Title: Converting WAV Files to LSU Using Audacity - Step by Step Tutorial
Post by: eerockk on December 17, 2012, 12:28:39 AM
Hi everyone. I just thought I might make a tutorial on how to take a Stereo WAV file, and turn it into an LSU file for your saber.

Step one, download the Obsidian Launcher (http://www.ultrasabers-uploads.com/launcher/v2.2.2/v2.2.2.zip) and Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/) and install them if you haven't already.

In Audacity, open the WAV file that you wish to convert. You might find that two tracks appear instead of one. The first thing you'll need to do is join the left channel with the right one. In the tiny menu next to the track, click on "Split Stereo To Mono"

The LSU Converter needs a Mono track, so now that we have two duplicate mono tracks, you can now close the bottom track. Click the X that's circled in the picture below. (Notice that I trimmed the long audio file into a 4 second clip)

Now that we have a single, mono track, it's time to modify the bit rate and sample rate of the file. LSU files require 16-bit, 48000 Hz, mono samples to convert to LSU. The mono is already covered! :)

To change the Sample Rate:

To change the Bit Rate:

And in case the track isn't set to Mono:

There is one silly master setting that I always forget about when converting WAVs, and that's the global project settings. The image below shows the two areas that must all have the 16-bit, 48000 Hz, mono samples settings applied:

Now you're ready to export! Click File -> Export to continue.

Choose where you want to save it, give it a name with no spaces in the name, and then select WAV Microsoft (Signed) 16 Bit PCM as in the image below:

Hit Save to convert the WAV file. One other box pops open when you click Save, but you can just hit OK to continue.

Once you've saved the WAV file, close Audacity, and don't bother saving the Audacity file as what you want has already been exported.

Next, to convert the file to LSU, open the LSU Converter from the Obsidian Launcher folder, and once the program is open, load the WAV file that you saved earlier. If you like, you can password protect your LSU files, but for simplicity, just unclick Locked, and then covert the file! Remember to not include any spaces in your LSU file, and keep them around 5 seconds or less for best results.

Thanks so much!  I've been trying to figure out how to do this, but I don't know my way around Audacity very well yet.  Point!

Yes, and thanks for sticky-ing this thread.  I've already got the "first draft" of my Thunder/Rain font on my saber for testing.  Just need to get some better sound effects to sample so I can tweak it some more.  :D

I tried to do this step-by-step, but each sound clip consistently comes out accelerated.  Almost like each clip is in fast motion.  I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, seeing as I've done everything on here to the tee.  Any help would be most appreciated with this. Thanks.  :)

when you switch it to 48000 it will make it quicker but just to go effects and change speed to -54.00 and it will fix it. then export.

Post by: eerockk on December 24, 2012, 12:25:57 PM
That's good to know, man! For some reason, that doesn't happen for me. I wonder why upping a sample rate would change the speed though?

Post by: NinjaJesus on December 24, 2012, 08:54:38 PM
OK everything worked well and I got everything converted. Thanks, guys. Points to both of you.  :)

On a side note, after I converted the sounds and put them on my saber, it sounds like there's a split-second pause inbetween each sound.  For example, there's a split-second pause between the Power On and the Hum.  I noticed that the other non-converted sound fonts, like the Starkiller or Sith, don't do that.  Anyone else notice this with their sounds or have that same problem?  I was wondering if that's just how it is or if it can get fixed. Thanks.

Do your sound clips have empty space before or after the sound? You might have to trim the front end and/or back end of your sound clip. PM me if you like.

Fantastic work, Eerockk! (point)

And something that just has to be said: for the short time you've actually been on the forum, you're one of the most active contributers (and high-quality as well). I like your work and views very much (well, for a Jedi, mind!).

Will follow your progress with great interest (and, of course, try to tempt you to join the Dark Side 8))

Thanks, Darth Sabre! The honor is to serve - Jedi and Sith alike... I'm just paying forward what was shown to me when I started, and what made my Bellicose purchase turn out better than I imagined. This forum rocks, and I'm happy to do what I can! Thanks man. I appreciate what you said greatly. :)

Now I'm kind of getting into it. Once I start practicing recording more expect some cool fonts from me. Is it okay to record from youtube videos? Only thing I'd have trouble with is capturing just the lightsaber sounds and muting out the voices and other sounds. I want to get a Kit Fisto style font made.

