Title: Want to verify before I proceed...
Post by: Darth Karhu on April 04, 2012, 06:39:58 AM
Long story short, I'm making a saber for a friend who wants it for cosplay based on their RPG character.
For this characters saber, there is no power switch, it is activated telekinetically, and has a perfectly smooth surface. I already know what parts I'm ordering to make it, but just to be sure, I want to verify...If I wire the saber (I'll be using a puck) with no switch, it will be constantly on as long as there is juice in the battery...however, if I wire it for an in-hilt charge system, can I use a kill plug to power the saber off, and have it shut off when I plug it in to charge?
I'm fairly sure it will work, but I wanted a second opinion before I proceeded.

Thanks in advance.

Or you can modify it to have a Lamp touch switch with contact points that when gripped will cause it to ignite.

More looking at the kill plug idea, simply because a lot of the people around here would be touching the damned thing constantly just because of the novelty of it. I want him to be able to handle it, or have it handled and stay off, until he wants it to come on.
So i take it from your post, that my idea will indeed work?

I seem to have gotten the position of resident tech/builder with my local group (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada), so now I'm starting to branch out into some more creative ideas and approaches...really looking forward to getting this build started, I think it's gonna be pretty cool when its done.

Sorry to threadjack but I was in Halifax on Monday! I live 3 hours away near Barrington Passage.

Is this saber going to be with or without sound? Because some of the custom sabers i've seen will install the switch hidden in the base of the saber if it's without sound so they don't need to drill into their masterpiece.

@ Zivilin Bane- No sound, in fact where the switch normally would go in the config you describe, is where I'm gonna put the recharge plug/kill switch

@ Ben Pass- If you're ever gonna be in Hali on a Wednesday night, bring your saber(s) and join us, just PM me in advance so I can give you our location for that particular week, we'd love to see ya come out.

It'd be a blast, but I normally work Wednesday nights so unless I've got to make a special trip, it won't work out :( if I DO end up coming though, I'll definitely PM you and bring my saber.
