Title: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: Master Rel on August 07, 2013, 06:23:56 PM The sort of elemental (full form shape shift/change) that is part and parcel of that element...think fantasy or superhero...your whole body transforms into this element and your abilities are reflected in the potential use of the same.
Now, before the regular crowd shuffles in...looking to combine elements, have multiple elements, or otherwise circumvent a simple thought process...one...just one elemental aspect. It will be magical based and as such can include such esoteric considerations as "wind", but other than that we are talking about a specific single word element to base the form and function of your elemental character. Some potential considerations... fire rock sand water metal etc. (esoteric) wind flora fauna spirit concrete etc. While fire, rock, water, and sand are easy to picture and wrap heads around some of the others could be more challenging to picture...so explain yourself if an odd choice...that is part of the fun after all, letting others in our your processes. Example... Flora...body changes into plant life...vines, woody, leaves, fruit, berries, whatever...clearly a touch control of plants sort of thing...make them grow, control them, etc. Fauna...classic would be the animal shapechanger, in part like a gorilla arm or in whole like a gorilla...or non-classical like clusters of animals like a whole body made of insects...bees, wasps, ants, roaches, etc...not all potential animals in part or whole, create a theme. Concrete...yes yes...a combined aspect which goes against the combined rule...but in this case it would represent a whole "concrete" and not the cement, sand, aggregate, etc...so no shifting between the elements, just concrete...could be wet or cured concrete...that sort of thing...a created or man made element. You get the idea. Describe if you would be a superhero, supervillain, aloof elemental hermit, or other. Provide a pic if you can find one or at least describe the look of the character in elemental form...and this form could be permanent...a curse or a blessing. Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: eerockk on August 07, 2013, 07:45:58 PM I'd be a fire elemental as per my Zodiac sign Leo.
The closest thing I could think of is the Human Torch from Fantastic 4. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Torch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Torch) I'd be happy being a conscious disembodied plasma cloud as well. If you need me, I'll be lounging about in the magnetosphere! Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: Sin Obsidian on August 07, 2013, 08:43:10 PM I'd have to go back to my early days of LARPing in high school and say Void Elemental (if that is allowable). Those suckers with some of the nastiest things around (as in, Plot would only send out 2 or 3 lesser ones for a whole town battle and that was it). Good times.

Quite specific and game related :) Think more superhero. The fantasy aspect was to account for the magical aspect. Not elementals as per the monsters from D&D or Pathfinder. Sorry for the confusion. But in regards to your thought process...an intangible aspect...perhaps the spirit element...this sort typically passes through material without issue (though some like energy or perhaps an odd metal could cause injury) and could partially materialize to cause damage or to affect the material world...some even have the theme focus of using other bodies, wearing them like a glove or a suit of clothes. Maybe something like that? Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: Master Rel on August 08, 2013, 01:03:05 AM (http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/mAZfcr5ezbI/hqdefault.jpg)

And since I couldn't decide on a water elemental pic, here's one of Poseidon that I found interesting.