Post by: LORD VANE on January 13, 2013, 02:54:27 AM
Audacity has a program where you can filter out unwanted sounds. Just play with it. The best way to do it is capture it off the movies using a audio ripper.  Sometimes YouTube videos won't have the best audio quality

Title: Re: Converting WAV Files to LSU Using Audacity - Step by Step Tutorial

The video I found actually has good audio quality for once and my laptop has a built in mic so I'm good to go. xp

Title: Re: Converting WAV Files to LSU Using Audacity - Step by Step Tutorial
Post by: Zren Tobas on January 13, 2013, 03:20:24 AM
I just recorded the entire video. Alot easier. I just need to figure out how to cancel the voice except for when Fisto calls for R-6's help because that'll be the boot, then the background music and Greivous's extra sabers. Like I just want Fistos sabers in. Or did I have to edit each sound individually? Like power on, off, motion, impact, lock up? I didn't really think about that. Or can I do all the sounds in one thing?

Post by: Zren Tobas on January 13, 2013, 04:25:42 AM
@Vane. Whats the filter for unwanted sounds? I'm doing a different easier font at the moment. Working on the swings. Its the first saber fight on Episode 3. Then same with the lock up, impact, and Anakin's only power off at that scene. I'm kind of getting the hang of it better though.

Never mind I figured it out finally. Now to figure out to get just the saber swings... Then impacts will be next and ect.

Yeah man, Audacity can be weird sometimes. If you're only going to use Audacity for saber fonts, try the following:

Go to Edit -> Preferences, and find the Quality Option on the left. In the first two options that appear, set your 16bit and 48000Hz settings here, and Audacity should have no choice but to bend to your iron will of.... iron. Yeah.

eerockk,

I know the topic is about wav files converted to lsu files. But I was wondering if mp3 files be converted to lsu files?

They would have to be converted to 16 bit wavs, but it's a matter of dropping it in to Audacity and exporting it right away. Zren Tobas is right though. If you're saying that "hey, I'm just going to email Erick the files and let him sort it out", then I'd say sure! PM me for my email address if you would want me to convert the files to LSU, and I'll even review the font in a video and post the files publicly as well, if you would like. I'm always happy to do that, and it's been awhile too! I'm kind of itching to do a review! :)

Does it say connection lost? Try again, but remove all of the sounds from the right side, and then try reloading all of the sounds you have.

Note that every slot must have at least one sound file for it to work; you can't leave one blank. Removing the files from the right before loading your own on will show you if you're missing a sound.

Hi everyone. I just thought I might make a tutorial on how to take a Stereo WAV file, and turn it into an LSU file for your saber.

Here you are, sir! It's good to familiarize one's self with the ins-and-outs of the software too! When the saber arrives, all you'll have to do is charge the batteries and then upload the goods. The Dooku soundfont is now standard on my Overlord.

Has anyone ever tried to play around with Imperial March? I did and made the pitch way low and the song sounded more intimidating. Lol. It was kinda cool. I know there is a slow version already made of the song but I can't find it.

Before you click convert on a set of WAVs, you should uncheck the 'lock' checkbox. Also, you might try running the program as administrator on Win Vista or higher.

If all of that fails, I'm just a PM away! ;D

Yes you need to download an older version. I'm stumped though I cant get the LSU converter to run... it says it's missing files.

I installed v3.2.2 onto my desktop, and then installed v2 into that v3.2.2 folder. the LSU convertor i placed into the v2 folder, along with all the other files which i do not understand well enough to explain..

Essentially, install the new one first, then v2, and make sure everything v2 related is in the same place. it seems to work for me, although how easy it will be to replicate i do not know.

But don't I need to use V3 since I have the newer board? Or can you use v2 to convert everything and the new version to upload? I can take screenshots as I go in case I get it working to update the OP.... as soon as I start a load of laundry haha.

i don't know if you actually need v2 for the convertor to work, all i can be certain of is that you need to at least download v2 in order to get the convertor on your computer.
Other than that, i'm afraid i'm not much use  :-X

Title: Re: Converting WAV Files to LSU Using Audacity - Step by Step Tutorial
Post by: dlevans on March 17, 2015, 03:31:00 AM
YES I GOT IT TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are correct, you need 2.2.2 to get the actual program on your computer.

