Title: Padawn saber from some scrap parts
Post by: DarthCooper88 on April 09, 2013, 07:55:38 PM
This is a saber for a friend's 5 yr old Daughter, she can quote all six movies and is an early addict! I have been getting a bit fried lately spending many hours in my machine shop on a few top secret and commission builds (thats why you havent seen much from this camp lately, Shhhhh....its a secret!!!) I had an Anankin 2007 MR board that used to live in my 1st saber, a Prophecy V2 from here. I pulled it quite awhile ago and made sure to break wires and be really rough with it upon removal ;D.
After looking around the garage and coming up with some metal (found a piece of aluminum pipe my Dad had used for a shovel handle when I was a kid (had to be metal I broke too many wooden ones) . The piece was all pitted had some weld boogers on it but still looked viable.
The outside dimension is 1.3" which is smaller than most MHS by near a 1/4 " , I cut a hilt section 9" long, did some lathe work with a boring bar to fit a 4aaa battery holder, bored out the front 3" for a blade holder tube, drilled a few holes tapped them. I used an olde air compressor piece for the rear pommel and one of my heat-sink/led combo's , a little leather wrap a reused control box I was never going to use (like to make my own) a Graflex red button replica for the blade set screw, a seoul P4 green LED,(way overdriven) and a Regal 1.5 watt speaker. This took me all of 5 hours total from start to finish, the only thing I didnt make from scratch was the control box and Graflex piece. The fun part is that the little girl has no clue I built it for her, and her Mom I dont believe took me seriously when I mentioned wanting to make one for her!....Enjoy :D

Thanks guys! I used a technique that I'm trying to engineer into more hilts that i build from scratch, and that is to have a fastener do more than hold one thing. On the control box, the front screw holds the blade holder tube in place ( no glue , tight tolerance fit) the same screw also goes into the outer led holder and then threads into the heatsink right below the led. it eliminates a bunch of extra holes and keeps the design quick and simple to machine

Fantastic work - both on the 'sabre, and for encouraging a young obsessive!

That is so cool! Point for you!

I wish I had the skills to make a lightsaber light that. I have made one with LED's in the hilt, but couldn't figure out how to make a blade that lights up so I used a broom handle I painted fluorescent green. lol

I have a couple questions about adding a crystal chamber to my saber can I message you?

Thanks and it just so happens that my 1st saber that I built in 1978 is still a broom handle with fluorescent paint
