Title: Acid-Aged Scorpion "CE" AKA The Silver Scorpion
Post by: Lord Canterbury on February 28, 2016, 04:57:28 AM
Hey All!

This is a little something I've been working on for a very long time now and I'm very happy to finally be able to present it here.

I thought tonight the Emitter Claw needed some more work, so that's not on here in these pics, but aside from that . . .

The Silver Scorpion is done!!!

Since there is no "Scorpion CE" available, I decided to make my own and after several direction changes - I decided to go with the Weathered version you'll see here.

So without further fanfare & nonsense, please enjoy The Silver Scorpion!

As the Subject line suggests - I used a corrosive to remove the anodize and to age the aluminum before polishing it again.

This picture will give you a better idea of the texture & the aging:

This thing really looks like it's a Relic of The Old Republic!   :D

I gave the Emitter some extra corrosion that looks a bit like burns, as if the containment field around the plasma wasn't fully effective and left it a bit scorched.  It's more noticeable on the back & top; will have to get pics of that.

Need to do something about that button; looks too shiny & new!  ;)

And here's the Pommel.  This was interesting; the bottom cap of that pommel spent way more time in "the soup" then any other part yet I couldn't get it to corrode like the Shroud did.  Why? I dunno . . .

Couple shots of the side views that I like:

Finally, this pic isn't the greatest, but it shows the Silver Scorpion next to my regular Scorpion for comparison:

I'll post some more pics after I add the Claw & upgrade the electronics this week.

Thanks for checking this out!  Hope you liked it!

So....that is absolutely gorgeous. I am not to the level where i can award points yet but if i could I definitly would! This may be the best looking saber I have seen on here.

That's a good looking hilt you got there.

The pitted surface really reminds me of cast iron - it's an interesting look.
Definitely a more fitting texture for that hilt than some highly polished finish (What? Bias? Shut up.)

Knowing the amount of time you put into this, it really does look nice - makes me wonder if you'd ever revisit the technique.

That button and the exposed bits under the shroud though...

Honestly though, you did a great job on this.
I don't compliment very many weathering jobs, but this one is certainly deserving.

Lord C that is a nice looking saber, silver looks really good on the Scorpion.  More and more I hope US offers a weathering option for their hilts eventually.  An all silver version of the Scorpion should be released, you have proven to me that it looks awesome on that hilt.

+1

Wow, amazing job! It now looks like an ancient Sith artifact  :o

The finish actually really fits the Scorpion quite nicely and accentuates the details of the hilt. +1 point well deserved! It's curious though that the pommel didn't inherite the same finish. I feel like the material must be different than the hilt body for this to be the case...

I have to ask this: what kind of corrosive did you use?

Post by: Dauntless Seven on February 28, 2016, 05:43:43 PM
Oh this is so awesome.  :o   Another fantastic customization.  To imagine that this was once a red Scorpion.  I like how it is more plasma scorch corrosive and battle beaten at the emitter and less so towards the pommel.  Makes sense.  Over ages of use, the av switch area would be more smooth and polished by the salt and oils of hand/fingertip pressure or from the rub of a glove.   Suppose you could lightly stipple and buff dull it down.  Your Scorpion really is a desirable Sith relic.

+1 to you for outstanding workmanship and review ( again ).   8)

+1 to Drahcir for Loki.   ;D

Wow, Lord C- this is right up my alley, LOVE it!!  Such a cool project.  I always prefer chemical weathering to paint- it takes a lot longer/ more work, but its such a cool, authentic result.  And it's so tough/ permanent.  This looks great- the resulting finish is SO sweet looking and unique- yeah it looks almost like cast as Drahcir said, really cool.  And i think the area surrounding the switch actually makes sense/ looks good- plus it looks like it sits inside a cutout in a shroud, so it looks nice with the distinction between the 'layers' if you know what i mean- adds depth.  Very well done- point awarded.