can turn powers on and off at will can have Thor style attacks or control computers or even put people into seizures, but is still learning all his powers. Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: B1ondeange1 on August 08, 2013, 11:39:44 AM Funnily enough I have a story character I made up along these lines :P
Fire. Definitely fire, with a heroine style character. The ability to control fire with her mind, to walk in it/ wrap it around herself without being burnt. Throw fireballs, making things catch on fire and burn even if they shouldn’t, imbue weapons with fire to make them more deadly. As her ability with fire increases, she gained the ability to transform into flame. A bit human torch style. Though she doesn't fly with her powers. She discovered her ability while being attacked by some baddies as a teen- she was terrified, wished she had some way to escape- then suddenly the baddies clothes were on fire, and she took off. She realised she had an ability with fire, and taught herself how to control it, learning new things as she went. Now she uses her abilities to protect her people from other bad people and monsters. Downside is she has a fiery nature. She is quick to anger, is emotional and a bit brash, doesn't always think before she acts. Fire responds to her emotions- if she’s near fire (torch, fireplace, campfire etc) and she’s angry, upset, scared etc the flames will flare up. She can control this but it takes a great deal of willpower. If someone annoys her too much and she's not in full control of her power, there’s a chance they’ll have little fireballs suddenly head their way, or their clothing will suddenly catch fire, whether she means to do it or not. This distances her from others a little. My actual story character is a bit more complex, and kinda breaks rels rule of one element :P but ill share it regardless. Her people, a tribal human like species, has a strong affinity with wolves, some are able to speak the language of wolves. Fire is the element of transformation, and she has a unique ability to take the shape of a giant wolf but with solid fire due to her connection with a wolf spirit. Very handy especially when fighting other tribes or monsters, however it further complicates things since whenever she’s in wolf form she runs the risk of losing control completely and turning into a vicious creature with no qualms about killing. The longer she stays in wolf form, the harder it is to force herself to change back. But when she’s in her human like form, she feels the constant desire to change into the wolf form- the longer she spends in human form the stronger the desire. It’s a constant internal battle. Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: Kresnik on August 08, 2013, 01:59:35 PM I'd go with a Dream elemental ...
I have the ability to manipulate people's dreams and can make them day dream if I needed a hasty escape ... I would take normal human form but when I used my "ability" I would disappear and end up in there dream .. Think Freddy Krueger but I would use it for good ... Inception like ... Infiltrate the dreams of bad people and make them see the light .. Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? You can't just play along...always has to be "I can literally do anything?"... An abstract aspect of physics could be in there for sure...but what area of physics, what "element" are you thinking. The idea is not to wield powers but to be the power...fire, man made of fire...rock, man made of rock...of course there is more to the details...but there still need s to be a specific defining aspect...something to become or to be transformed into permanently like Swamp Thing who is the avatar of the life force of the swamp...the element of swamp mana...that one is a bit of a stretch but a fun one. The element I happened to choose was the Laws of Physics. If Kresnik can can be a Dream Elemental, my choice should be just as valid. As to the "can do anything" aspect, I can find amazingly powerful uses for any super ability, and being an elemental of the Laws of Physics allows me to rewrite those laws as I see fit, even if it's limited to a small area. It would be a lot of work ... Not necessarily. You are a Dream Elemental. You do not wield the power of dreams. You ARE the power of dreams. Your entire form is suffused with that power, which means that you would be even more powerful than Freddy Krueger. Freddy was able to manipulate people's existing dreams only if they knew about him (If nobody knew who he was, nobody could dream about him). Where Freddy could manipulate dream on a dramatic yet limited way, you would be the living embodiment of dreams. A good analogy would be in the Marvel Universe: Beta Ray Bill may be worthy of Mjolnir and the powers of Thor: the God of Lightning, but Thor himself IS that god. Beta Ray Bill may have some serious power advantages, but Thor far outclasses him. Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? I asked him to further define his dream element aspect as well...I am thinking he transforms into dream stuff...dust...glitter...or whatever...and enters a person's dreams. You almost always go for the extreme and it was expected, but this truthfully was a lazy attempt. I can appreciate the finding loop holes as it is a thing that some people live for...like those who must barter even when it is inappropriate...but at least pick an aspect of physics that appeals to you and work with that. Because as is...it is just the element of Magic...and that is completely overpowered. You have had some clever creative processes before but this one is just a cheap shot. As an elemental I would have a deep understanding of dreams I would be the physical embodiment of dreams yes but a dream is not a mind control it is only planting ideas , pleasure or painful dreams etc. I would not physically manifest myself as the dream telling someone to do something or not, it would be a dream. The limit to my power would be that I could not express myself in the dream world as a physical being meaning I could not get Into your head and "manipulate" I could only display a story or event and have the person react to it in the dream. For example if I knew about a truly evil person I would simply force them to dream of pretty flowers and laughing babies ... If I wanted a person to do something I would just play it out in their dream. I would be physical in form but could disperse into a whisp like form... Whenever I did this though it would make me age based on the beneficial act or malevolent act... Kind of a working karma... If I made people dream of positive things and positive actions I remain young if I force evil and malevolence I age rapidly and die ... Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: Jev Moldara on August 09, 2013, 12:48:31 PM Okay, how about this?
