Title: taunting
Post by: Jammo on February 09, 2011, 07:18:57 AM
Does anyone else run your mouth a lot when you duel? I find its pretty effective at disrupting your opponent's general rhythm. Thoughts?

Interesting thought. Personally i tend to not talk at all (or very little) whenever i duel. I'll have to try it and see how it works

In SW what you describe is called Dun Moch

Its effective for basically anything involving competition. Trash talk is huge in sports. Quite often if flusters the opponent and throws them off their game completely if you can get under their skin with the right words.

I find its even useful for me because it loosens me up. Concentrating too much closes my mind up for whatever reason and running my jibbs leaves me fluid in addition to bugging the crap out of certain opponents. There's a dirty Sith that doesn't come around anymore that I could count on getting to over commit with a minute or two of prancing around and talking smack. Even the guy that claims to be least effected by it is easier to get in on when I throw moves that don't match the pace of my voice. Its almost like I'm trying to lull him to sleep and then hit him fast.

Me and my old dueling partner used to talk a little smack, though usually we just talked about the fight. We'd run our mouths for the whole duel, just critiqueing ourselves and each other. lol Made it interesting, for sure.

It worked for Obi Wan:

I Have the High Ground! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H3o8r7JgGY#)

You are right Ultra...basically he was appealing to Ani's arrogance; DARING the 'Chosen One' to try something anyone else would know better than but which Obi knew Ani couldnt resist because believing in himself as 'spesh-shul'  the normal 'rules' for anyone else would apply to the Chosen One...he'd have to take that dare...

...but what if he hadn't, what if he'd guided his platform 20 yards up or downstream and stepped off then rushed Obi on land hmmm?

Obi was depending on Dun Moch working to win the battle...if it had backfired things could have been very different eh?

Yeah, sometimes.  M e and my training partner talk constantly when we're working.  Not so much when I duel with other people though.  Maybe I oughta try it more.

Kenobi was in a superior tactical position either way. Vader (since he was Vader at that point) moves and he shadows him. At that point it became about position. Kenobi had it and Vader was going to have to fight a smarter fight than he was capable of to win. Kenobi applied BOTH Dun Moch and Sokan flawlessly.

I would have used lightsaber throw. That'll teach him!

I've insulted Darth Invisible Guy, quite often. He doesn't like it.

Im always finding myself teaching someone or working on perfecting moves, so talking is something I do a lot. In a real duel, I usually try to have fun with it. I enjoy it. So you will see me crack a smile and start laughing once in a while. Taunting I think can be healthy amongst duelers. Especially common sparring buddies. True, you are getting better and noticing your flaws, but you cant take things too serious, in my own opinion. Its that sense of enjoyment and respect for the duel as well as for the other person I think. Taunting itself, well, you could do that. But personally I think I would find myself just having too much fun with it. The whole "Yo mamma thought Jar-Jar came with pickles-pickles" thing, not really my style all the time.

During the main part of the duel, I usually don't say very much. However, I almost always start the duel with an unexpected lunge to the chest and I say:

(In Chad Vader voice): See? You're not expecting the unexpected enough! :D

When I'm "dueling" my daughter or my youngest son (using his store-bought plastic flashlight sabers) I don't do a lot of taunting.

When dueling my oldest son (he's 16) I DEFINITELY taunt him.  He taunts me back too, but I'm not as succeptable to it.  I mess with him pretty hard.  It's gonna be fun when we get our Ultra Sabers.  He and I are gonna have some epic battles.

Whenever you fight a Vader, just ask him how the wife and kids are....Hah, my friend used to dress up as Mace. Think he still does. Anyway, I would usally laugh at him for falling out a window and getting his arm cut off by and elderly man and a brat.

I'd have to say Dooku had some of the best taunts. "Master Kenobi, you dissappoint me, Yoda always held you in such high esteem, surely you can do better. and "My jedi skills have become greater than any other, even you" (said to yoda) Those have always been my favourites. And even non verbal taunts like Darth Maul to Obi-wan right after killing Qui-gon.

Word. xD

Nah, I'm not one for taunting.  When I'm using Makashi I'm too busy scurrying away and when I'm using Djem So I'm too busy smashing things.  I can see it being really useful for a Soresu user, though.

QFT.

I don't trash talk or goad my opponents. It's just not in me. But I will laugh a lot while I'm dueling just because I'm enjoying it. I've been told that it's very irritating and very unnerving.

Yeah, laughing can be a nasty one.  A lot of the best taunts are all non-verbal or body language.  It can really mess an opponent up.

Taunting can be pretty effective, if you can manage it.  The problem is taunting can bring your focus off your technique which could give your opponent an opening, but I'm sure there are people who are good enough multi-taskers to pull it off.

Or, alternatively, if you have enough practice on the technique and the movements it works.  If you're struggling to keep up with your opponent, taking your focus off to goad them is probably going to get you Darth Maul-ed.

Now that's not really fair. He did get rid of ONE of the lightsabers, he just didn't plan for him using Qui-gons.

Although why he didn't just get down on his knees and poke Obi-wan through the face with his lightsaber I still don't know.

Lightning might have been safer...if he'd been kneeling at the platform Obi-Wan could have just force-pulled him over the ledge.

Vader also demonstrated well in Episode VI why taunting an opponent isn't always a good idea...xD

Oh man what a great part lol.  I love that movie, and that part is one of my favorite moments in it.  It's one of those times when you realize that you REALLY shouldn't threaten the loved ones of the nice guy... especially if that nice guy has been training hardcore to kill Vader and has some dark side tendencies to begin with.

I've always thought that was the most emotionally-charged duel in any of the films.  Yeah, ROTS duels were well choreographed and artfully done, but there was a lot of spirit in the ROTJ fight.

Anyway, I'm getting off-track. xD

It depends STRONGLY on your opponent. I can get away with trash talking on people I know are...how should I put this...attention deficient. Against someone who knows their crap, I've got to either stop doing it all together or get completely nasty on them.

Taunting is a tool, and like all tools has it's usefulness in the right situations and in the wrong situations.