That's such a marvellous job I almost gave you light side point! (But my jedi control was working properly so DS point it is :))
I really like the whole cyberpunk-look of the hilt!

Ok ... so this turned out well.  +1 ;D  I like the switch, it could kind of lend to premium operational status of an old weapon.  But it could go either way and match the body and be at home that way too.  Congrats on a lot of hard work paying off for a one of a kind lightsaber.

Thanks for all the kind words!  I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Ha ha - not a biased setiment at all from the guy that answered the question "What would it look like if Pigpen from Charlie Brown made Lightsabers?"  ;)  (Hint:  they'd look dirty.)

(Note - if you aren't aware, I'm generally the saber Yin to Drahc's Yang. I typically like my hilts to look PRISTINE whereas we all know what he likes.  We would make excellent arch-enemies in a lightsaber replica superhero movie.)

Funny you asked if I would try again . . . cuz this came out of the Toxic Waste Dump this morning:

Although I am undecided at the moment whether that wants more aging & a polish - or, some paint and some time in the used toaster oven I got just for baking Enamel onto things.

Yeah.  "Things."

Lightsabers.  (Like I'll be baking enamel onto other stuff that fits in a large toaster oven. Helps to justify things though when you rationalize it will be useful for multiple project types.)

In regards to the corrosive, there was obviously only one thing out there strong enough to strip the anodize off & pit the aluminum:  Starbucks Coffee!!!

Kidding - I used drain cleaner.

Which I have now realized . . . well, the "different" part was in fact the shroud from the Scorpion.

I can't get anything else to come out like that with just drain cleaner.

It does do an awesome job, however, on removing the anodize for you.

So I'm going to be doing some research on aging metals - particularly aluminum - as I am leaning that way for the Dom v4 above.

PS - a lot more went into achieving the final look of that Scorpion than just a bath in Drain-O.  Don't want to accidentally give that notion.

Will you look at that . . . O.M.G. that looks awesome . . . +1  8)

There are 2 hilts I have had no interest in, the Scorpion & Guardian, don't know why, but I've never been drawn to them . . . but this is amazing, and in BR just looks sensational, and with the pitted effect you've got there . . . VERY well done . . .  :D

It's been mentioned as a "Sith Artifact" a bunch, but it stuns in Guardian Blue as well!

My Lord....what words can I give to describe the feeling I have after seeing this!?  ORGASMIC!  Your saber is definately a one of a kind and I don't blame you for retaining it!  How could you part with such Sithiness!? You trying to make Drahcir lose sleep at night?  You've really got something there and I really look forward to your next project!  POINT!   :D

Shiny......ish.

For the work, you have accomplished much. It actually looks like you and Drach collaborated on the project with the exception that Drach's design usually look.......dirtier. But we don't call him Dirty Drach for nothin'. Good job. Maybe you two can be a double act: Dirty Drach and Clean Canty. :P

US needs to make weathered hilts an option and hire Drahcir (Or somebody who knows their way around paints and dremels) to do it.
Rock it for the profit.

Of course you're kidding.  There would be nothing left of it (except the usual horrid burnt smell) if you used Starbucks coffee.  :D

Anyway, nice job!  I'm not generally a weathering fan (sorry Drahcir ;) ), but that looks great.

Wow tht looks amazing. An all silver scorpion would be nice, but this is even better with the aging effect. The burn effect on the emitter is fantastic. Someday going to have to get brave enough to tear one my sabers apart and do some real customizing to it.

Absolutely incredible looking. Very sweet effect on it. I was never too keen on weathering any of my shiny new sabers from Ultra Sabers, but over the last couple of months I've observed some very impressive work that is changing my opinion of it, and this one is one of the best looking ones I've seen. It would require a great deal of bravery for me to dare this kind of customization, but examples like this make me want to try.

Have a point that I would've give you last year had I been here then, but at that time I had no clue about this wonderful place, Ultra Sabers and sabercraft in general. You could definitely say my life is way better now with than without.