Elemental: Conscience I am Conscience. I do not control the actions of people, I simply guide them toward the right path while letting them retain their free will. I am that still, small voice in the back of your mind telling you that what you are doing is wrong. When a criminal sees their victims out of the corner of their eye, that is me. When you stop your vehicle in traffic to rescue an animal so it won't get run over, I am the sudden urge to use that brake. When you are struggling to solve a dilemma and a friend, relative, acquaintance, stranger, or other source unwittingly gives you the advice you need to hear to solve it, I am directing that scene. Those cute animals with big sad eyes? I manipulate them so you will do the right thing. I have no true physical form, taking on whatever form is needed to lead people down the right path. Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: Master VorNach on August 10, 2013, 05:13:58 AM I had a flurry of inspiration the other day.
These are just rough concepts and I may not take any of them any further. If anyone is inspired by any of these then please, run with it. Pollution elemental - Appears as a roiling grey/black cloud filled with debris. Has a high degree of control over his density and in the right environment can blend into the surroundings, looking like a cloud of exhaust, an oily puddle, a smear of accreted residue. Can envelope/project areas of toxic/suffocating gasses. Can cause accelerated oxidation in various minerals. Can obscure large areas in thick, foul smelling, damp, particulate filled clouds. City elemental - Appears as an unremarkable person in a Department of Public Works uniform or as a colossal embodiment of the city itself; a towering edifice of skyscraper, suspension bridge, rail lines, cables, conduits, cars, trucks, asphalt. Embodies the facets and attributes of the modern metropolis. Is able to merge with the physical infrastructure, existing in and traveling through it unnoticed. Is able to extend a sense of awareness through the structure of the city. Can be aware of the general moods and emotional state of the city’s inhabitants. Network elemental – Appears within the ‘net as any type of avatar she would like to. Merges with the network, existing within it; traveling where ever it can go, perceiving through anything connected and communicating wherever there’s an output. Gets unlimited, free long distance calling. Can control any connected device, access any data. Light elemental – Appears as a humanoid silhouette or simply an undefined glow. Can travel at the speed of light. Is able to project light in all its’ forms, from a soft, gentle glow to a focused penetrating beam to a burst of blinding incandescence. Can manipulate the flow of light in an area, bending and redirecting it to suit itself. Sound elemental – Appears blurred out, present but indistinct. Is able to control the manifestation of sound; increasing and decreasing volume, pitch, changing wavelengths, capable of perfect mimicry, can perceive things via sonar, aware of the innate harmonics of objects and can generate and control harmonic vibrations. Is able to pass through solid objects, though the denser the object the longer it takes. Gravity elemental – Appears as a humanoid outline with a small debris cloud orbiting his form. Controls gravity; stronger, weaker, changes its direction, etc. This one is pretty straight forward. Decided to get a little silly here: Hair elemental – Appears as a person with hair so awesome that it always looks perfect for the situation. Controls hair; can make it grow, fall out, change its color, texture and style. This works on anything that has hair and on any hair; head, ears, nose, back, anywhere....! These next two are getting outside the range of “elemental” but I liked the ideas so here they are for conversation sake. Space elemental (not outer space but space, a volume, an area)- Appears as a normal person but they are indistinct, as if too far away to make out definitive features. Can teleport, use apportation (teleporting other things). Can perceive regardless of distance. Can manipulate distance, making things closer or further. Can “maroon” someone by never allowing them to reach any destination and preventing anyone from ever reaching them, even if in the same room. Has deep pockets (literally, like having space inside a TARDIS). Time elemental - Can appear any age/many ages. Change the flow of time; faster, slower, backing it up. Can lock people/areas in stasis or place them out of synch with the regular flow of time. Has precognition and retro-cognition. If you consider allowing this entity to use time travel then think about past events being locked in place, they’ve happened and cannot be changed, no grandmother paradoxes. Options for future events become more splintered the further into the future they are. Another idea is instead of time travel this being is simply aware of it's entire timeline of existence. Think Dr Manhattan from Watchmen. Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? If anyone is inspired by any of these then please, run with it. Pollution elemental City elemental Network elemental Light elemental Sound elemental Gravity elemental Hair elemental Space elemental Time elemental Good stuff indeed! I had been mulling over a couple myself...the core of the question I tend to see as more fundamental...with actual elements...fire, earth, air, water, metal...specific elements as per the periodic table...but I also like to play with the box as I look outside of it. Trash/garbage elemental...as a character I could see this one as a cloner...making copies of its human form (identical) in a classic mundane hobo with a shopping cart, pushing it through the city collecting the throw offs of society one bit at a time...when he needs to act his clones fall away into equal volume/mass of random garbage and forms as a massive flowing humanish shape to the point drawing its focused attention... (http://www.johnhscott.net/portfolio/TrashMonster.jpg) This could be a fun one as a benign protector of the inner city...leaving collectable toys/items found within the daily garbage for the orphans, homeless children, and others in need to cash in for a better life...reclaiming tools and related items for the same in stress adults to use for work or sale...as a creature that never sleeps, able to spread itself into many clones, constantly searching through the easy to access as well as the deep mounds of garbage it could find items that have significant value, especially when collected together like precious metals, jewelry, gem stones, etc. I could see this character as a fairly emotionless modern man made force of nature with a driven to collect and recycle...in the end leaving neat spheres of like materials...compressed paper, cloth, wire, glass, plastic, etc. the organic materials being compressed into balls of pure fertilizer. The despair and anguish of those in pain of need, those mentioned before, would draw its attention and give direction until the moment had passed...a child crying in the shadow of building because they are hungry and cold...a quiet raggedy man pushing a shopping cart comes into view and gives the child a collectable lunch box filled with treasures...an old GI Joe, a diamond ring, a rolex watch, a roll of random paper currency, and lots of coins...and just as silently and quickly the raggedy man is gone. :) For comicbook context, this character would react to evil just as it does to a child's hunger...a flowing wave of garbage enveloping a rapist before he can complete his intended action, the foul desire drawing the elemental in like a beacon, smothering the criminal unconscious and depositing him on a well lit street corner...covered in the less appealing aspects of what can be found within garbage...a slime of stink...marking the evil doer for others to find and know why he was left behind. A supervillain fighting superheroes would draw the elemental in and cause it to act, not so much as being part of the team but because the bad guy radiated active evil. :D Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Post by: Master VorNach on August 14, 2013, 08:07:11 AM I had been mulling over a couple myself...the core of the question I tend to see as more fundamental...with actual elements...fire, earth, air, water, metal...specific elements as per the periodic table...but I also like to play with the box as I look outside of it. The thread seems to have gone somewhat sideways into more conceptual/archetypal concepts than pure elements. Very cool concepts. That would make for a fascinating story/comic.This could be a fun one as a benign protector of the inner city...leaving collectable toys/items found within the daily garbage for the orphans, homeless children, and others in need to cash in for a better life... Can vary her density from a fine granular powder to a solid crystal. No walking through walls but flowing under doors or through other small openings is viable. Can manipulate sale in the environment, for instance: Make salt water into fresh and the reverse. Breakdown salt into it's component chemicals: sodium and chloride (fun with chemistry). Manipulate salt in living beings generating variety of effects including dizziness, cramping, neurological disruption or death. Absorb salt from the environment to temporarily increase mass/volume. Can make plain foods more palatable. Can preserve some foods for long periods of time, though they don't taste as good any more. Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? Clever and interesting as salt is so very important to all living things in measure. Good times :D Title: Re: What sort of elemental would you be? these have all been excellent good news is, I feel that "bending" still definitely fits since it follows the same basic themes and principles. I'd be an earthbender for sure... I have "stubbornness issues" lol (http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/094/8/9/earth_bender_by_yagamii-d3d9ah1.jpg) did I mention I look most excellent in Earth tones? :D |
