Nice nice. I'm going to do this to my Aeon V3. Though do you have to make the paper more flush with the grooves? I might get green colored paper.

Do you know if there is like a more darker wood finish? Having some ideas of what to do to my Aeon V3. For any tips check out my post I did of my custom Aeon V3. Has my old TCSS pommel. I'll take any ideas. =]

Menards had a light wood and a dark wood. The dark looks like a mahogany.

The wraps are no slicker than an aluminum hilt.

Though on my aluminum hilts I like to add grips as I don't spin much.

Does heat/sweat/usage make the paper start to move, exposing any adhesive?

Watched the linked video. In past experiences detailing vehicles and doing window tints i have learned that a clean surface is the best surface. Window tint prewash or an alcohol based cleaner might be a good thing to use on the area you wish to cover. It will remove all of the oils from handling the grip and will make the contact remain for longer. Also to get a closer finish I might use an exacto-knife instead of scissors. The tint wash can be picked up at any auto parts store or even The Home Depot.

Just wanted to chime in after watching him get his hands all over the surface and then tacking on the product.

Thats a very good tip, and not just for contact paper, but any "applied" customization like paint, etc.

I Like the tip, just not the medium, the paper he used looks way to...... idk, cheap?  I would have to find something really epic to put on my saber to custom it like that,  maybe the vid wasn't doing the contact paper justice for me.  anyways thx for the tutorial

I used a stainless steel finish contact paper on one of my "Dark" hilts and it came out ok. You can even whether it by rubbing a paper towel over it.

Thanks for the helpful tutorial. My brother is looking into getting an Apprentice, but wanted to maybe make it more earthen looking with wood. This may do the trick.

I didn't read all of the comments so someone may have mentioned the "missed" step. Clean the surface you are applying the material to first!  I use 90+% isopropyl alcohol, but rubbing alcohol is fine (just not the mint kind). While I've not done it to a saber, I have done it to other cylindrical items like barrel tubes on airguns...carbon fiber and other vinyl type wraps. Good stuff and using a hair dryer (can use a heat gun, but most people have access to a hair dryer) helps both position and stretch the material a little bit if needed. It will also help you push the material into those grooves if you have a grooved hilt.  I'm waiting for some parts to rebuild an older project I was working on so maybe I'll do a crappy little video or at least a before/after of carbon fiber vinyl on a grooved hilt.

This gave me yet another idea.

Has anyone tried to use Leather Tape?

Cool idea ! It would be awesome for a Yoda style nature based Jedi ! You could totally build a character around it.

Kept looking at this thread and thinking of trying it, but i'm not a wood grain type of lightsaber wielder. Finally taking the plunge and purchased 2 different types of contact paper. I received a azure reaper in a mystery box I wanted to mod, but black heat shrink looked odd on it. I'll try the contact paper on it instead, with various combinations. When I do the mod, i'll make a thread about it and probably post a couple pics.

Thanks for the tutorial. Point to you.
