Title: Are you currently playing SWTOR???
Post by: Solinus on November 03, 2012, 03:36:46 AM
I quit playing for a few months due to RL personal issues. But I did reactivate about a month ago. With all of the server mergers, I ended up with all of my characters on The Ebon Hawk server.

Is anyone still playing?

If so, where are you?

Nero, if you see this, is Suns of the Force still active?

Thanks!!

Is it free to play yet? Even if you buy the game itself?

Currently you can play for free up until level 15. You can play as any race, of any class, and view all content on all starter worlds as well as secondary worlds.

The F2P model is set for this month. Many people believe that it will be on Tuesday when patch 1.5 drops. But it has not yet been officially stated when F2P goes live.

Ok I should give it a try now. I shy away from most mmos except F2P and Guild Wars. Free with the game.

I've been playing pretty much consistently since launch (except the last few weeks when I've been obsessing over my latest Ultrasaber purchase!).

I created a guild (The United Jedi Order) a couple of years back when it was all just Forums and RP chat. While the guild survived launch I ended up leaving to play on the Pacific servers since I'm in Aus. At last check I think they moved to the Ebon Hawk but not sure if they're still going.

Now I'm playing on Gav Daragon with a few mates in a guild called Nova Guard.

I'm a bit of an altoholic but have managed to get a Knight/Guardian (Rajen) and Consular/Shadow (Vangaren) up to 50. Working on my Bounty Hunter/Gunslinger chick now (Veracity) who hates the Sith and is all light side.

There are a lot of haters out there for this game which honestly confuses me. I've played a lot of MMO's and, aside from being Star Wars!, this game is as good as anything I've played. Add the Star Wars element and it's just about the best. Given it's been out for less than a year I'd say that's a pretty good effort. I absolutely love it!

I'm on Jedi covenant despite being in the UK...most of the guild I'm with are in the USA.

Currently rocking a 50 pve guardian...doing daily BH runs :/

Also leveling a sith maurader, sorceror, bh, smuggler, mando and consular; Levels being 31, 28, 17, 35, 25, 15 respectively.

I agree with this statement 100%. I've been playing MMOs since Ultima Online in 1997. Since then I've bounced around many other games, but the ones that kept my attention for any significant amount of time were Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and World of Warcraft. I've since cancelled my WoW account, and only subscribe to SWTOR. I personally love the game for many reasons. First and foremost, it's Star Wars. Second, even though it IS an MMO, I tend to be more of a solo player and socialize when I want or need to. SWTOR allows me to do just that. I love it.

Well if you want to look me up on the Ebon Hawk server, here's a list of my characters:

Republic:
Khelandros - Level 48 Jedi Sentinel
Atrias - Level 22 Trooper/Vanguard
Zhym - Level 17 Smuggler/Gunslinger
Alistaria - Level 1 Jedi Consular
Khisanith - Level 1 Jedi Knight

Empire:
Aeoar - Level 11 Sith Sorcer
Elistaria - Level 2 Imperial Agent
Solinus - Level 1 Sith Warrior

As you can see, I don't play Empire much.

Empire seems to be less populr. The guild I'm with has Ewp and Imp versions...of the 14 empire toons 3 are me.  I out level the guild leader with 2 of them lol

Been playing since launch and don't plan on leaving any time soon unless they come out with some other Star Wars MMO (but WILL be taking a break when 1313 drops)

The game goes free-to-play (all the way to level 50), on November 15.

I play on both Ebon Hawk (Republic characters), and Harbinger (Empire characters), and have no plans of leaving any time soon.

I started playing in the beta but took a very long break a few months after release and I'm back now, currently playing a lvl 32 Operative on the EU RP server.

I posted in the other thread, but I'll post here too.

Last time I played I did a free trial on a new account (let my sub end on my old one), so as a result I have a Consular named Attoru on that file.  My original account has my L50 Guardian, Neroattoru, but since they deleted Tarro Blood I have no idea where he is...

What server type was Tarro Blood?? If it was an RP server, chances are you are on Begeren Colony or Ebon Hawk. If it was PvP, then you may be on Jung Ma, which is a dead wasteland from what I hear.

It was PvE, IIRC

With ToR going free to play is there a RP server that US forum members frequent?  I wouldn't mind going on a server like that with my Sith Warrior

Title: Re: Are you currently playing SWTOR???
Post by: Solinus on November 13, 2012, 07:16:10 AM
Right now, the two RP super servers are Begeren Colony and Ebon Hawk. I believe the majority of us are on Ebon Hawk, but with no formal guild created as of yet. I'm working on that.

I'm on the Republic side right now as Solinus. But I have one of each character class so I can switch on the fly. :)

I've been contemplating going back.

What f2p model are they using?

Hybrid where you can still pay a subscription and get everything, but have somewhat limited things on f2p (like less storage space?).

I enjoyed the game alot, but I'm an altaholic and doing the same main questlines over and over burned me out pretty badly. But I had a 50 Sniper and 50 (tank Sith Warrior, forgot the class) and a lot of 20 - 40 rangers.

I may try it out again though once I get my PC up and running.

One question, did they ever update the CE Vendor like they said they would do on a regular basis? It was one of the things that drove me up the wall completely that they weren't doing.

Best thing to do is go to their website and check out the F2P information yourself. There's way too much info to even begin to explain it all.

I will personally maintain an active subscription. I've been paying for it, and I enjoy the game. But the F2P model may be for others. Who's to say? We'll see tomorrow when it goes live.

Yeah I just looked at them. They seem to have taken EQ's route, if I go back I think I'll go for a real subscription.

HK51 is tempting, but will probably wait for their first expansion

I started a character a couple of months back, but only played for a few hours before Skyrim and then Dishonored sucked me in.  With the motorcycles finally put to bed for our Canadian winter, some of that time will probably allow me to revisit TOR.

Cheers,
Saint

I reactivated my subscription and have been getting back into it.  Can't say how long I will play though, cause I'm still pretty active in GW2.

All my characters are on Prophecy of the Five, but I just made a couple of new ones on Ebon Hawke in case anyone ever does anything there.

A few of us are actively playing on Ebon Hawk, though it is still disorganized. We're still formulating plans for a guild and everything. I actually am having a hard time finding people to get online at the same time so that way I can actually form the guild. Haha.

