We’ve watched the various characters of Game of Thrones spend two seasons learning who they are, while slowly discovering their respective roles in the destiny of Westeros. If these season 3 trailers are anything to judge by, the upcoming chapter of the “Game” will involve more swordplay than politics and introspection.

Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) has saved King’s Landing from invasion, leaving his son Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and daughter Cersei (Lena Headey) in grey areas of power, while boy-king Joffrey still runs amok. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) continues to come into her own as a dragon-wielding warlord – with a new army standing behind her, from the looks of things.

Robb Stark (Richard Madden) is slowly being bogged down by his war against the Lannisters; Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) is reeling from his defeat at King’s Landing, looking to his red witch Melisandre (Carice van Houten) for new prophecy; Bran and Rickon Stark are still on the run across the North lands; Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) and Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) continue their odd-couple trek across the midlands; while Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) plays spy games living amongst the Wildlings, whose king, Mance Rayder (Ciarán Hinds), plans war against the Night’s Watch.

If you have trouble keeping track of the bigger picture, Games of Thrones has been steadily building conflict and danger on many levels – from the political games of King’s court to the savage power struggles in the land’s across the Narrow Sea (Daenerys’ storyline) – to the looming threat of the White Walkers, who (as we saw in the season 2 finale) are ready to exterminate all life in Westeros – no matter which king/queen ends up wearing the crown.

This new season is based on author George R.R. Martin’s third novel in the series, titled “A Storm of Swords.” Fans of the show should note that fans of the books often and almost unanimously refer to book 3 as the best in the series (so far); needless to say, everyone is therefore expecting great things from this new season of the show (more action, more ‘game-changing’ plot twists, etc…).

And my, aren’t those CGI dragons getting big…

I suggest everyone prepare themselves...A Storm of Swords is brutal.

It looks pretty good, I enjoyed the previous two seasons except for one minor problem.  Other than a couple of personal, mostly one-on-one duels, all the battle scenes were omitted.  Now, maybe in the novels they were skipped over as well [I've never had the opportunity to read them], but the only actual battle scene we got to see was the small one in the Season 2 season finale I believe.

I just hope all these cool scenes aren't a cop out.  I mean, looking at people's body parts in a provocative manner is intriguing and all and it makes for interesting drinking games [of water and juice (for the kids{?})], but sometimes I could just go for some battle scenes as those never seem to get old.

I think it's had a lot to do with a limited budget. A big scale battle, real or CGI, can get pretty pricey.
Hopefully as the series progresses they'll get more resources to do some larger scale events with. There are some pretty epic events still to come.
