Title: Scorpion "Dissection" - Looks can be deceiving :D
Post by: jmPlagueis on June 20, 2013, 01:29:34 AM
I am blown away.

After removing the shroud, It was like gazing upon a hidden treasure!

This video shows what the Scorpion is REALLY made of, and I hope many of you find this helpful

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te30scUSXmA&feature=youtu.be

EDIT: I just found out that the emitter separates from the large window piece as well!!

Wow! Had no idea there were so many parts in that saber.

Can you show us what the scorpion looks like without the claw?

WOW. Now I want to buy this just as a body or as MHS parts.
I want US to sell those parts and the pommel on the custom saber section.

Oh is it a MLS or a LED module?
It looks like a MLS

Nice video, I love seeing how it comes apart.  Probably a silly question, but how did you get the switch off in order to remove the shroud?

I used a mini flat head screw driver and carefully did the rest with needle nose pliers, then snipped the wires

eerockk just brought it to my attention that it would be A LOT easier to add a JST quick connector to the switch to make things easier

so how did you remove the switch and is av removable the same way?

Not to be a downer but the AV's are much more difficult to remove. They usually are secured in the hilt with a nut on the backside of the switch (inside the hilt)

And I believe they glue it into place to make the nut stay put.

Yeah thats the downside with AV's.... they are a pain to install and uninstall if you use the bezel & nut method

I will have to remember that for my next saber.

The AVs are press fit, and to get mine to stay in the hilt snugly after I took it out, I wrapped the switch threads with teflon tape and without a tool, the switch won't budge.

Sweet the idea of a crystal chamber is still possible! And points for the both of you

Negative on that doube E.

To secure our AV switches we use backing nuts and/or ultra-tac high performace polyamide glue.  Our guarded switches are press fit.

Ahh, so my teflon tape replaced the glue and made my AV switch press-fit, but after the fact. No wonder that switch was so hard to remove! I thought it was silicone epoxy!  ;)

Thanks for letting me know, Deep! (and thank goodness that the Prophecy's wasn't held in by the backing nut, cause that would have driven me bonkers trying to get that out!  ;D)

Well is there a video on how to properly remove an av switch?

You would have to melt the glue in order to loosen the nut, without damaging the switch. Now that I think about it, I really don't know if it is even possible. The MLS unit is blocking the emitter so you wouldnt have a way to stick anything down in the saber, unless you did it through the bottom of the saber. In either situation you would definitely burn up wire coating and would be left with exposed wires.

This leaves you run the HUGE risk of damaging your Obsidian. In my honest opinion, it isn't worth it :/

Using Bluespike's trick with masking tape on the hilt to avoid scratching, some good prying with a flat screwdriver and a few 'choice words' freed up the Prophecy's switch within a few minutes. I did have to cut the brown FoC wire from the glue to free the wire, but everything happened without a hitch or damage. It's like anything with these saber mods in that it might take a little extra time to be careful and do it properly.

Thank you for this insightful video. I'm definitely sold on this saber now. I'm even tempted to get one for show and a stunt to dissect myself. A lightside point for you for clearing the shadows!

Think a mini-igniter would fit into this thing? I'd have to send it to another sabersmith to have the guts installed, but would be worth it to have a color changing scorpion!

Any chance this video could be re-uploaded? I really want to see what the possibilities are with this saber in terms of disassembly, but can't find any information.

I can't help with the original video but I did this:

http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=24304.0

And this:

http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=24485.0

with my Scorpion & Crimson Scorpion.

They're in pieces at the moment so I will try to get a pic of what it looks like completely taken apart in the next couple days and post it here in this thread.

Awesome! Thanks. Out of curiosity, once you get the emitter off (which sounds simple) is it easy to get to the MLS to potentially swap out colors? What I'd love is to have a scorpion where I can use the emitter, pommel and MLS in other sabers.

i didn't order it with the quick disconnects (added my own later) but yeah, if you order the stuff set up like that it should be easy.

Keep in mind though - the Blade portion does not screw to the Emitter, it gets screwed into the body.  So you can't swap that around from hilt to hilt MHS-style.

And actually- the outer diameter of the Scorpion is a bit wider than most, so there will be a small lip on most sabers you put the Pommel.

Will post pics of all that.

Great! Thanks for the help; it seems as if I am changing decisions for my next purchase on a daily basis! So many fantastic sabers and options to choose from... And I thought I was only going to buy one!

I'm quickly learning that... but my wallet is putting up a good fight.  As much as I'd love to reduce cost by just going with stunts, it seems a crime to withhold sound from these hlits!

I thought the same early on - but i've come to learn, Sound is not always practical, for a variety of reasons.

Especially if you're practicing.  It's really loud and drains the batteries quicker.  Plus if its late and you have young children . . .   :-\

I think a year ago I wanted every hilt they have fully loaded.  After living with them for a while I've found I'm often happy with just a gorgeous hilt & a bright blade.  And - while there are certain hilts I want to keep perfectly intact, there are others I'm happy to just move the electronics around as I feel like it.

Im sure I'll ger to that point... But not before another few hundred dollars fly out of my pockets!  Right now, eyeing a Obsidian Manticore and a War Glaive emitter to do double-duty as a Jedi and Sith hilt.

Try the War Glaive Emitter as a Pommel on something; it looks wicked!
