Title: Having trouble with Windows Movie Maker. Please help.
Post by: TheHobbitofDune on March 28, 2013, 01:58:11 AM
For the past two days, I've been working nonstop on this special little video. Today, a ton of my clips have gone haywire, as in, little exclamation point icons show up on their thumbnails, and WMM tells me that they are all corrupted or incompatible files. I know they aren't incompatible because they are all MP4 files, and I've never had this issue with any of my other videos. So maybe they are all corrupted, but how? Why?

I seriously do not want to have to scrap this project when I'm this close to the finish line. At the same time, I really don't want to have to re-download all of my clips, re-trim all of my clips, and re-edit all of my clips, but I'll do it if I have to.

I don't know if this is related or not, but this only started happening after I added a picture to my video. But I reverted to my last save, when the picture wasn't in the video, and even more of my clips have started screwing up on me.

It's silly, but have you tried rebooting your computer? That usually clears up any weird behavior in WLMM for me.

PM me if you like as well!

It didn't work. Ugh. I hate you, WMM :( I'll delete and re-download all of the clips, and if that still doesn't work, I'll PM you.

It didn't work. Ugh. I hate you, WMM :(

I love the program... until it does this!

Here's something to try: Open the photo you're trying to insert using MS Paint, click save as, and save the file again, but in a different location (or using a different name) than the original. Make sure the name uses letters and numbers only, and eliminate special characters and spaces. SamplePic01.xxx for example. Try importing the newly saved image.

If it's a video clip that's causing the issue, open the problematic file in a new Window of WLMM, (if you were able to isolate which one it was),  and immediately save the file out as you did the photo in Paint. See if that solves the corruption.

I'm here if it doesn't. :)

Eerock might be right. one corrupt movie vid and the whole thing can go caput. it also happens when you delete or remove the original videos off the computer.

I just saved the picture under a different name, then put it in my video, but that didn't solve anything. I also don't know which file caused the problem, since its completely random which one pops up as corrupted or incompatible whenever I open the project back up. Usually, its multiple files all at once. I also didn't delete any of the clips, so that's not the issue.

Hang on... You are using Windows LIVE Movie Maker, right? I'm not even sure in the old school WMM is even supported anymore.

It's a PITA, and I'm sorry to suggest it, but try uninstalling the program, running a chkdsk on your drive, and then reinstalling WLMM.

Offhand, are any other programs acting strangely for you lately?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started) is for Windows Live Movie Maker.

I am using Windows Live Movie Maker. Will I still be able to access the project if I reinstall it? And no, no other program is acting strangely for me. Also, thanks you guys. I've been a bit flustered because of this whole mess. Well, also because I've had to download an absurd amount of videos, then import them into WMM, which has made my computer run at a snail's pace, which just drives me insane. My point is that you guys deserve points for continually pointing me in the right direction :D We'll solve this eventually.

The project, if you saved the project file and didn't move the videos you imported in, will be readable again with a fresh reinstallation. Just axe WLMM and reinstall it. After you reboot and load the project again, hopefully things will work as expected. Again, I'll be here, but this time, with fingers crossed

I did all of that, and its still not working.

I'm just gonna give up. I've lost all desire to work on this.
