for the killing blow. You can see the hilt here really well. I painted parts of it silver, added a guard made from the bottom of a pringles can, and then put it on one of my Force FX saber display stands. I got my hot glue gun and turned it like a lathe, running beads of hot glue around the front handgrip and then painting them silver when they'd dried for an effect similar to Luke's weapon from ROTJ. The end piece I used the same hot glue to make those black fins like you see on Anakin, Mace and Vader's weapons. I painted some areas silver and did a few gold accents and it looks really good now.

Fortunately after my DA spazzed out I managed to disarm Blake and we traded weapons. Here we are battling it out. The long handle on the Archon is nice and offers good control, it's a light weight weapon with good grip so its suitable for all forms of lightsaber combat except perhaps Makashi or Shien which prefer a curved hilt and a beveled emitter/heavy casing, respectively.

Gotta love a girl who puts up with this sillyness period, much less participates haha! On a serious note, I plan to get detail shots of just my customized hilts, but I'm going to wait til my new sabers arrive so I can get pics of all of them.

Looks cool, your fins are kinda sloppy. I want to see the dark apprentice

Yeah I didnt have a mold to fabricate the fins, and the ones on the cap fell off in battle so it looks even worse. I just freestyled them by laying a bead of hot glue, letting it dry, and adding another and then painting it. I might try to redo it with something better later on.

The Dark Apprentice custom hilt is in another photo with that review, as well as in my collection photos.

why don't you use anything from around the house mate? You could even make some decent fins out of small strokes from a mouse mat or something. That would really finish your saber more than the hot glue stuff and it would work better for grips. I do like the rest of the saber very much. Looks like a Luke homage to me. Keep it up and MTFBWY

The problem is that area is a bit complicated. The back third of it comes off, and that part is slightly lower than the other, or thinner in diameter you could say, as its the battery cap. So what I had to do was do the fins custom then cut through them at the opening point so I could still change batteries.

Ah i understand. What if you cut 2 seperate pieces and line them up evenly on the pommel? Or just use the slip mat on the section above the pommel. Just some ideas.
