Title: Question about a blade mod
Post by: Jedi1972 on January 21, 2013, 12:07:40 AM
This is kina a repost of another post i made ( cant seem to find the other one :) ) I had an idea for a cheap/easy blade mod that would allow quick on -off of the blade. I thought to use either clear heatshrink tube or package tape to create a tight friction fit of the base of the blade. I wanted to be able to take the blade on and off relativly fast. has any one tried this yet.

I have, and I would definitely recommend that you DON'T do it! It seems fine at first, but as the tape ages, it loosens up. I had a blade go flying out of the emitter and across a room. Do NOT use tape.

At least use a thumbscrew. It will give you both piece of mind that the blade will stay where you keep it, and the quick release mechanism you're looking for at the same time. Shrink wrap is not a good long-term idea either, I don't think. At least with the thumbscrew, you'd be able to pop the blade plug in too to the keep the MLS unit in if you wanted to clip it to a covertec. I wouldn't say full-on duels would be possible, but you'd be able to swing it around a little without the blade popping out.

True. i hadnt thought about the mls unit comming out. perhaps some one will come up with a better idea for a quick detach system down the road. my bad by heat shrink, i did mean the type used on electronic wires, i know it does come in large diamiters, and is fairly tough.  i re read my post and decided i had used the wrong terminology.  but for now ill just stick to the set screw provided.

as Eerock stated thumscrew best option u dont need and allen key to loosen or tighten u can do on the fly, just find out what your setscrew is usually 8/32 or 10/32 and get a thumbscrew to match the threads

It's tops $5 at a hardware store and you can find one that will fit in the retention hole that already exists. It's like it was meant to be and it keeps your swag safe and secure! (and those around you too!)

I like to be able to convert my sabers from action to costume really quick and thumbscrew is the best way to do this and stay safe.  Also, I suggest getting steel thumb screws over aluminum.  I have purchased three aluminum thumb screws and all three have broken clean with the emitter requiring very delicate drilled and retapping to correct.  My steel thumb screws don't do this.
