Title: Best way to display a saber on the wall?
Post by: Jacob P. Galvatron on January 04, 2011, 04:17:06 AM
I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I was hoping someone here could help me out. For years I've wanted to mount my sabers on the walls of my apartment, I've seen other folks do it but I'm not quite sure what exactly I'd need and how hard it would be. I would prefer to do some horizontal and some vertical, with an easy enough option for taking them down when I want to mess around with them. Any suggestions on what to pick up from the hardware store?

Hey mate... are your renting your place or is it your own?

I only ask because it would affect the type of mounts you can use.... Here in Australia if your renting an apartment you cant put mounts or anything in the walls!

Our Star Wars lightsaber stands can be wall mounted using two drywall screws.  Think Geek makes a vertical stand:

But they aren't as easy to get your saber out of.

I just use long drywall screws to hang my sabers horizontally on my wall.  Drill one near the base of the hilt, the other half way up the blade, and you're set.

There's always using hooks that you screw into the walls in the same way Ultra mounts his sabers. There's also finding things that use glue rather than poking holes in the wall, but the problem with that is finding some that will 1. hold the saber and 2. support its weight. A bit of a challenge, but I'm sure it can be done.

I agree with Oz Drift3r, I would double check with you landlord before you do anything if you don't own the place. :)

Thank you for the tips guys. Thankfully I've already okayed everything with the landlord, so now I just need to figure out which of these routes I want to go with.

There is also something like this:

Thats what I used:

If my landlord allowed it.... I'd go for the vertical ones at think geek. Then i'd have one of the stands from UltraSabers to display my favourite on the desk!

Did you have to replace the top plastic clamps wolfen? the part that actually holds the blade?

Or were they flexible enough to stretch out around the 1" tube?

They were flexible enough to stretch and I haven't noticed any damage to the blade. Most of those sabers are gone now, only the Vader is left.

Good to know they didnt damage the blades at all.... this is a really clean and tidy way to display them.

The best way to display a light saber on the wall is impaled through your enemy then into the wall. ;)

I cant claim credit, I saw someone else do it on another forum.

If it's not, that is a good idea. The only thing you might have to do is adjust the part that will be in contact with the blade. You might have to raise it or make the more room for the blade. Cool idea though.

I've got a solution for vertical mounts that I've been using around the house.  Here are some pics in my theater room.  This solution is cheap and can be done for easy removal or difficult removal (I have a 3 year old who loves his sabers so i go with the more difficult removal). I use Simpson Strong-Tie right angle plates from Home Depot to support the hilt (model A21) with two drywall screws. I put stick-on felt where the pommel seats to protect it from scratching. At the very top of the blade I use 8" clear Commercial Electric mounting ties (also from Depot) secured with one drywall screw. You could get away with just these and easily remove the blade from the wall but I chose to add black Commercial Electric mounting ties around the middle of the hilt and secure it with another drywall screw. They can't be removed easily and I've had no issues with them falling off the wall. You can barely even tell they are there.

Snip

Wow very nice. Any way you could give us some close ups so we can see what the mounts look like?

Here's some close ups.

90-degree plate supports hilt (felt protects pommel)

Clear mounting tie supports blade tip and secures to wall w drywall screw (tie is trimmed to fit)

Views of clear blade tip mounts with blades lit and lights on (i'll try and post some with lights out tonight)

Optional "kid-proof" center tie for hilt (you can skip this one if you'd like to easily remove the blade from the wall).

The basic parts you'll need.  I started using 90-degree plates that were longer on the wall side but found the smaller ones work just as good and are a necessity for curved-hilt sabers like the Dooku.  They also cost less at 60 cents each. I paint mine flat black.

Each mount setup costs in total about a buck or so.  Or you can pay $120 for this mount:

Thank you toddshogun. I might have to get some of those since they only cost $1! Wish I could afford that R2-D2 mount though...
