Title: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: mchalk13 on October 03, 2016, 08:39:38 PM Hey all I recently got a dominix V3 as a grab bag saber and I am now in the process of converting it over to look similar to the Kota hilt we all are familiar with, I used a dremel and hack saw (the dremel was going to slowly) to remove a portion of the emitter to about the appropriate angle then used a belt sander to sand it smooth. After that I put 3 coats of self etching primer on it all around. Next up will be 3 coats of flat black followed by 3 coats each of pyrite mica (a bronze color) and metallic black. I will sand it all to give it a weathered appearance and then wrap the hilt in leather using Bulvoy's method. After it is all said and done I will post pictures of the completed project. This will be my first saber customization and is paving the way of knowledge about this practice so I can then customize my Prophecy which will hopefully look like it was carved from bone. Thank you to EVERYONE in this wonderful community for supplying the knowledge on saber customization it has helped me immensely thus far.

Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: scifidude79 on October 04, 2016, 01:25:29 PM Sweet, thanks for posting pics. It's looking great so far. Have a point. :)
I was wondering how the slant cut would look with the grooves the V3 has in the emitter. Not bad at all. Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: mchalk13 on October 04, 2016, 04:49:59 PM All painting done, now just weathering it back down.

Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: mchalk13 on October 06, 2016, 04:52:00 PM Question for those that are kinda following this, When I finish this product (should be this weekend) should I post the pics in this thread or make a new one? I don't want to break any rules or annoy anyone so thank you for letting me know.
Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: Corwyn VonBeck on October 06, 2016, 05:00:34 PM For me, I would keep it all in this thread, so people get to see the progress from start to finish. Only reason I would see for starting a new thread would be to bring all your step by step posts into a single post rather than having to read through all the ongoing comments, but the discussion as you progress can help people understand the process a little better. Just my opinion.
Nice work so far! +1 Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: scifidude79 on October 06, 2016, 05:22:54 PM I agree about keeping it in this thread. People definitely like seeing how it progressed. :)

Everything looks good so far and we look forward to the finished product. Please provide as many pics and written details about how you completed this saber as you need. For most of us saber enthusiasts there is no such thing as too much information and sharing. ;D

Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: mchalk13 on October 08, 2016, 03:27:48 PM I decided to add some heavy battle damage so here it is after I saved all the paint off I used a dremel and added what you now see

Ladies and gentlemen of the ultrasabers community behold I give to you the Domi Kota. I started with a Dominix V3 cut the emitter off at an angle, sanded it all down, then added the damage you see on the emmiter and the blast hole you see in it. After that I applied a self etching primmer followed by 3 coats of each of the following in that order, Magnetic Grey Metallic, Pyrite Mica, and Ultra Flat Black. I then sanded it off slowly to cause the weathering effect you see here, then applied 8 coats of lusterless clear coat. Following that I got the leather you see and some marine epoxy and set out to wrap the hilt. All in all I am stupidly pleased with this project and seeing as how this was my first saber customization I think it went very well, I did learn a few things and greatly appreciate all that the forums have taught me. Next up will be the "Krayt's Maw" A prophecy that will look as though it has been carved from the tooth of a Krayt Dragon. Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: SaberoftheJedi on October 11, 2016, 10:47:48 PM Huh. Very complicated process :D
Anyway, I love love love it. I'm a sucker for leather wraps :P + 1 Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: scifidude79 on October 12, 2016, 04:27:46 AM Somebody needs to tell Rahm Kota to catch those blaster bolts with the blade, not the emitter. :P
Seriously, this is wonderful. Great job on the whole thing. It looks fantastic. ;D Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: RevanReborn on October 12, 2016, 06:10:57 AM WOW DUDE!! Just- WOW! I leave for a couple days, check back and THIS is what I missed lol?! Stunning work all around man, absolutely gorgeous! Amazing job bringing that saber to life :). I can only imagine how proud you must be, rightfully so. Awesome picks and process too- I love build logs! And the more pics the better for sure :). I've got a long list of people being point bombed ATM, but you're def added to it lol.
Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: Rapine on October 12, 2016, 10:26:50 AM That looks spectacular mchalk13!
Really nicely done. I like the blaster damage. :) -1 Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: mchalk13 on October 12, 2016, 07:10:13 PM Thank you all for the compliments I really appreciate it. This was with out a doubt one of the most fun projects I have worked on in some time. Fifteen years ago I painted a Necron army for Warhammer 40k and that task there is what made this process easier. The next stage for this saber will be an entire new electronics set up as it is currently just a stunt saber. As most of the parts I will be using come from "the other guys" (not a saber manufacturer but instead a parts company) I don't know if I can divulge to much information on that part of the process. but when it is 100% done there will be a full video to accompany it. I look forward to posting that for y'all.
Thanks again, Matt Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: Exilium on October 12, 2016, 08:14:50 PM That is one beautiful custom saber! Kota would be proud.

Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: Dauntless Seven on October 22, 2016, 07:22:23 PM Wow ! Love everything you have done with this Kota. The distressing of the leather wrap really completes the worn and battle used look. May have to borrow your customization for a spare Dom v3 but unfortunately it is an LE and I find those silver grooves a challenge. Guess not if I paint the whole saber. :-\
much deserved point 8) Title: Re: Dominix V3 to my interpitation of the Kota Post by: mchalk13 on October 28, 2016, 09:38:53 PM Thank you D7, The distressing of the leather was 100% by accident but I am happy it worked out the way it did. As for you project with your Domi, no if you painted the entire hilt similar to how I did, it would not matter with those silver rings.
