Title: A Color A Day - Lee Filters
Post by: Kyaryo Ysoyav on August 08, 2013, 05:14:58 AM
I know that many others have done similar examples of their favorite Lee filters with the AS MLS units, however, not too many (or any?) of them posted the full range of colors and the names of the filters for those who are just starting out.

I wanted to show the full range of colors and to give the names of the filters both for those who already have them and for those who are contemplating color filters instead of a single color blade.  However, there are so many that it would take months to photograph and label them all; so I thought, why not do it like a page-a-day calendar.  Perhaps when it's finished I could compile it all together by color, but for now it will be random, and thus,  perhaps, a little more fun.  I suppose I might take recommendations, too...

I will post one picture in full light, and one in complete darkness.  All photos are taken for the color of the blade, and I found the best representation I can get is with auto focus and HDR settings on my iPhone5.  It gets REALLY close to the actual color, especially if you look at the light splotch on the back wall.

Finally, please note that my saber is TWO white LEDs, and not a single MLS unit, so there may be some minor illumination discrepancies, but 1+1 != 2 with brightness, it is closer than you might think.

JADE

This is one of my favorites and a great cyan.

I don't think is a fully dark...I may retake and edit.

Great idea. Point.  If/when I get an AS I could chip in.

I also like Jade. Peacock Blue is a nice cyan as well.

Just Blue

This is a very nice deep blue. It can be a little dark in direct light, but it's not bad at all. One of my favorites.

If I might ask, how are you cutting your filters? I have a 1" punch but it doesn't seem to do a great job (bends the film more than cuts). Just curious.

I just take a color disc and put filter on filter and cut around ... If you don't have color discs take cardboard or heavy paper and cut match the blade then use that as your stencil.

I use a 1" punch as well, it's not perfect, but I typically do one cut, then rotate 90 degrees and cut again.  That usually gets me a mostly round filter.  The edges aren't all that important anyways, at least not with the heat sink I have.

glad to know I'm not the only one who has trouble cutting them with the 1" punch.  I thought the punch I bought was just a piece of junk.

A very, very bright neon pink. If I ever used a pink saber, it'd be this one. Get the bad guy confused for sure.

Cold Lavender

How's this for a deep purple?  It is a very purple purple, but not dark enough to significantly reduce the brightness of the blade.

Very nice. When I get my Silver MLS I'll definitely have to try this filter out.  Do you use 1 or 2 filters?  Also, is the 2 White LEDs a custom US thing or is it your own custom work?

Title: Re: A Color A Day - Lee Filters
Post by: Kyaryo Ysoyav on August 15, 2013, 10:57:49 AM
I use one filter.  The two White LEDs is custom work.  I don't think it's actually that much brighter than a single.  Maybe I'll do a side-by-side shot of the same color one time and see.

Sadly, the actual color is yellow.  I figured out how to undo the greening that happened when I took the photo, though I can certainly look for a lime green to actually match that picture.  I'll have to redo that picture.

This is an extremely faint blue that adds a silver hue to a saber.  Please note that my battery was almost dead, so this color is quite a bit brighter than it appears.

Unfortunately italian lee dealers don't offer the swatch book and lee filter usa don't ship in europe... I think i'll use the filters i ordered from US to experiment on my (colored) leds until i find a way to get them!
By the way, the second, warmer yellow is amazing!

Also, you could've meant the actual Lee Filter color "Lime Green" just in case that is true:

BONUS COLOR

LIME GREEN

The dark picture is really bright because I had to keep my camera from resetting the white balance in the dark.

MALLARD GREEN

This is definitely my new favorite.  It is a darker color, but only really has problems when you get a lot of glare on the blade...there must be a way to fix that (other than turning off the lights).  I imagine it must either be close to Emerald green or SRD (my money's on the former).

DEEP PURPLE

Every now and then you hit a saber color so cool that it just blows your poor camera's mind.  Sadly, that also makes it difficult to photograph.  This is the darkest, purest purple in the Lee Filter book.  It is not that dark of a blade, though and is a very cool, almost black light purple. (I will have to dig out a picture of my wife's saber when it was still DVA and compare).  The most accurate rendition of the color as it truly appears is in the dark purples outside of the pinkish "glare" in the dark photo.  I really like this color, if I can ever get a better shot of it, I will repost.

Point to you for posting all these cool filters.

It wouldn't be a problem if I started a thread for Rosco filters would it?  I don't want to step on anybodies toes by starting one.

That is a nice looking purple, I bet it looks really great in person.  I especially like the steel blue.
Point to you for posting all these cool filters.

It wouldn't be a problem if I started a thread for Rosco filters would it?  I don't want to step on anybodies toes by starting one.

Thanks!  It has been a very fun project!

I wouldn't mind at all, I started this just so those considering the white LED with color filters option could get a realistic view of the pros and cons of it.  I would love to try out Rosco filters, but I'm in Taiwan now and shipping would be rough.  It would be cool to see you post them and check out the differences!

Feel free to even use the "color a day" title if you should so wish.   :D

The color a day wouldn't work for me.  It will be more like "a color whenever I feel like it".   ;D
Although I do already have several done.

Haha!  I take the pictures when I feel like it, but I just take like 4 or 5 at once.  I will be watching for your posts!

Peacock and True Blue has always been my favorites. For greens I like Jas, Fern, and Moss Green. Mostly Jas though. Its cool and unique shade of green.