Here is the website I found the list on... http://www.swtor.com/free/features (http://www.swtor.com/free/features)

Honestly Free-to-Play isn't bad if that's all you can afford; but if you can Sub its way better.

I was Beta then just missed getting my game for the founders title (still a bit pissed about that one).

But from what I have seen the servers have gone to hell in a hand basket because of the damn f2p morons. (I'm not saying all f2p are morons, I'm just saying a good number of them are) I have had more problems with f2p players than Subs these past few weeks.

But both me and Pin play, we play Republic only now, we used to have a few toons on the Imp side but never found a good guild so we said forget it and deleted them. But we hang out on Harbinger.

I agree the subscription is the way to go...IF you like the graphics and mechanics of the game.  It took half a day for me to download the client to test drive F2P.  I like it, but am unsure if the time I can commit is worth the price of admission.  I bought a lifetime sub for Star Trek Online (pre-order), which I also like, but just have too many distractions; like hanging out here and buying sabers.  :-p  -Saint

You really shouldn't judge every game on its graphics, some of the best games in the world are played in 8 or even 16 bit. And not everything can run the Frostbite engine.

As for the mechanics of the game they are the same as any MMO that I have ever played. The only REAL difference I see, is that you don't have auto attack, and you have a companion that makes up for at lest 1 person in the group of you have them geared right.

All MMO's seem to have the same mechanics. The abilities tend to be the same I just wish there was a Neutral side for Smugglers/Bounty Hunters. Because they can go for either side, and 9 default classes would be pretty awesome. Also why couldnt we be Trandoshan/Rodian/Wookiee? They're among my favorite Species next to Chiss.

When WoW came out they didn't have all the races they do now. Give it time, TOR has only been out for a year this Dec.

I'm kinda bummed about some of the restrictions on F2P. I'll stay F2P though, since the amount of time I actually devote to the game(and can devote to it) do not justify the price for the sub.

My real issue with F2P is the inability to use in game chat... you have to wait 60 seconds between your posts, so it makes RP or conversations really difficult at best.

I hate being limited to 2 characters also, as I tend to like making and playing alts to try everything out and tweak different appearance settings.  So far I've deleted level 30+ toons because I get burned out on the story and want to play something else... I think I currently have two characters at level 15 and 16, one Jedi, one Sith, though that's subject to change at any time.

I too am on Ebon Hawk, just not on as often as I was before my knee surgery  (gets difficult to want to sit at my desk when I cant stretch out my leg like I need to)

I'd love a subscription, but it's a tad difficult financially until I get back to work on a regular basis.

Or if anyone needs a speeder, or some cartel market items, I have a few spares that I'm willing to part with to help out a fellow Saberforumian (I treat the forums like I guild, I don't sell to guildies, only give).

The game is owned, developed and operated by EA/Bioware.  LucasArts just licensed it.
In this sense, it's already doing exactly what Disney wanted to do with Star Wars games -- use LA to license out the material to external developers and publishers.

Almost all of my toons are on The Prophecy of the Five server. I'm in a pretty active guild. And I'm guild leader of our darkside guild. I can create a toon l on Ebon Hawk. With all my collection unlocks he will be pretty set up at l10. If anyone makes a Republic toon on The Prophecy of the Five server send my primary toon Kamakazy a message and we will get you into Ascension. Or my Darkside primary Bergitte for Immortal Reign.  The Darkside guild isn't quite as active as the light side.

Right now we are hitting Asation Nightmare 8 and its a real Nightmare... o0

I feel guilty in the game right now, I'm murdering Ortolan's and all I can think about is that I'm killing Master Rel

Of course, I just have a hard time getting into the Jedi storylines, although I think my Shadow is my next person to level

One of the best leveling experiences I've had playing an MMO but the limited amount of class specific quests wasn't enough to inspire me to run multiple characters to cap. I also wasn't impressed with PvP or Raids.

Not super familiar with the new expansion, as soon as I sounded PvP oriented I lost interest. Plenty of places to get my PvP fix besides MMOs.

I enjoyed my time with it and I occasionally pop in and mess around for a bit now that it's F2P but not a long term fix for me either.

Been playing this since alpha and beta testing and still am playing it.  I really do enjoy the game.  Though that might be somewhat evident by my 14 characters, 6 of which are 50+.

I have had a sub since the start with the exception of a month or two break here and there.  I have a guild and I enjoy doing endgame ops runs so having the sub was good.  The decreased XP for non-subscriber is a little annoying when leveling, but obviously not an issue on endgame content.  With my sub and the cartel coins I've gotten I have purchased a lot of the account or legacy perks that you don't get when not a subscriber so things like titles and hide helmet and artifact level gear are still open to me even if I choose to turn off my sub.

Also don't forget about a putting a security key on your account, that's 100 coins a month just for having the physical key or the app on your phone.

I just picked it back up after more than a year off. Having 2-3 jobs at a time really kills any social life. I don't remember what server I was on, it's west coast though. I play sith.

I actually just cancelled my sub. I had a hard time getting back into the game after nearly a year of not playing, and having a subscription this entire time, made little sense.  :-\

I hadn't played in a couple weeks, but I logged on the last few days with the early release of the new Galactic Strongholds.  It's definitely a money sink, or a Cartel Coin sink if you have those stockpiled.  However if you were a subscriber during the most recent bonus times, you have a free and almost completely unlocked one on Nar Shaddaa.  There's also a cheap one on Coruscant and a really big and expensive one on Tatooine.

Title: Re: Are you currently playing SWTOR???

I'm just preferred so I have to wait till mid-September for this.  Only have about 500 cartel coins so, I don't know how much a stronghold costs, but I doubt I'll be able to do much with it.

Title: Re: Are you currently playing SWTOR???
Post by: Krace on August 26, 2014, 02:08:30 PM
Well, I don't know how much the Nar Shaddaa one is otherwise since it was free to me.  The Coruscant or Dromund Kaas one is 5k credits, so very cheap and a decent place to start.

Yes, the basic cost of that one isn't bad at all.  The add-on rooms to expand further than what they give you though are what is the bigger price tag.  Some rooms are 10k, some are 25k, some are 40k.   All in all, I opened most of the rooms without too much expense.  There was one room for 250k and one for 1 mil, so those are gonna cost you.  However this one is certainly cheaper than Nar Shaddaa or Tatooine.

