Title: The finer points of spinning (or "It's All In The Wrists") Post by: Hake Felflame on May 23, 2012, 07:21:31 PM I like to think I'm a quick learner when it comes to most things. I'm only a month into my first saber and I'm certainly enjoying it. However, I have no martial arts experience, so weapon training doesn't come naturally to me. I've watched videos of spinning and it seems pretty simple to do, right? Well, maybe. I can do easy spins with my dominant hand, but once my brain says "OK let's try going behind the back now!", my wrists decide to conscientiously object to that directive, and I end up with a blade tip or pommel butt somewhere uncomfortable.
I tried searching through the forum here and haven't quite found what I was looking for. I'm interested in videos or tutorials focusing more on the wrist control aspects of spinning. Doesn't even have to be saber-specific, Videos the masters have posted make it look easy, but it's hard to focus on the hands and wrists to mimic those movements at full speed. Does anyone have any ideas or links to share that could help? Tera Prime will be posting some spinning secrets soon. Couple of days I hope. I will reveal one secret-it's NOT in the wrists-it's in the shoulders. More to come. Really the trick is to start out slow.... slow is smooth smooth is fast. That being said seeing the tricks of the trade can really help. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast haha the days of CQB and the only advice i would have would be let the motions flow smoothly and dont over think it, when i do it i usually end up using my whole body, just because it feels natural.