After watching Ultra's video he made when that version came out I skipped through the scary error messages and towards the end he said to get the LSU converter to work you need to place in in the C:\program files\ultra saber folder so I put LSU_converter.exe in my C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher folder.

It still didn't work.

LSU_ave some error that said something about an unregistered comdlg32.ocx file.... off to Google I went.

Turns out those types of files are Active X files (http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/146219 (http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/146219)) and Windows can register them manually!!

Score!!

Go to the 2.2.2 folder and unzip obsidianusb.CAB. Inside that folder should be the file comdlg32.ocx.

For the next step you need to open a command prompt as an admin (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-elevated-command-prompt/ (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-elevated-command-prompt/)) then navigate to the obsidianusb folder inside the 2.2.2 folder.

In the command prompt type "cd C:\Users\Dustin\Downloads\v2.2.2\obsidianusb" where "Dustin" is your username.

Next type Regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx. A pop up should say DllRegisterServer in comdlg32.ocx succeeded.

Now try to launch the LSU_converter.exe ... mine still didn't work. Gave an error about missing ultrasabers_small.bmp being in C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher.

Dang... but wait!!! inside the the obsidianusb folder in the 2.2.2 folder is a file called ulstrasabers_small.bmp. I just put it inside C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher and viola!

It totally worked!! I just downloaded an mp3 from youtube and converted it using audacity and LSU_converter.exe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So now I have 3.2.2 with the LSU_converter.

Enjoy guys  8) . I'm headed to bed. g'night. MTFBWY.

Well the video didn't pan out like I'd like.... so here's a guide:

I had 3.2.2 and 2.2.2 installed so I uninstalled both of them to start from scratch. (Your mileage may very.)

Get 3.2.2 from here: http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=11988.0 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=11988.0)
Get 2.2.2 with the converter from here: http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=3693.0 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=3693.0)

Download 3.2.2 and 2.2.2 and extract them to your desktop.

Inside the 2.2.2 folder is another file called obsidianusb.CAB. Unzip it as well.

Install 3.2.2 and make sure everything works with it before doing the next steps.

Now that your 3.2.2 is working, let's install the converter...

Open the 2.2.2 folder you extracted and move LSU_converter.exe to C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher.

In the obsidianusb folder you extracted move ulstrasabers_small.bmp to C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher.

**NOTE: ALSO MOVE THE comdlg32.ocx FILE TO C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher**

Click the start menu and type "cmd". Right click on cmd.exe and click Open as Administrator. Click yes if it asks for permission.

**NOTE: ALSO MOVE THE comdlg32.ocx FILE TO C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher THE PICTURE IS WRONG AND SHOULD BE FROM C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher NOT YOUR DESKTOP**

In the command prompt type cd C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraSabers\Obsidian Launcher and press enter.

Next type Regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx and press enter.
A box will pop up that says "DllRegisterServer in comdlg32.ocx succeeded." Click ok.

Your LSU Converter should now be working. w00t!!

I use YouTube to find a lot of my sound effects and http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ (http://www.youtube-mp3.org/) to convert them to audio files. Once you have your audio file, you can go to the start of this guide and convert the file for your saber.

You can also cut them down to size using Audacity.

Thank you all for your comments here and those forms as I am just beginning to learn what the Obsidian soundboard is and how I might bring out its full potential (which I am not certain has been realized yet in these devices). I came in there basically to learn exactly what you posted!!!

I have a few tips as well that are from my personal experience as a sound producer:
There are myriad sound production apps that allow voice or instrumentation to be completely manipulated.
Surprisingly enough, the most powerful of these for the average user or on your mobile platforms, often in the form of free or professional applications in your app store. All of these applications are designed to mimic professional studio software. And I can tell you from experience that they work great if you DO NOT ALREADY know what you're doing as far as sound production goes. These applications will allow you to create files using a fraction of the processing power but will not give you the strength of professional sound editing software (at hundreds of dollars per copy and license).