FYI anyone who orders the 3.0 update ($20) will get 12x xp gains for class quests until the 3.0 launch.  I created a Guardian and got to level 55 in about 17 hours of playtime doing ONLY the class quests.  The trick is to do only class missions and use green loot drops and rewards as you level.  Then when you hit 47 go to your ship and start the Makeb storyline.  Makeb has a terminal that will bolster your stats while on planet.  with the 12x XP boost and one of the Major XP boosts active (and guild XP boosts that stack) I was getting 650k XP each mission on Makeb.

If anyone plays on The Prophecy of the Five my main character's name is P'Rife

Just got a laptop off a guy from work. First computer I've owned in over a decade.

I'm downloading The Old Republic while I'm here at work. Figured I'd eat up their WiFi.

I haven't played a game like this since Star Wars Galaxies. Are there any servers that are best to join, and are there any guilds that this forum has started?

Title: Re: Are you currently playing SWTOR???

I'm on Jedi Covenant, as well are some others.  There are also some forum people on Ebon Hawk and Harbinger as well.   Jedi Covenant is East Coast PvE, Ebon Hawk is East Coast RP-PvE, and Harbinger is West Coast PvE.  Kind of up to you to make a decision.  I have let me sub lapse for the time being cuz money is tight, but I am still playing the F2P.  Perhaps some others will chime in on their locations.

Title: Re: Are you currently playing SWTOR???

East coast doesnt really work well for me. I live in the Midwest, and I'm a second shift CNC machinist for caterpillar. So I'd be up a lot later than most. So, a west coast role play pve server would be more my style.

Title: Re: Are you currently playing SWTOR???
Post by: Krace on December 09, 2014, 05:55:18 AM
I live in the midwest as well, but I play on an east coast server.  It's just how it played out after they condensed several servers.  The main thing to east coast and west coast I'd say is your ping to the servers.  A friend of mine lives in Australia.  Sadly they did away with the pacific servers, so she has to use the west coast.  She tried East coast and it was even worse.  So don't let your location and time be your only factor, but if west coast time works well for you, I would suggest Harbinger.  Might be able to get in touch with some of the people here that play on there.  Not sure what the west coast PvE RP server is, or how many would be there.

Hah...   Keep on dreaming there.  There's no way a game like SWTOR would make it onto iPad.  It has too many high end requirements.  I have a Windows tablet and it runs on it, but not well, nor can you really turn up any of the graphics.  It's pretty much all set on low.  Also, it definitely needs a keyboard to play.  Too many hotbars and stuff you need control of.  Sure you could do most of it with touchscreen touching the hotbars, but I wouldn't wanna play like that for a long period.

It was pretty sweet that they brought that to the tablet.  Game mechanics are simple enough that it works, that and the game came out 11 years ago, which sometimes is kills me that it's been that long.  Definitely a great breakthrough game of a time gone by.

i am trying to get myself into it more, but i have a crazy work schedule, im almost busy all day long... from 5 am to 8pm.. i get a break in the middle of the day, if i dont get massages booked.. but i get called in alot too cause im like 15 min. from work and i always say yes... even when i am feeling really exhausted.. i just cant say no to money.. or my job...

my main is a lvl 60 Sith assassin, i have some other toons, but i have not played them much in nearly 3-4 months, working on relearning my pub  scoundrel, Tombaugh....  but i ant see myself working on any other servers at the moment, trying to get a few sets of cartel armors, so i can have my ratty tattered hermit look i want... its unfortunate, but i need several parts from 3-4 different outfit sets.. and i dont want to have to buy them separate over and over, its freaking awesome to be able to log in, and make a new toon, then just go to collections and pop.. pop..pop..pop... use what you want, toss the rest.. lmao!! i almost have every single cartel color crystal thats indestructible  (+41 to Endurance )

anyways,... i MIGHT be able to get more time on pub side in the next month.  gotta relearn my scoundrel again though, (in the process) i have a TeamSpeak server we can all use if we are on the same servers.. im focusing on "ebon Hawk" for now, me and Relan get on together when we can..

Now that I'm working steady again, I'm thinking about restarting my subscription.  I don't know though, I'm still on the fence with a lot of it, since I still don't have a lot of time to dedicate to it.  Three days a week I still get up at 0600, get to work at 0800, leave work at 1700, get to school at 1800 and don't get home until somewhere around 2230.  Then I go to bed and do it again the next day.  The nights I don't have classes, I'm usually trying to get assignments for the next class finished up, plus keeping up with wife, kids, something resembling a social life, etc...

Title: Re: Are you currently playing SWTOR???
Post by: Krace on March 03, 2015, 02:44:22 PM
You don't have to restart your sub.  You could always just buy the latest expansion to make sure you have the whole game open to you, then run it F2P on Preferred status.  It has a few drawbacks, but it's not too bad.  I bought almost every unlock that you could with my cartel coins while I was a subscriber so even though I don't have a sub right now, I still get several things that F2P doesn't normally have.

yea man im he same, i have the artifact items, titals, and a good deal of my inventory opened.. plus the 2nd bay in my cargo hold.. now, im working on my personal favorite outfit... unfortunately, it takes the parts from about 3 different outfits, ... i just got one outfit it needs unlocked, now to get the others from the in game market, then i can sub for a month, get the new black purple crystals, other wise just toss a few CC on my account and "unlock" the outfits in my collections for the account wide.. and ill be happy go lucky with any toon i start

As soon as I have time, (which admittedly may not be for a while due to work and my random helmet project) I will hop on And see which characters I have on ebon hawk. I think I have a sith healer and the jedi equivalent to a sith assasin..both are around level 15...my higher level character is on shadowlands.

I don't have a TeamSpeak server but will DL the program again if someone else does. If not, I'm okay with skype.

I'll post their names here by next week and whoever wants to add me can add me. I'll do the same if you post or pm me your characters names.

I'm stoked to join up with ya'll.

