Title: Espada y Daga
Post by: imperialknight23 on September 29, 2011, 07:11:31 PM
We have all heard of escrima, but have you heard of Espada y Daga.  This is another fighting system derived from the Philippines.

I noticed Master Caine is a filipino weapons expert and wondered if this fighting style can be adapted to lightsaber combat such as dual wielding a shoto and full size saber.  or 2 shotos, or a shoto and an even smaller blade.

For those unfamiliar, Espada Y Daga is a filipino martial art using a sword(espada) and knife/dagger (daga) simultaneously.
The principle is to be able to be effective at mid and close range with the varying lengths of weapons.

Very cool idea.  I hope he does come up with something for this, I'd love to see it!  I've been thinking of using a cut down Initiate blade as an off hand, for a sort of sword and dagger approach.  This kind of thing would be quite instructional along those lines.

look up some vids on youtube.  at first the way it is executed might look not very lightsaber like, but would still be a very cool concept.  It's the style i'll try to go for when i get my next initiate.  although i think a 24inch blade is much too long to consider a dagger.

I've actually cut down a blade before to play with long dagger styles. It has ups and downs, but its hot if you want to close in to bad breath range. I was using an 18 incher with a 32ish main last time I messed with it, but I was actually outside with a hacksaw just now cutting on a blade that one of those barbarian woodcutters broke years ago (he is no longer welcome around these parts since he was trying to break my stuff out of spite) and I'm about to start messing with them again. I'm kinda looking to go in the 10 to 14 inch range this time.

Yes! Most of the veterans in NY Jedi were taught by Scott Ferrara, an eskrimador who also teaches Espada y Daga. It's one of the basis for alot of the Jar'Kai (Star Wars slang for using two weapons) that we have at the moment.

One of my first tutorials was using an Ultra  Initiate and an Eskrima stick.  ;)

if it helps, extant examples of renaissance off-hand daggers used in conjunction with a rapier were anywhere from 8 inches to 17 inches in blade length.:)

I got one on either end of that range that I'm messing with. It changes the style a bit depending on the length of both the dagger and the primary, I find... oops, posted on my girlfriend's login. Bad Jammo...

This is Jammo with a dagger sans tip. Its about 10 inches, but I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't taken an exact measurement.

Nice aura around the dagger!  Does the blade tend to be brighter being that it is shorter?

Even without a reflective tip the shorter it is the less space the LED has to light.  Imagine how bright it would be with a tip on that thing!  Very impressive indeed.

Cheers.

I think it unsafe to use until I get a tip on it. Once I got it, its on...

I agree, when I dual wield I only use initiates, mainly because of my height BUT, It is very very fast a maneuverable. ;D

So... I lost a tip off of my Aeon scoring a battery side hit on my brother. This did leave me with an opportunity to do this before I have the blades complete...

@Jammo, that 10incher is the perfect size for this kinda fighting style.  even the 18 incher is perfect for the "sword" hand.

Very nice, I prefer the normal initiates.

But that knife looks really neat. ;D

I am SO happy that more people are starting to like shorter blades!

SMiley time! ;D ;D ;D

And yes I like it!

I like ALL lengths, man! I just happen to dig this dagger thing, particularly since I've always favored shorties in the off-hand.

the 32 inch blades have been growing on me...and i'm thinking a heavy bag, some dual wield routines, and a couple initiates are just what the med droid ordered some nights...or a 32, an 18, and Niten-ryū kata.

Despite my apparent excitement...

I must share the sobering news that I can't parry squat with that ten incher. Perhaps I need to leave the REALLY short one for show and stick to a 14-18 inch off-hand blade with something 6-8 inches longer than the off-hand blade in my main.