If you are interested in using PC pro level sound software (products such as the many clones of former ProTools), in order to have real control over shaping your sounds, I want you to realize first that there is a huge learning curve with these software applications. Even if you know exactly what you're doing in one application, when you get another company's application it can take you weeks or months to learn how to do the same things in their menu systems because the history of applied sound engineering is so complex. This is why I advocate mobile software because it has been created to be intuitive and easy to use without much processing power. I myself use both Mobile and laptop software suites to create and produce sounds, but over time I'm moving more and more to the mobile platforms for the advantages that they lend to production.

All that said: if you actually know as much or more than me about sound production I just wanted to point something out. The power of creating a mix down file means that you do not have to worry about converting something with in a file itself, which can complicate its performance as a software driven sound (re. speeding up of sound, above^)The tutorials about that describe going through the audacity file conversion process from stereo to mono is a couple of more steps than I have to take with my software, but is A GOOD EXPORT TUTORIAL. When I'm in my pro software I simply choose a menu selection and it does this job for me quickly of course. When I am on my mobile software, what I will do is make a mono mix down of a stereo track - this allows me to control the overall levels of the sound and sometimes even benefits from compression filtering. By creating a mixed down you're basically making a copy of the file you had before with different parameters than the original. When mixing from stereo to mono, you also cut the data in a half roughly, if not more. Then AFTER you have this new mono sound file, it is easier to manipulate. [exceptions: translating panning and reverb require some pre-production work before mixing - trust me.]

Just a couple tips from somebody who's been in the trenches with sound production for several years now and would like to help people speed up some of the difficult parts.

;)

The lsu converter is in the Obsidian V2 download, it's in a seperate folder from the soundboard launcher. Unfortunately it's not Mac compatible.
To my knowledge there's no Kylo font available as no one knows enough of what his lightsaber sounds like yet.

This just won't work for me! :( eevrytime i download the latest Obsidian launcher, it tells me its V1 not 3.2.2 and it looks totally different from the images showing the launcher >.<

I have followed the rest of the tutorial but to no avail, the folders are laid out differently and even when following anyway and putting the files when told to, when i get to the cmd part, i type in the the path route and it tells me that it isnt there! >.<

Do i have to do it this way around to convert .WAV files to .lsu files? or can i just use the v2.2.2 converter? (I have v3 sound, or will do when it arrives on Wednesday!)

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Here's a Youtube video with a lot of sound effects from the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to6bJ7xDw_U

I would make it in the Font maker myself, but I'm still unexperienced, so I don't have the timing down just yet, and there's a lot of delay in between sound effects, so if anyone else wants to take this project upon themselves, then have at it. ...that and I kinda need this one too, since I'm going to the premiere decked out in my Sith garb and toting my Flamberge.

I have the V4, and I'm experimenting with soundfonts. Is there any benifit to using .lsu over .wav files?
Also if anyone has advice on getting smooth transitions between sounds, I would love you forever! I have trimmed and made sure the sounds match up, but when it's in the saber, I still get a noticeable gap, pause or whatever. Please help! Thanks!

^   I've tried a few things with no success, and it can be very frustrating. The last thing I tried was attaching the hum before and after each swing/clash to help each one transition back into the hum. But I still get the pause in between. Not sure how to smooth that out.

The trick is having a hum that loops perfectly. If you have that, then keep the ending part of the hum, and using that hum file with the ending, plop that as a second track in Audacity right below your swings and clashes. If you add the last part of the hum to any sound, and your hum loops perfectly, then the last part of the hum will transition into the first part of the actual hum making it seamless. That's how I unified my own Kit Fisto font.

^ Ok, I thought I saw you sneaking around other boards, so...hey there!

I have actually added the last part of the hum to all other sounds, but did it on the same board has the other sounds were on and not the one below on Audacity. I'm looking fwd to better results armed with this new info, thx!

Hi everyone,

I am brand new to UltraSabers (going to Post Office tomorrow to pick up my first saber!).  I was messing around with sound fonts that I want to load onto my saber, and found that the new launcher accepts the 48000 Hz .wav files.  Is there a reason we need to convert the .wav files to .lsu?

I am sorry if this is a silly question, like I said I'm new.  Thanks!

