Title: First Piece Of Jedi Costume
Post by: Zren Tobas on December 21, 2012, 12:17:03 AM
As the title says. Bought my first piece for my Jedi costume. Just a simple white long sleeve shirt. Sorry its not V neck though. xp Next I plan to get brown pants and brown boots, then to joanns to get 2 inch black fabric for a classicier kind of belt. Most of the costume is at walmart. I'm on a budget so. xp Plus I'm more into the classic costumes anyway. I'll post a pic when I get everything else.

Looks quite similar to the Endor Commando shirt! Though the collar might be slightly different, the color and cut look very close. Double costume duty, perhaps? ;)

Nope. Just going to be the simple shirt, dark brown pants, and boots all from walmart. xp Like I aid I';m costuming on a bugjet so I can't go all fancy but it'll still look good either way. I plan to get me some fabric too so I can do the belt. Its going to be brown. Going for that classic look. The boots I found at walmart are perfect for the costume.

Awesome. I've gotten a lot of good costume gear on a budget like that before. Usually looks good if you do it right, since the whole OT wardrobe was pretty much an on a budget affair in the first place. lol

That's what gave me the idea. =] I'm more into the OT costumes anyway. Nice and simple. The pants will have pockets though but that won't be able to be helped. xp You think I should do dark brown or light brown for the pants? They will be basic walmart dickies or whatever is available...

Dark. And I think you can cover up those pockets if you work the belt right. You'd have to go for the double belt like the prequel style though, but you can make one using a woman's fashion belt and a regular men's belt that will look great for about 15 bucks. Or perhaps you could cut up a T-Shirt and make a sort of tattered looking Kama to wear under the belt. You could attach it to the belt, and it would hang down covering the pockets, but still letting you see the belt. You could cut it with a thin V up the back too and it would give an effect a little like tabbards as well, which would help people ID you at cons or on halloween. Not that the lightsaber isn't a dead giveaway. lol

I'm actually going to get a piece of fabric cut at 2 inches but long enough to wrap around me atleast once. The 2 inches should be wide enough to cover the pockets yeah?

I'd say 4" would be better, and use that as the Obi / Sash then get a regular leather belt with a square or oval buckle and wear it over the sash to make it look right. Even the OT had that sash on the Jedi outfits, and the leather belts are fairly cheap these days. 8 Bucks or so, assuming you don't already have one.

I actually do but it has wolves printed on and its brown too. I could be a decorative warrior I guess? I will request 4 inches then and how long would you say to go?

I haven't done Star Wars costuming, but I've done my share of Sci-Fi and Star Trek (maybe someday I'll grace everyone with pictures) and over the years I've really learned that Military Surplus stores are AWESOME for much of your costume.  Wal-Mart is great for many things, I'm really prone to plain colored long sleeved turtlenecks which you can usually get in two and three packs for under $20.  Ebay and Amazon are also for some of those stylish random pieces that can make or break the perfect outfit, and never overlook your local craft stores, you'd be amazed at the little things that you can find there.

why not checking out your local thrift store? i have done many halloween costumes from items i found at the salvation army or the goodwil plus the money you spend there goes to support the organization you bought it from. plus you could probably get a decent coustume peiced together for around $20.

All good advice. Personally, on  length for the sash/obi belt, I lean towards having enough to wrap around your waist 2 1/2 to 3 times. This means you can get some good body to it and you don't have to use velcro to attach it, you can just tuck it into itself and that looks MUCH better. It also allows you to let one or both ends dangle for a more roguish look if you so choose.

I'll figure it out once I get everything. =] For pants they will most likely be brown dickies or something liket that since they do look like Jedi pants somewhat.

Just my two cents - a nice, easy way to get something Jedi-looking is to look for a martial arts uniform as a base.  They can run pretty cheap, 30 bucks IIRC, and you can get them in a few different colors (I prefer black).  Throw a robe or cloak over it and you have a very Jedi (or Sith) style costume.

Eh. I just want the shirt and pants and belt. something nice and simple for now. We don't have karate places around here anymore at all or I would buy one. Kinda sucks. xp

I've found a few online.

When I put mine together, years ago, I found some slacks by a company called Braggi I think. They're wrinkle proof, and if you tuck them into your boots you get a nice baggy flare around the tops, the creases dissappear, and they are a dead wringer for Jedi pants or smuggler's garb. They made them in Chocolate Brown and Black at the time, but there may be other colors I didn't see. They were like 20 bucks when I bought them. Try looking for those. :)

In my country, gi uniforms are available in every sports shop. Probably has to do with our president being a martial artist.

@Rina. Nice. I'm finishing up my costume tonight. :D I'm not the only one that did it out of store bought stuff. Someone on the facebook page also did a Sith costume from scraps and such. I'll make sure to post pictures later today. =]

So here is a preview pic of my Jedi outfit. Its just all store bought stuff. I thought the boots wen't perfectly with it. The pants are George fancy pants. The sash/belt is going to be made tomorrow. Hope it passes. xp More pics to come Saturday night. =] I say sash because I'm going for the Starkiller dream robe look. I didn't want to go all fancy like you know. Doesn't always have to be professional fancy. That's how I see it anyway.
