Title: Stunt Sabers and Batteries
Post by: Sky Dragon c5 on October 18, 2012, 01:27:20 AM
Do you guys thing a lithium ion setup is worth it in a stunt saber?

I just got it in my Dark Catalyst... it's great!  Consider this - you're gonna make the money up on all those alkalines you don't buy...

Even over normal rechargeables?

Well, Li-Ions are less prone to battery memory - which means they'll do better over time.

And, of course, one can always upgrade to sound at a later point with the Li-Ion setup already done.  Without that being done, the setup of a saber must be stripped out and changed, and that's a very expensive process.

Oh so upgrade my current grab bags would be basically too much work?

Could I use lithium rechargeable batteries in a standard battery setup? Instead of normal NiMH?

It'd be a LOT of cash to do so - I can't give you a precise number.  Deep would be a better source for that info.

And to the second question, I don't know.

I honestly wouldn't buy any that weren't lithium ion, other than an occasional grab bag I may buy down the road.

Lithium lasts longer, and provides a more constant voltage so you won't have flickering or dimming (or if you do it will be minimal) plus leaves you the options of adding sound down the road. Even on my custom build I'm working on now I'm using lithium because of that reason.

Nooooo, whatever you do don't try that.  To give you an idea, NiMH batteries are typically 1.2V each, whereas Li-ion cells are 3.7V each... so you'd be replacing a 4.8V power source with a 7.4V one... not good.  You'd burn your electronics right out most likely.

You just have to make sure the system is set up to receive that much voltage, with the correct resistor or buckpuck, before just trying it out.

And there's the technical answer that I didn't have.

That's the one thing that turns me off from grab bags - the Standard setup. Rechargeables are quite expensive here, and it's way harder to upgrade to sound later.

Everything I've read on this site points to Li-On batteries being far superior in all regards, regardless of your setup.

I prefer Li Ions myself.  Easy to recharge, holds charge more evenly, and the OSB likes them.

The problem is that some areas of the world have environmental restrictions on Li Ion Batteries.  Therefore, you have to look to other sources to prevent having to buy new alkalines all the time.

Thanks for all the info. I have not done voltages and electrical since Junior High School. lol
Guess ill just be using NiMH rechargeables. I wish we could choose to get Lithium on grab bags like choosing blades and led colour.

Well this thread answered my questions about getting a stunt saber then upgrading to sound later! DONT GET THE STANDARD SET UP FOR A STUNT SABER IF YOU PLAN ON GETTING SOUND LATER! lol

Just did a check about Li-On batteries, and the only ban/prohibition I could slice off the net was about the USPS and shipping them internationally. The USPS will mail the batteries internationally if they come installed and/or packaged with a saber. They will not ship a pack of batteries internationally without a saber in the box with it. If someone orders replacement Li-On batteries from Ultrasabers, you're going to have to ship it with someone other than the USPS. This is important to international US customers (clients?) as US has just switched to the USPS to ship orders internationally.

It's dry, but it's in the table at the bottom of the doc.

Canada digs Li-On batteries as I've found out, but if you live outside of North America, Bluespike is right; you should check your local post offices/customs to see if Li-On batteries are indeed shippable.

They use Fedex now though.

I'm tracking my Bellicose on the USPS site as I type this, but FedEx is also an option for International customers. Deep explains it better than me here http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=7385.0 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=7385.0)