The obsidian V3 soundboard only takes .lsu files, the obsidian V4 soundboard will take .lsu and .wav files. So if you get the V3 board you'll have to convert .wav to .lsu.

The Obsidian V3 and below requires all files to be LSU. Apparently the new one (V4) takes just about anything. I gotta get my hands on one of those... :)

Any advice here?

In fiddling with it, I found that reducing the speed of the sound to 90% puts it back about where it was.

Ignore the prior post, I figured it out.

At least on my Obsidian, adjusting the Sample Rate on the track itself made it higher pitched and it wouldn't load into the Obsidian sound wizard anyway, complaining that it was the wrong Sample Format.

What worked for me was not to adjust the track, but just set the project to 48000Hz. Save the file uncompressed and it worked just fine.

Hopefully that helps.

(Mods feel free to delete the prior post, because I couldn't figure out how to delete it or edit it)

So you have to do this for every single wave file included in a sound font? Like if I DL'd one I have to do this process for every hum, boot, clash, etc. sound?

So I just did this for a sound font that is native at 22,050 hz and I followed the instructions here and amped it up to 48,000 and it sounds all speed up, high, and just terrible. How do I fix this?

I have three sabers with Obsidian v4 and I'm planning to load some soundfonts from saberforum.com and eventually saberfont.com. However, the Mario soundfont I pulled from FX-Sabers (http://www.saberforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=36680.0) gives me the "uncompressed 16 bit mono at 48000 samplerate" error message when I try loading it into the launcher. Does this mean that I'll have to open them in audacity and edit them down to the correct parameters?

Is this needed for all SaberFont.com fonts as well, since those are rated for Plecter and NEC boards only?

It doesn't have to be a .lsu file for the final product like the instructions say since Angel_Rain's cat font (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=24068.0) is in .wav form, right?

Ive got the most of this down through trial and error, the speed issue was friggin annoying.  but I cant figure out how to get the file size down to get all my old plexter lab fonts to actually fit..how the heck are you all pulling this off? I mean I'm ending up with 5mb files for each font., and that a ton more than each bank itself handles. I just want my Darth maul fonts to work....

Does it only take wavs? That seems strange. I've never had s V3 though only V4 s . I guess you know how to convert though so no problem for you. 👍😊

The sound format that's accepted by the board depends on the Launcher, not on the board type. All versions of the Ultrasabers Launcher can take both LSU and WAV for any soundboard. The older versions (named Obsidian Launcher, not Ultrasabers Launcher) could only take LSU.

Hey there,

Is there any way to perform this conversion in the other direction (ie .lsu to .wav)? I'm trying to create a sound font of my own and I was hoping to listen to some of the soundfonts available at the shop for inspiration, but I can't work out how to listen to .lsu files. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Import the audio files to audacity as "import raw data" - just make sure you choose the correct sampling rate and all that. 48khz and 16 bit

Hi.  I am on a Mac and using the latest US Launcher v2.4.

I am trying to follow these instructions but I am running into two issues.

1.  Most of the pictures from the tutorial (and on the forum in general) have a message saying that I need to "upgrade my account to allow for 3rd party hosting" with instructions to go to photobucket.com/p500. When I go there, it wants me to pay like $400! This doesn't seem right to me and makes it very hard to follow the instructions.  Am I missing something?  I don't see anything in my forum account settings about 3rd party hosting.

2.  The tutorial says to "open the LSU Converter from the Obsidian Launcher folder," but there is no such option in the folder when I go there.

Please advise.  Thanks!

The instructions are easy enough to follow without the missing pictures; don't worry about them.

If you're running the latest Ultrasabers Launcher, there's no need to convert to .LSU; you can take .WAV directly.  Just make sure it is the correct sampling and bit rate.  Also...

I've had good luck just using iTunes to import WAV files as 64 bits, 48000 sample rate, mono. I tag them with metadata (Artist: Obsidian, Album: whatever font name you want to use), copying the folder from my iTunes library to whatever working folder I want to use, then loading them using the sounds wizard in my loader. There are some amazing sound fonts out there.

Audacity is a great solution, too. It doesn't get enough credit for being a powerful digital audio tool as it deserves.
