Title: My Lightsaber Origins
Post by: Ronin on February 10, 2011, 05:06:59 AM
Well my little brother got into Star Wars about a year and a half ago, and in the process he got me back into it; him and I like to spar so I figured one day I'd try building a lightsaber out of materials I had laying around, all I could find was a wooden dowel. Anyways I had already planted the idea in his head so I had to build whatever I could, which resulted in these: http://www.truploader.com/uploads/581635IMGP4354.JPG (http://www.truploader.com/uploads/581635IMGP4354.JPG), mine was the one on top, pvc as blades held with screws.

The quality was horrible, and the hole I tapped was off centered and skewed the blade, so I made my way to home depot, bought some pvc parts and built what I could, the blades were threaded to fit the emitter, mine's on top:http://www.truploader.com/uploads/663621IMGP4352.JPG (http://www.truploader.com/uploads/663621IMGP4352.JPG)here it is with the blade out:http://www.truploader.com/uploads/649973IMGP4356.JPG (http://www.truploader.com/uploads/649973IMGP4356.JPG)

The lower one in the first pic was my brother's, it had a twin that connected, but that broke after some combat, and I had to rebuild his lightsabers, this time I used an adapter instead of a threaded pommel: http://www.truploader.com/uploads/438112IMGP4380.JPG (http://www.truploader.com/uploads/438112IMGP4380.JPG) and together: http://www.truploader.com/uploads/750292IMGP4381.JPG (http://www.truploader.com/uploads/750292IMGP4381.JPG)

Then I found Ultrasabers... specifically the metal hilts... amazing...

Very nice attempts there buddy. Hey, we all have our beginnings. I still have the shards of the first bokken I ever had.

The year was 1983. Young Jammo had just seen Return of the Jedi. Upon his arrival at home, he and his brother burned a couple markers completely out coloring a pair of wrapping paper tubes and faced off. The "sabers" both broke on the second clash. Forward to 2005 or so. Same guys, EL sabers, driveway. A whap on the hands and Jammo wins. Its kinda gone from there...

My pvc version is still useable, it just doesn't light up, but that's why I'm against the Ultrasabers PVC hilts, I'm sure they're of a much higher caliber, I just thing a saber should be metal regardless of anything, pvc just can not compare.

@ Jammo: Lol, definitely had my share of smashed knuckles (and knuckle smashings as well)

I agree. PVC works, but the alluminum US hilts are just great. Granted, I still use the PVC hilts for saber training and when my group and I go out, but that is only because we have a lot of kids running around and if something breaks, not too expensive to fix.

True, plus with kids if one of those broken things could be a toe pvc is ideal over metal.

It seems every saber type is a massive jump in quality to the next, wood & tape -> pvc & paint -> hasbro lights & sound -> ultrasabers -> real

whoops, got excited on that last one

Well, that was true for a bit I think, I think they got a little too excited with those things too...anyway! Yeah, we can dream of the next best thing, but US is all ready doing that for us Im sure.

I was searching at the sci-fi section in google search when
I found lightsabers, guess who has his products upfront?

Then I got hooked on the idea of buying one, since I'm "studying"
Wu shu anyway.

So I bought my first saber, kinda in a hurry since I'm leaving Florida
back to my homeland. You can ask Harris that I panicked, that it might
not make it to me in time! (He called by the way, he's cool!)

When I got mine with next day shipping, I was blown away that
I immediately bought my second for my sister!

Thats my story, now I'm having one custom made...
Hope it doesn't brake my wallet...

Nice sabers, given the materials I think you did great!

@jedimasternick: By coincidence... I too have the busted parts of my first bokken. Well, at least some of the parts... XD