Lol...  You might have to be a little more specific.   ;)

There's 3 RP servers.  The East coast PvE and PvP ones(Ebon Hawk and Jung Ma), and the West coast PvE one(Begeren Colony).  I believe there used to be a West coast PvP RP server too, but it seems to be gone now.

well should you ever want to wonder over to ebon hawk, ill be there on ither my jedi guradian or my scoundrel.. or if your feeling like being a bit of a "rebal" ( you know you want to laugh at that pun)  i have a lvl 60 sith assassin tank.. mostly use fr gathering comms to boost up my lower lvl toon when they need upgrades for new lvls.

 all on Ebon Hawk

pub side Genakau - Jedi guardian
            Tombassh - Scoundrel

imp side   Velmau - 60 assassin
                Bellimere - 51 Jugg
                Deloryan - 42 Bounty hunter

i am currently working towards getting myself several sets of cartel armor... cause i have a problem.. im kinda the fansionesta in swtor.. and i have a sweet "raggity hermit" outfit i put together, but i want to have it able on any server, account wide.. so i gotta get the full outfit for 3 different outfits in order to unlock it on the collections.. so i can make it anytime i want.

once i have the 3 sets unlocked, i just might make a toon on other servers... but till then im going daily crazy on my lvl 60 mostly to get the cash and keep my eye on the GTM to snag the parts when i see them

If you haven't played in a good long while- aka since before they changed the skill tree stuff- then yeah you've got a bit to catch up on. Still not really a fan on the new skill line, I think its been dumbed down too much and I liked the ability to choose more openly what bonuses you wanted. Guess the advantage is now I don't have to think what to choose each time I level up

Have they made FTP any better, or do you still need to subscribe for the game to be any good?

Actually with their subscriber bonus XP thing they are running at the moment it makes it extremely skewed playing sub vs FTP. If you were playing FTP on your own or with other FTP people you wouldn't notice it as bad, but if you were FTP while with friends who are sub then the subs level up that much faster. I play with another SF member and he has been playing on prefered status for a while now. We were the same level, then with the sub bonus with only about 5 or so days of playing a few hours at a time I was 4 levels in front.

I believe the Rested bonus for subscribers would also stack with that, which just pumps it up even further.  If you also had a XP booster active, it too would increase your XP gain on top of the other two.  They basically made it so you could level up almost completely by just running your class driven story quests only.  If someone decided to do that, I would also recommend doing the main planetary story, which is usually the first one you pick up on the station or going planetside.  You go to mostly the same place and get more rewards.  The rest of the side quests you could probably ignore.  The idea was so that people could level to max in minimal time, start to gather some end game gear, and be ready for the next expansion in October that they are giving away for free to Subscribers.

I just reinstalled it last night, because I'm bored. I can't remember what server off the top of my head though, I want to say Harbinger, but I was transferred around a couple times when they merged servers. I played at release and by the time I hit 50, everyone else I know had quit (as it goes with MMOs). Still have a 50 Operative, and mid 30s Sorcerer and Powertech. Started playing with a Sage last night though.

I'm not really surprised by the skill line change; it's essentially the same thing WoW did with just a touch more flexibility to it. Just like in WoW, I miss the ability to split points between lines if I wanted.

I did end up starting a new character.  Wanted to try out the Great Hunt, so I made a Ratakka (Rakatta?) Hunter... I've finished Hutta, Balmorra, and almost all of Nar Shadda and am currently a level 29, which means I'm above the level for most of the mobs in the zone.  Maybe I should've made a Jedi or Sith... I already have a level 52 Assassin, but he was getting his @$$ handed to him in every fight on Ilium. Need new gear and get used to the skill restructuring...

They're quite interesting...but I don't want to spend 600 CC only to unlock a new species. I rather use them for Legacy XP Boosts or Companion Bonuses ^^

The best gear strategy, at least that I have found, is that you should get modable gear, as early as you can.  I usually try and buy a cheap set, or use one of my sets I get from my account from all the subscriber rewards.  Then I usually upgrade every other planet or so.  They lowered the cost for mods and such from vendors, so it only takes around 50 planetary comms to fully upgrade 7 pieces of armor plus your weapons.  If you do bonus missions and heroics, and you take comm rewards rather than gear rewards, you usually get enough.  Also you have to upgrade a companion if you want them to be any good.  The Ewok companion Treek is the best in the game IMO.  When you get her, they give you two sets of modable gear for her, so you can build one out for tank and one for healer.  She does both quite well.  Also, so that money isn't an issue, take up slicing.  Free money boxes all over the place, and missions that give you money boxes(although you have to stick to bountiful and rich to make a profit).  Also I do scavenging and sell all the metal I find and take from droids.  Huge cash there.  Lastly I take treasure hunting.  I usually don't bother with gemstones.  I usually either get lockboxes which often contain decent sellable gear, or I do companion gifts.  I believe I had amassed over a million credits before I even got to level 30.  I'm level 40-some and I have almost 2 million.

You're better off leveling a character to unlock the species.  XP boosts are good, though I'm not sure what companion bonuses you're talking about.  The only companion stuff I'd spend any money on would be Treek or HK-51.

I've got like 20,000 Cartel Credits... I never spent any during any of my times as a subscriber, so dropping some to unlock a few characters really isn't a big deal.  I do need to jump on the modifiable gear though... I just keep leveling up using whatever I find or earn... though usually I do take commendations before I take other rewards.

That's quite a lot of Cartel Credits.  I spent some of mine on several occasions.  I unlocked extra character slots, a bank tab, several things they restrict as a non subscriber like titles and equipment, in case I wasn't a sub.  Oh and Treek, that was a worthy purchase.  Most of the things I unlocked though, I waited until they were on sale.  Got most of them at a 25-50% discount that way.  I'm waiting until Togruta species goes on sale to buy it.  Probably will be my next Trooper or BH.  As far as gear though, you could buy a good looking set with Cartel Coins, or just use credits.  Now that armor plates and hilts/barrels don't cost 7 comms, I think the last time I upgraded my gear I had finished two planets and had done all the side quests and heroics and had 100 comms which was enough to upgrade all of my gear and all of my companions.  Since I was over leveled too from all the XP, it was gear from the next planet, so needless to say I was kicking butt the moment I got there.

with the two of us way over levelled we are just walking through stuff, only occasionally is anything actually a challenge. That's the advantage of sub with the huge XP bonuses. I look forward to the two of us starting new characters and pretty much playing just storyline missions and seeing how that goes for us :)

The only downside is that you get less comms, so less gear upgrades.  Also, I believe the epic Story XP boost ends in October when the next expansion comes out for Subscribers.  So if any of you are considering getting on that train, do it sooner rather than later.

