Title: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: Ultra on August 10, 2011, 03:46:44 AM Fellow saber enthusiasts, as you have probably noticed, this forum is seeing some pretty amazing growth and will quickly become the #1 Lightsaber forum on the net. This forum is becoming so popular because of all of YOU. You make this forum such a great and friendly place and people want to stick around and become part of this special little community. We're not going to be a little community for long, and growth is good, but it also means we'll get alot of new people here who may not have much experience with posting on a forum.
Many of you already have a good grasp of forum etiquette (Netiquette, as it is sometimes called), but many will not. It is incumbent upon us all to educate the new comers with courtesy and respect. Example, if someone posts a question that has been asked a hundred times before, certainly feel free to inform the poster about the search function - but at the same time, maybe also answer the question? If the question is too involved for a quick answer, simply say so, like: "This is a pretty complex topic that has been discussed at great length and can't really be explained in one post. You can find threads about it with the Search Function" If all you're going to do is write "Use the search feature", then I'd prefer you not reply at all since it comes across as unfriendly even when you're not trying to be. There are other breaches in Netiquette that can be handled in an equally friendly manner, like typing in all caps, making multiple posts, making the same thread in different forums, etc. I urge us all to have patience while we grow in popularity and make all the new comers feel welcome. Lastly, from all of us at the Saber Forum Staff, thanks for being such a great group of people. You've turned what started out as a little forum about Ultra Sabers into a thriving community that discusses everything from Martial Arts to Video Games. Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: Sub-Zero on August 10, 2011, 03:58:22 AM I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm always happy to point the way.
Glad that the famly is getting bigger. Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: Sephradragon on August 10, 2011, 04:05:37 AM "teach our young padawans we must, mmmmm yes" I am just Glad we have such a great group of masters and elderstaff who can answer a lot of the questions. So Ultra, Deep, and the rest don't get too overloaded. Or at least they can point everybody in the right direction until The guys from US can give them the info directly.
Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: Master Nero Attoru on August 10, 2011, 04:20:33 AM Heard and understood Ultra. I like to point people towards the search function more when there's much for them to gain by it - some topics have some really good material that you can find just by doing a basic search. I'm always willing to share (even repeatedly) my knowledge - the way I see it, not everyone is as nerdy as I am ;). I always try to be courteous and patient, and will continue to do so in the future.

There's a lightsaber forum or two out there that can be... well, shall we say, a tad unfriendly to anyone except their regulars. As someone who is new to the hobby, it's frustrating to visit places like that, which are completely overflowing with people with years of experience and who can give some marvelous advice... just to get slapped down, often by a GROUCHY moderator, who is incredibly uncooperative and unfriendly. I would name names but she probably lurks around this forum too (like Jaws, waiting to bite your feet off). Oh, and as a business, it's really in Ultrasabers best interest to be NICE to its fans and to have fans be nice to each other. We're in a recession, money is tight and Lightsabers aren't a necessity of life (though I might disagree with that part sometimes...). Ultrasabers is by far the best option, but there ARE other options. Pissing someone off or being rude can very easily drive them off or turn them away from the product entirely. WE are the faces of Ultrasabers and it's up to us to build up its good name and keep it there. The quality of the sabers themselves are obviously top notch and you can't beat the prices, but who wants to buy something from a jerk? Keep it clean. Keep it nice. Try to make everyone happy. I'm glad I joined this forum. Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: SithLord on June 07, 2012, 05:05:08 AM This is a great thread. I totally agree. Other nonrelated forums can show such hostility and unfriendliness with regard to this. A friendly reminder and a quick point in the right direction takes less time than to belittle someone and come across as rude and a snob.
This is my first post... I am a noob, althought I do own 5 FX sabers. Happy to be here. I'll try hard to use the search feature! : ) Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: Master Nero Attoru on June 07, 2012, 01:02:21 PM This is a great thread. Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: Darth Munt on July 31, 2012, 08:19:56 AM I dont know how it is in the forum because I have not used it enough yet.
However, I have used A LOT of forums for many years. Telling someone to "use the search function" is usually accompanied with some kind of sarcastic remark or snide implication in my experience. This is not helpful and can reflect badly on the forum itself, hence the Rule #1 that most forums, including this one, has. Sometimes it is also not helpful for other reasons. As I have said I have used forums a lot and sometimes the search function is less than adequate. This leads to people searching and not finding what they are looking for even if the subject may have been discussed before. If you can type the lines "Why dont you use the search engine, thats what it is there for. Why else would there be a search function" When it is just as easy to type "there is a thread called "this is the thread title" if you type that you should find what you are looking for" The latter suggestion makes a HUGE difference to your own reputation and the reputation of the forum. Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: The Monkey King on November 01, 2012, 08:48:06 PM Hello, I'm new here as well and don't really find the "search" all that helpful. For Example, I'm trying to post a pic attachment to show a fellow member something, I don't know how to do this, so I go to "search" to try and learn how. But, I get a vague answer " Click on the Modify Button " but if you don't were to find the modify button it's useless info. And I find that is the case with a lot of topics, instructions are useless if they're not concise. Just like with building cars or lightsabers, it's the little details that make the most impact. And I still can't find the modify button.
Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: Luna on November 01, 2012, 11:58:27 PM The modify button is used to modify a message that you've already posted within a certain time limit. It will be in the upper right of your posts.
To post pics, you upload the image to Photobucket (or some other sites, but I've never used any others) and copy-paste the IMG code (from the 'share media' option). Title: Re: Telling people to use the search function and other stuff Post by: Abraxus on November 02, 2012, 04:01:23 PM My experience on this forum has always been positive, and anytime I have asked questions, I have always received prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable responses. I am always happy to do the same for our newer members when I can. I want to see this place grow to become the premier site for all things Star Wars, light saber, and anything remotely related (or in some cases, not even related).
I have belonged to some online communities that were not so accommodating. So, I appreciate the great place we have all made for ourselves here. Sometimes I search and I'm confident what I want is on the forum, I just can't find it in the plethora of results. If you tell someone to search, perhaps suggest a search string. Or if you KNOW which board contains their answer, direct them to that board. Or if you KNOW which user posted their answer, tell them which user. I was just going to say that it is possible that some people don't realize you can do a search. I like to ask questions in order to start conversation and lively discussion. It would be a very short and boring conversation if all I ever heard was "search for it". I like helping others and discussing various topics, so I only tell people to look something up after at least trying to help. Maybe thats why I was told I am Guardian blue when taking the "what color blade are you" questionnaire. Works for me cuz thats my favoite color anyway. The search tool sometimes reminds me of loading screens on home/video computer games from many, many years ago. But still sort of Works & possibly quicker than waiting for another human being to diseminate the info. Of course I reserve the right to be completely wrong.I like to ask questions in order to start conversation and lively discussion. as a company there's no money to be made from this forum. they did it because they are fans as well. the community build here giving us a chance to find others around us, places to find combat classes, costumes, you name it. these guys do what they do because they enjoy it as much as we do. I saw the other guys raffle and they gave away 1 saber. US pulls a raffle and ends up as "what the heck, here's 5 more winners than we announced!" I can imagine Ultra and Deep saying "ok crew, drawing raffle winners tonight, so pizza and soda on us."
