Title: Close Quarters Dueling
Post by: Master Lucien Kane on September 26, 2011, 04:10:56 PM
Here's a video of me dueling in an area where footwork is limited. The first half is just showcasing different techniques you can use in close quarters... some of them are obviously not techniques you want to use full speed on a friend... I.E. Bucking and foot sweeping. The second half of the video is the dueling, we throw the foam on the blades and go at it, and I showcase some of the techniques.

Thanks, I had someone request it on another forum so I figured I'd post it here as well.

If I may,

Try using an initiate and close the distance quickly.

I know you lose a lot of reach but (For Me) I like how easy it is to move it around when I am close to someone.

I also notice that in general when someone gets close, pushing in on you, (You as in - People in general) lock up, They bring the blade close to their body and then stop moving.

Hope that made sense lol.

That's definitely the philosophy behind a lot of Samurai doctrines and the reason they carried a Katana and a Wakizashi... I like the 30'' blade, it really lends well to my style, and it makes me come in closer on my friends who use 35'' blades. It would be interesting to try the initiate blades in close though....

I've had fights on a 10'x10' concrete slab where we were allowed a 24 inch max on the blade, grabs on the blade were legal, and only a shot to the body or removal from the slab scored a point. We went to seven and I found that I was the quickest of us at getting in a jab without getting caught. Those were funny, if a touch brutal...

lol that's awesome! and brutal can be fun if all participants are cool with it. Some of my friends are mad if they don't go home with welts and bruises, and some of them are ingenious like my buddy who came up with the foam over the blades.

None of it is wrong... it's just knowing your limitations, listening to your sparring partner, and not being too crazy.

but yeah that sounds like a blast!

Yeah, that setup wasn't for everyone and indeed a person or two saw it and said no. We had a 260ish fella and 300 plus guy on the slab and it was borderline apocalyptic.

Sounds like my specialty.

FYI....

When it comes to saberplay, the last thing we want to do on this forum is encourage overly rough and tumble training. Keep in mind that we have some younger folks on here and we don't want to influence them to get too crazy just because certain members think it's cool...that is where lawsuits come in. Parents like to blame places like websites and forums if their kids get hurt, etc. because they are easy targets.

Let's not go too far with this.

Understood, even some of my videos that I post I like to put the disclaimer that I'm an idiot, and that no one should duel without proper protection. However I am a consenting adult, and so are my friends, so when we beat the mess out of each other its completely within our realms as adults.

I've very specifically told my nephews that it will be YEARS before they get to beat and bang like that.

You are missing the point.

Consenting or not, my point is that younger kids who are easily influenced will see the vids and think it's OK.

There isn't an argument or discussion here. These are the rules of the forum per Ultra (he owns this site, remember?) and it is how it is.

Proceed with caution on future posts.

Roger that, I wasn't aware that my video was on the fringe of being inappropriate. I'll be more careful in the future, and I meant no disrespect, I wasn't aware that talking about our experiences was also breaking the rules. I apologize if I seemed rude in any way.

Thank you. I know you wouldn't intentionally post anything to be rude, etc.

Anyways, on with the discussions... :)

Thank you for sharing the video, but do you have a version where there isn't any music? I would very much like to hear the discussion.

Thank you,