Actually, 12x XP gives you 12x basic comms, so as long as you select that reward you'll be getting a ton.  Makes it pretty easy to stay geared, even if you skip the side stuff.

That is true.  You will probably make enough to upgrade yourself every planet, and perhaps your companion every other planet as it takes 100 to upgrade the both of you.

They decreased the cost for comms as well, so it takes less even as you earn more.  Plus if you get the latest level, you can actually go a few planets before having to upgrade (not to mention doing Flashpoints can get you some new gear for free).

I know they decreased comm costs.  Armors, barrels and hilts are only 2 now rather than 7.  It still takes 50 to upgrade a whole set (9 pieces) of modable armor and weapons/offhand, used to take almost 100 for just you or your companion.  Right now we're level 52 and going to Corellia, so we are very over leveled and we have lvl 49 mods.  At this point I'm saving for level 55 basic artifact level gear which costs 40-80 comms per piece.  I used to do flashpoints more, but finding a couple other reliable people to go sometimes isn't worth the headache or time.  :P

Honestly, from Makeb onwards they make it fairly easy.  Use the boost on Makeb (the GSI satellite thing) to get through that part, then the droid companion you get for the solo flashpoints helps you through those portions as well.  See how you fare before dropping a ton on the L55 gear, you might be able to save those comms.

Another fun trick we've been using lately is the legacy gear - buy comms with a high level toon and drop them in legacy storage for lower level ones.

I'm a little late on this, but:

If you are sub and want to level with F2P, you can get the free White Acute Module on Fleet; it negates the 12x XP bonus.  You still have the rest XP issue, but you can get around that in at least three ways: the F2P player can use XP boosts while the sub player does not, or the sub player can skip some side missions, or you can just not log out in rest areas.

I also suggest the White Acute Module for new players who subscribe; otherwise you end up insanely over-leveled, which (IMO) takes away some of the fun.  Only downside is that you can't get it until you get a character on Fleet (it's Bind on Legacy), so if you sub right away you might get over-leveled early.

Anyone playing the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion yet?  I'm eligible for the pre-release access, but my desktop fried the video card last week and may have wiped out one of my monitors with it, so I'm stuck using a crappy laptop (it at least works) that tends to overheat if I do anything more graphics intensive that watch a YouTube video.

Hopefully next weekend (Payday is next Friday) I'll be able to get a couple parts to get up and running again, and be able to check out the expansion.

I have the Pre-release access as well, but I'm trying to catch up on Revan since I never got it.

Also it is taking a lot of time to clean out inventories in all my characters.  This new patch made equipment on companions mostly obsolete.  They now just scale with you and your Influence level with them, which now goes above 10, and influence increases your Presence with them which makes them more effective.  They took a lot of gear off companions, some by mistake.  Other companions like Treek, Bowdar, T7, HK, etc that were not humanoid now only have a customization slot and a weapon slot.  The humanoid ones have the rest of the slots, but they gave you back all their starter gear, so you can deck them out in that if you like and then sell all their gear that's more expensive since gear stats no longer matter for comps.  You can put other gear on them if you like, but it's only for the looks.  It's been a bit of a pain since I have 16 toons, but I'm getting there.  Oh, and all companions can now be any spec whether it be tank, heals or DPS.  They also no longer have crafting specialties, so you just send them on whatever and your Influence increases how fast they do things, but they did also cut down mission times in general.

Anyway, sort of rambling.  Last thing I'll say is they took out Aim, Cunning, Strength, and Willpower.  All gear now just has Mastery, which takes the place of those 4.

Check out the patch notes, lots of changes have been done.  Hopefully I'll get through Revan soon and get to KotFE.

Oh and please avoid spoilers here all.  Make sure you block out text or something if you're gonna post them.

I just downloaded it again today. Might even pay for 60 days and try to knock the story out and all that.

Never really been a big fan of MMOs, but I need something that lets me be a Jedi until we get something new to play that's hopefully single player.

Like a Jedi Academy game that ends with whatever happened at the Temple with Kylo.

Yes, you should see a significant improvement.  I have seen SWTOR take 2GB by itself.  I have 8 in my machine(4x2) and it has served me well so far.  Though recently I am seeing limitations on my graphics card as it would not support Star Wars Battlefront.

In my experience, you see diminishing returns as you go up in RAM.  Getting to 4GB from anything below that is a drastic improvement--faster loads, less stuttering, everything.  4GB to 6GB (on the same computer) cuts load times noticeably (although the networking part of the load time, where the bar just pauses for a while at around 25% through, is unaffected by any changes to your computer).  6GB to 8GB (same computer again) seems to help further, but it's much less of an improvement--in part because the network aspect isn't affected.  8GB to 12GB doesn't seem to do a whole lot; maybe a very slightly faster load and a little less stuttering on some planets, but I think those are probably from other factors instead of RAM (the 12GB computer is newer and faster than the 8GB one, and it loaded more quickly even when both had 4GB.  If anything, I think the increased RAM made the newer computer's faster disk not matter as much--the load times seem closer to each other now).

Basically, I'd readily suggest upgrading from 4GB--to 8GB, ideally, but 6GB will do.  TOR isn't very resource-hungry; I'd be happier spending my money on Doritos and Mountain Dew than I would be from any performance gains over 8GB.  :)

I'd say 8GB is a good place to be because you have enough to run a resource hungry game, as well as run your OS and anything you might be running in the background, like browsers.

I'm not a huge gamer, so I don't run anything more resource hungry than TOR. That's why I didn't spend the money to go up in RAM, because I wouldn't see enough returns to justify an extra $100. I could have gotten 8GB on an i3 for cheaper, but I figured going down a processor would cancel out the gains of 2GB RAM. Plus the HP I bought has a slightly better graphics card, and I liked the way it was constructed better.

I meant to also add, once you get to 8GB, if you are looking to upgrade to more performance you are better off looking at a bigger graphics card or a SSD for your machine if you don't already have one.

I could have gotten 8GB on an i3 for cheaper, but I figured going down a processor would cancel out the gains of 2GB RAM. Plus the HP I bought has a slightly better graphics card, and I liked the way it was constructed better.

