Title: LUMINA Sport
Post by: Lady Revan on February 07, 2019, 04:17:15 AM
So the place where I learn sabers was recently featured on AOL "In the Know" for a segment on "LUMINA," which is a combat choreography based sport developed by the head instructor here :) This was the segment. Thought I would share! :D

Sorry... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-UGaGZvBhY#)

The first season just finished :) Guy with the green saber in the bandanna ended up taking first place. "Thom" who you see interviewed was second.

Is it just me or do the ladies seem to prefer the staff?

None of the Ladies in this video actually specialize in staff even though the clips where they're shown they're using. "Uzel" and the tiny blonde one both typically use single saber and the tall skinny girl is primarily a dual wielder, but there are certain choreographies that are written specifically to be done with staff, which are the ones they're doing in the video. Only staff specialist we have is the guy you see using it the most in the video.

wish our groups were close. We don't have anyone else in our neck of the woods. I'd love to just be a participant!

seriously, thanks for the share on that. I've subbed.

I see, you switch weapons depending on the choreography. :)

I wish we had something like this here. But we don't.

:D If you go to their website, they also have tutorials for many of the "CMs" (Choreographed Movements) to learn online.

Yup! They're currently putting together a CM (Choreographed Movement) for Dual Sabers VS Staff based on some of the moves from the Force unleashed game.

Anyone can actually put together a LUMINA chapter in their area :) feel free to PM me for info if you're interested.

always looking to learn. I'll check it out

we have Ligei Clarrel Pope teach us when he comes into town from California for seminars we host. the guy is crazy at capoeira and works as a stuntman from time to time.

I run the J.o.E. LSC on the side when im not teaching at the Academy :)

I don't really have the resources for that... plus I'm sure It'd end up just being me anyway, even the martial arts places seem to struggle.

Sounds like fun! Like I said to TJ, anyone can set up a LUMINA chapter in their area.

All of the people there are awesome! We call it the saber fam <3 Super tight community. A lot of them also participate in the Saber Guild and/or Saber Legion Chapters here, so you get a wide variety of perspectives and experiences

Been looking to find something like this recently. I see from the info on YT that this is in Miami. Do you know of any thing like it on the West Coast?

In terms of the sport, it is currently unique to Saber Craft in Miami, but is open to anyone starting a chapter anywhere. On the West Coast I believe you have Golden Gate Knights as the big choreography group. If you’re wanting choreography performance in costume though, I would check out Saber Craft. They have A LOT of temples and squads on the West Coast

Sweet! Thanks for the information. In costume sounds like the most fun to me, but I just want people to play with no matter what. :)

CRAP! I misspoke.... if you’re into choreography with costume for performance, check out SABER GUILD. Not Saber Craft. The two have no affiliation. Saber Guild is Lucas Films Recognized And has several temples on the West Coast

Personally, I enjoy both, but in costume has the extra charm and appeal of being the characters.

OH! Ken, this upcoming Saturday is an open sabers and LUMINA session if you’re of a mind to come down. Open saber sessions are $10 at the door, which helps the group pay for the space. Time is 10AM to 1 PM.

Can't already booked for that time  :( or I would be there.

P.S. I'm on Discord so not I need to find the person and start on my costume.  You're right, in costume while dueling = Awesome!

Awesome! “Darth Varis” is super helpful. His work schedule is really busy though, so don’t be offended if it takes a bit to get a reply. He’s also our Kylo. I keep telling him he should make a Darth Bandon. First time I saw him, KotOR nerd that I am, I assumed that was his costume

I actually got ahead in lessons through the videos and was able to start my first class going into the advanced because I'd already learned the fundamentals. It's possible to learn the motions on your own, without a partner, and technically without a saber too. I know because I've done it lol. As long as you keep your swings controlled and learn where to stop them knowing approximately where you will make contact, learning the choreographed movements even without a partner is very doable.

That's awesome, I'm going to try also if you seen my videos I spin mostly I'm actually excellent in controlled strikes from kali. I learned about the different densities of contact from bottom to top of a weapon I'm only explaining myself cause I never do that kind of video but I should make 1 so I don't look bad 🤦‍♂️😭

You should be more than capable of picking it up quickly on your own then. I had almost 0 experience going in. Just make sure to start with the temporal notation system and get very comfortable memorizing where your strikes are before you start trying to apply them to choreography. Once you get used to it, you can lean a choreography from the notation sheets without seeing it first as well :)

If you're looking for Choreography Saber classes, look into Saber Guild Empire Temple. They have classes. Let them know that the Revan from Miami says hi if you do!

They’re great people! LUMINA is not affiliated with Saber Guild, but the temples of Saber Guild usually have great choreography classes.

Last week's LUMINA match. My partner and I were going so slow, but both of us where having to do opposite parts of some CMs than we were used to because we were trying to maximize on points with all the bonuses that were in play. Normally the max score possible it 42, but with the bonuses there was a possible 58 that game. I actually made a game plan for us to get max, but we ran out of time because we weren't going fast enough. We got 44. (our match starts at 16:15, we were last)

They're supposed to "see it coming." The point of combat choreography is to be completely in synch with your partner. reactions are acting (or supposed to be). The second battle was "Vek'tra." She is the one in the Anakin/Dooku videos with me. Mine is the last battle.

Best bet would be checking the online tutorials at sabercraft.org . You can register for free and have access to all of their videos and worksheets. Anyone can start a LUMINA chapter in their area. As of right now, the only official one I am aware of at the moment is in Miami.

If anyone is at Florida SuperCon 4th of July weekend, Sabercraft will be hosting multiple workshops and you can ask directly to learn more about LUMINA. Ultrasabers will also be there, so you can pick up a new saber, then come on over and use it :D