Here's what I've found do and don't matter for TOR:
  • Processor: Pretty much any quad-core 2.6GHz or faster will be similar.
  • RAM: 6GB will do you, and 8GB is as high as I'd bother with.
  • Storage: A decent 7200RPM disk is fine; with 8GB RAM, a SSD will pretty much help you when booting the computer and launching the game and not really beyond that.
  • Graphics: A GTX 550Ti (or equivalent) or better will happily run the game both quickly and beautifully.  As you go down from there, you need to decrease either resolution, graphics settings, or both.  Going above a GTX 750 isn't really going to matter.
  • Bus: You want PCIe 2.0 x16 or better.  Above that isn't really going to matter; below that, you'll cap your framerate.  In my experience, PCIe 1.0 x16 (or PCIe 2.0 x8 or PCIe 3.0 x4) is going to be stuck around 50fps no matter what proc or vidcard you have.  (Fortunately, this doesn't really matter unless you either have a really old motherboard or accidentally plugged your vidcard into the x16-wired-as-x4 slot that seems to be on a lot of motherboards.)
  • Network: Surprisingly important.  They helped load times dramatically around the time KotFE was released, but network speed--both bandwidth and latency--is still a significant factor.

That last one is an important point.  Shortly before KotFE was released, I was doing some very important testing (which is definitely not the same as "playing games at work") and found that a 3.2GHz dual-core Dell OptiPlex 980 with 8GB RAM on a university's Gigabit Ethernet had much faster load times than a 3.3GHz quad-core Dell OptiPlex 990 with 12GB RAM and 50Mbps FiOS.  (They had identical 7200 RPM hard drives.)  I don't just mean an "I got in and moved a few steps while waiting for you" definition of faster--I mean an "I wandered a bit and killed this group of mobs while waiting for you" definition of faster.  Don't misunderstand me--I'm not saying I'd shell out a fortune for 500Mbps networking at home just so I could load levels in TOR more quickly.  I'm just saying that if your guildmate in a college dorm always loads faster than you at your suburban house, you're going to look pretty stupid when you brag about your new 32GB RAM and Samsung 950 Pro SSD and he and his budget rig are still waiting for you every time you enter a flashpoint.

TL;DR: It's very easy to buy way more computer than TOR needs.

I meant to also add, once you get to 8GB, if you are looking to upgrade to more performance you are better off looking at a bigger graphics card or a SSD for your machine if you don't already have one.
I half agree and half disagree.

IMO, a SSD is one of the best things you can do for a computer overall, but for TOR it doesn't make that much of a difference compared to a decent conventional hard drive.  As far as TOR goes, I'd shell out for a SSD if I for some reason were limited to 4GB of RAM (but couldn't just buy a new computer).  With enough RAM, the game caches a lot of its resources so that your HD/SSD doesn't affect speed much aside from when you start it.  (Again, assuming a decent HD.  If you're using a 5400RPM disk, yank it out of there ASAP and beat it with a hammer to get revenge for all the anguish it has caused you.  You should probably back up your data before doing this. ;) )

A better graphics card can be very helpful, but only up to a point.  IIRC, my wife's GTX 750 runs the game at 1080p with maxed graphics at around 50-60fps.  My work computer's GT 730 runs the same resolution with mid-range graphics at around 30fps.  (In both cases, the framerate is capped by the graphics card.)  If you're considering upgrading (or playing with graphics settings), hit ctrl-shift-F and watch the color of the numbers in the lower left corner.  If they're red, your graphics card is not the limit--its your CPU or bus speed.  If they're consistently green, your graphics card is what's holding you back.  If they alternate evenly between red and green, they're balanced.  If they alternate evenly between red and green and are much lower than you want, you're probably going to be a lot happier saving up for a new computer than throwing money at the one you have.

...oh, and one more thought.  The system suggestions that I've given assume that you're running TOR and not a lot else--say, a couple browser tabs and TeamSpeak or something.  If you like to play games while leaving open 18 ad-heavy browser tabs, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Acrobat, Uplay, and Steam, then you're a danger to yourself and those around you and I hope you will commit yourself to the nearest psychiatric ward before it's too late.  :D

I had just installed a new graphics card back in November of last year.  A new GeForce GT 740, which fixed a lot of my issues, but the RAM, especially when running AutoCAD (I'm a CAD Drafter) was killing me, it just couldn't keep the program running smoothly.  Games also experienced lag, especially in heavily populated areas.

Eventually I'll end up with an SSD Drive as well, but that will come with the next board and processor swapout when it becomes necessary.

I just reached level 65 after playing on and off for 4 years. This is the first time I've ever reached "max level". It's a great game and the Knights of the Fallen Empire has got to be the best expansion any MMO has seen.

I play the game on Ultra with only a little stuttering when there's LOTS of particle effects. I have a GTX 750 ti, i5-330 CPU, with 8 gigs of RAM. I think the stuttering could be fixed by getting a new monitor. This old girl only runs 900p at 75 hz.

Recently decided to join this game. The reason is simple: SWTOR is old canon, old canon is gold canon, so I'm joining because kark you, Disney. I'm playing on the Jung Ma server, the character is a Jedi Consular named Caitlyn Ascura. Yeah, of the same Corellian Ascuras as Rina, only several millenia earlier.

I currently run a guild (mostly by accident) on the Ebon Hawk server. I've been playing for 4 years now, I think?

Working on the BH story line so I can get that legendary status.
Yeah, I don't really play the game. I've spent 90% of my time RPing there. It's been fun, but time to get down to business and finish that up!

I burnt up my video card tweaking overclocks monday night, but i have a gtx 1070 on the way so I'll be back and looking for guildies this weekend.

Very sorry for Necroposting but i do not want to create a new topic just to ask for a question ;)

As i have a Mac, i never played to SWTOR and it is frustrating  ;D

Now, there are solutions to run this game on a Mac. So i have questions for players:

Can we play solo a little? Are there enough people on servers? Is there place for newbies on these servers?

Thanks for your answers ;)

Heh, I do not envy you Mac person.  :P

Yes, you can solo all the way to the end.  The game has a class story that takes you through the planets all along the way, and each planet has a main story for that planet.  Of course there's also side quests along the way.

There are plenty of people on server since they recently did a server consolidation.  Most of mine are on Star Forge server, with a couple on Satele Shan, which used to be a west coast server.

As a newbie you'll learn for the first couple planets.  There are 4 starter planets, 1 for 2 sith classes, 1 for Imp Agent and Bounty Hunter, 1 for 2 Jedi classes, and 1 for Smuggler and Republic Trooper.  That planet will help get you going, then there's a "central" planet for your faction you head to next that everybody passes through, still more learning there.

If you just download and play, you'll be Free to Play(F2P) and have the most restrictions. If you buy anything(premium currency, starter pack, etc.) or sub for a month you'll be preferred(or obviously sub for that month), and you'll have less restrictions.  Also there's a pack on Amazon that has a LOT of stuff to it, which includes all DLC, a sub card, and some premium currency that's a good buy if you decide you wanna have a better time with the game.

I'm still on about 4 hours a month, in fact, it's currently the longest running game subscription (and the only game subscription) I have.  I was a Beta tester back in the day, and I just can't bring myself to give it up.  I'm not sure what server I'm on anymore, I started everything on Ebon Hawk, but they've consolidated the player base a few times and I lost track... Star Forge sounds right...

I'll echo what Krace said, there are still several folks on, lots of RP Guilds out there.
Solo content is all there, you don't have to group with anyone ever if you don't want to.  Groups definitely help the Heroic quests/missions though, but you can solo flashpoints, as the game will give you an AI companion to help out.

Sentinels take a while to come into their own, but they're stupidly powerful once you're several levels in. Not so great defensively, but your brutal attacks make up for it.

F2P has restriction, that sounds ok. But, do these restrictions enable you to discover the game for several hours?

F2P restrictions are somewhat limiting. Fewer character slots, barely hold any money, no mail, can't start PMs, can't use top rarity gear. But having said that the entire main game is available to play. I do suggest subbing once as that opens up all the expansions and makes you preferred. A preferred player has fewer restrictions while still being F2P. They get more character slots, can hold money, can use the mail but cannot send money via mail, they still cannot use top gear but you can buy perks to remove many of the restrictions either with cash or off the auction house in game. Use the account key, it gives you 100 cash shop points a month for using it and it increases your account security.

The game gets really annoying when you're near your credit cap. It pops up a message every time you earn credits, which you do right and left in the game. ::)

I definitely don't recommend totally free, unless you literally just want a little demo of the game before committing to anything. But, for $5, preferred status is worth it, especially if you plan to really play.

That's because you're DPS (damage per second.) DPS classes always get less health but stronger attacks. The idea is, by the time something can knock your health all the way down, you've killed it. Tanks are the ones that can take more damage. That's one path you can take as a Jedi Guardian. But, the trade-off to being able to take more hits is that your attacks are weaker.

Free will still get you hours of play, even solo, yes.

This is the Amazon pack.  Pretty worth it for the money considering 90 days alone is $45 USD (plus tax)

Yes, there are some Europe servers for English, French, and German if those are better for you, especially in distance being closer.  Less server lag.

Preferred is definitely better than free and worth the $5.  The account key is a good idea for the 100 Cartel Coins a month for sure.

To avoid credit cap as a free player you can just get one of the starter strongholds.  I think you need to hit Legacy 10 to open Legacy stuff and then you can have a Legacy storage and you can just dump credits in there so your inventory doesn't hit credit cap.

One of the best first things to buy with Cartel Coins is the Artifact armor unlock.  Then you don't miss out on the better armor in the game, especially modable armor.

You guys are making me want to play this again, but I really want to finish KOTOR (for the three dozenth time or so) on my XBOX One first. I may at least get the game updated so that I can play it after I finish KOTOR again. My Jedi Sentinel is somewhere in the 30s or 40s, level wise, and I can always start another character. I kind of want to play through the Consular story line. I've never even gone all the way through Chapter One (the main class story lines) on any character class other than the Jedi Knight one.

I think I'm going to create a Cathar Jedi Sage when I play again. :D

My wife got me into Elder Scrolls Online recently (She bought it, I won't complain) but it still doesn't scratch that MMORPG itch like EverQuest did back in the day, or WoW when it first released... maybe I've just gotten older and crankier, but I can generally do without the MMO part of an MMORPG anymore...

I just love the fantasy aspect of ESO. I am actually a bigger High Fantasy fan than I am a Sci-Fi/Fantasy or straight Sci-Fi fan. LOTR being the gold standard. Elder Scrolls is cool, and I am loving Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, but LOTR is where it is at. But SW is awesome, so I am looking forward to playing more of SWTOR.

Somebody recommended I check out Sanderson's Oathbringer but I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy yet and I think it is the third part of another trilogy called the Stormlight Archives, so would need to read the first two as well.

Oathbringer alone consists of one prologue, 122 chapters, 14 interludes and an epilogue!  :o

Lots of fun. What I've played of the Imperial Agent story is really good, so is the Trooper story. Bounty Hunters are a lot of fun, but Smuggler is my favorite non Force user. You go to the same planets as the other classes, obviously, but you have underground contacts and whatnot. (a lot of meetings in cantinas) Plus, much like a Bounty Hunter, you feel like you have more freedom because you're not a member of the Jedi, Sith or governments. Plus, you can perform a move called a "dirty kick" as a Smuggler. Just guess where you kick dudes. :o (it works on droids too, for some reason)

Agent and Smuggler are probably the most fun two on either side of the non-Forcies.   Whether male or female you definitely get to sleep around a lot as either class, almost a hookup on every planet you go to.  Also both have two female companions and you can romance both, which while doing so funnily enough comes to a head that you get far enough with either one that there's a showdown.  Quite entertaining.

Both have a very good story.  Playing Agent again for the third time now.  One of the better in the game.

Smuggler takes a while to get rolling... the first 20 levels of "Where is my ship..." get really old, really fast... but past that, it starts getting fun.

Ok Guys, after hours of downloading and several unix script lines, SWTOR can be launched on my fruit computer ... and it seams to work :P

I will start on a European French server in the beginning to learn the gameplay as a noob but maybe one day, I will come to an American one to meet you :P

I want to start with a Republican Commando (I read that it can make a good healer or a good tank) ... Do you have any advices?

I'm glad you were able to get it working, Master Seblaise. :)

Trooper is a great character class. Personally, I've always been partial to Vanguards, that's the tank one. Aric Jorgan, your first companion, is a Commando, so his abilities compliment yours. Also, you can set him to heal, because you can do that with all companions now. Once upon a time, each had different abilities. Anyway, that's my take on the Vanguard or Commando. Both are really nice, but I like Vanguard just a little more.

Heh, I'm definitely not knocking your choice of Commando. It's a great class. Big guns and, as you said, can be a healer or DPS. I don't think you can tank with Commando, but it's been a while and I could be wrong. (or they could have changed it)

Yeah, I jumped you ahead a bit there. Sorry about that. The way it used to work is that you'd actually pick your advanced class at level 10. That gave you some time to get a feel for things. Changing it to happening much earlier is both an advantage and a disadvantage.

No no, no problem, everything is OK ;)

Maybe I am wrong about commando as I can not find any other sources that say commando is a good tank ;)

Maybe I am wrong but if I have to start solo, a tank is better than a DPS ...

What is better all depends on your play style. Sometimes, the best defense is a good offense. ;) But, it's all about personal preference.

As I said, Commandos may be able to be tanks. It's been too long since I played as a Trooper. Either way, you get big guns and cool armor as a Trooper. Plus, I really like the story to it.

One I get playing and a bit higher etc. I wouldn't mind meeting up with some of y'all. I think that could be fun.

I've never cared much for being a tank. I much prefer sneak attacks and assassinations and DPS (they are juts funner). On ESO I am pretty much my groups tank, but I'm also a Nightblade (assassin), so I've got both on there.

That's one of the things I like about being a Smuggler. One of the advanced classes (Scoundrel, I think) gets a stealth ability. So much fun sneaking up behind enemies and shooting them in the back with a scatter gun. :D

For the Trooper class I preferred Commando rather than Vanguard.  The assault cannon is so much more fun.

As Commando you can be DPS or Healer.  Vanguards can be DPS or Tank.

Your first companion is a Trooper, but they changed him around and I believe he's now a sniper, doesn't use a cannon anymore.  Also, all companions basically have the same 5-6 abilities now, so none of them really "compliment" you.  All companions can be DPS, Heals, or Tank, so it's up to whatever you need.  The biggest difference now is if a companion is melee or ranged.

Heh, I'm definitely not knocking your choice of Commando. It's a great class. Big guns and, as you said, can be a healer or DPS. I don't think you can tank with Commando, but it's been a while and I could be wrong. (or they could have changed it)

You now pick your advanced class at the start when you make your character.  Again, Commando is DPS/Heals and Vanguard is DPS/Tank.  Depends on the skill specialization you pick.  Honestly, don't worry about needing to be a tank at the start.  Things die rather easily in the beginning.  Think about the role you are going to want to be later on.  Troopers are tough since they are a heavy armor class.

I created a Vanguard Republican Trooper on a European French Server ... and I had a little walk on Ord Mantell ... It is fun ... Lvl6 for the moment ;)

Oh, too late I guess to help.  Sorry.  Hope you have fun with that though.

Great stuff. ;D You'll level up super fast in the beginning, as I'm sure you've already noticed.

Also, all companions basically have the same 5-6 abilities now, so none of them really "compliment" you.  All companions can be DPS, Heals, or Tank, so it's up to whatever you need.  The biggest difference now is if a companion is melee or ranged.

Ah, that's right. It's a shame, Aric used to be a really cool Commando. Since they nerfed leveling and made the companions more generic, I usually have mine set to "passive" unless I'm fighting a really tough enemy and losing. ;)

Bounty Hunter is loads of fun. Similar skills and armor to a Trooper, but with pistols and no attachment to the government, like a Smuggler. I always liked the one with 2 guns, don't remember what it's called.

For Smuggler the two pistols is Gunslinger.  For Bounty Hunter it's Mercenary.  Powertech is the other spec for BH.  Merc is DPS or Heals, PT is DPS or Tank.

The skill trees aren't what they used to be.  Now it's pretty linear as you level up.  There are some extra perk points you pick up along the way that allow you to choose some things, and I just pick the ones that seem to make the most sense with my damage abilities or reducing cooldowns on stuff I use a lot.

If you want a guide, Dulfy is a good place.  Here are a couple links.

I downloaded Ccleaner to my system and fixed all registry errors. (one of the "joys" of Windows ::) ) I also used it to completely remove all files associated with SWTOR. Then I used Origin to reinstall, and it's working now.

I've actually been playing again... and yet again, the Empire characters are the only ones appealing to me.  Not sure why, probably bad/repetitive story arcs for the Republic, but I just can't get into any of them.

I've got a smuggler/gunslinger that I pretty well abandoned in his mid 20's, and a trooper that I actually completed his story, and those are my only two republic characters that I've kept around.  I've got like 4 Sith characters, three of which I've completed their arcs, one of them I've actually "completed" the game with (all the extra stuff they've released)...

I'm thinking of playing a Bounty Hunter myself, since I got the game working again. Probably a dual wielding merc.

One thing that irks me about playing a Jedi or a Sith in the game is that you're either really good with a blade, or you have a lot of Force powers. There's no in between.

As long as you do all story and side quests, you'll stay two or three levels above the part of the planet you're on. They seem to think everyone wants to level up as quickly as possible to reach the end game content, that's why there's an XP drop for free players, but some of us just want to enjoy the story.

Its not so bad. Nowadays the grind isnt near what it used to be, what with increased xp from missions, world "arc" quest chains, and the game giving out 2x boosters like candy weve been able to reasonably stick to main planetary and class quests without being underlevelled.

Same, I'm in the 3rd expac now. It's been a fun journey playing through most of the stories as well. As was said, there are some GREAT storylines. I think I'm 2 away from legendary.

But since 7.0 changed up the combat system slightly you can play the Origin Stories with different weapons now. Like if you wanted to play a Bounty Hunter but use a sniper rifle, 2 blasters, or a cannon like Canderous would in KOTOR you can pick those as your base class. And if you have gotten to Dark Side or Light Side 5 on a character, you can make a Force user of the opposite faction using the other abilities at start. Meaning you can play Sith Warrior story as a Jedi Sage, or start out Jedi Consular story as a Lightning Sorcerer. It's been amusing.
