Title: No religion, no politics.
Post by: Ultra on May 22, 2011, 02:42:16 AM
Nothing will cause more hurt feelings and animosity in some people than a differing opinion in politics and religion.

So please, do not discuss either on this site, don't have it in your sig, do not elude to it at all.  Thanks.

I completely agree with this rule .... but .... isn't the Jedi Order a religion (so said Grand Moff Tarkin)?

Nearly fell foul of this a few days ago. Quickly edited my(political view) entry to comply.
Religious or political belief's have no place here & can only lead to argument where non is necessary.
I would also propose that terms such as " god willing", "thank the lord " , " for christ's sake" and " oh my god" should be considered a minor infraction. Both for the sake of devout christians & long time atheist's alike.

Just my view. What do you think ?

Thanks for your time.

Actually yes Jediism is now a real religion. So any talk relating to the beliefs of the jedi, sith, force or anything involving such(no jedi/ sith/ gray or any code) would also violate this. Especially since they are originally based off of every belief system.  Jedi and Sith are also political soooooooo yeah double whammy on them.

So maybe we should make an exception for religions and politics that exist in the Star Wars Universe?

Yes. I think so. This is SaberForum. So what's the point of this even existing if we can't talk about those who wield them?

I think so, since telling people they can't discuss Jedi and Sith beliefs on a lightsaber forum is a little weird.  ;)

Eh I would still use caution on this. I would say as long as you keep it to the Philosophy trying to avoid any Theology?(This of course it a whole different argument on how exactly to do that).  But it still might show favoritism to those who follow that religion.  I would make one those voting threads about it and let the forum decide on this one issue?

I would like to discuss different people's interpretations of just what the Force means to them, but I'm not so sure some could manage to keep their own personal beliefs out of it, so I'm wary of allowing it here.  Although, I'm pretty sure people discuss the politics in Star Wars on this forum pretty freely already without any discord.

I've had a few conversations about the Force that had to stop because of this rule. So I know what you mean.

New guy here. I'm still cruising around the forum reading and reading. It's vast! I haven't seen any rules so far regarding threadromancy but I'm coming across old stuff and wondering to post or not to post. Seen as this is pinned I'm gonna go for it...

In 2001 in the UK there was a census. The laws regarding census information is that if there are 10,000 people or more claiming to be of the same religion then it will legally be recognised by the state as a religion. 390,000 people declared their religion to be Jedi making it the 4th largest religion in Great Britain.

After the census data had been collected and processed the Office of National Statistics (a government body) later released the figure stating "390,000 Jedi there are."

 :D

Quite right.

I was one of those jedi/Sith  ;D

Just as I was in the 2011 census(decades long consistency).  :P

Unfortunately we dropped a few places in the championship table & no longer beat some of the major religions.   ???

Lets hope for a resurgence next season & perhaps a chance at the 2021 play-offs.

Hehehe

That'd be sweet. I was looking on Wikipedia and there's an MP who since then announced Jedi as his religion as he was being sworn in. Anything is possible when the force is involved.

I read a paper one time on the history of a popular religion. It was spreading slowly slowly until the Romans took it on and it became what is referred to as a 'fighting religion' ie a book in one hand and a sword in the other. The rate that it spread tripled in a matter of decades. Can you imagine 390,001 saber wielding Jedi running loose converting the masses? We'd be numero uno in no time.

I'm trying to avoid making it a hard and fast rule.  For now, let's just avoid creating entire threads dedicated to those kinds of topics ;)

Whoa! I never said I don't like the rules, I was just expressing that I like talking politics. I was just explaining that to Jev Moldara that I get the rules as he explained them and that I won't be talking politics here. I don't think there is any need for you to tell me to leave on my first day here.
I haven't said a single thing political, and due to understanding the rules better I won't be. I was confused about talking about laws being political.
Jev Moldara made it much clearer, and now I know. So lets be friends yeah?

Absolutely; "in-universe" politics, lore and religion should be safe and fun.

I completely agree with this rule Ultra. While I have defined views in both categories and believe in their importance, neither represent the purpose of this community, which I have found to be superb in the short time I've been here. I'm sure we all have plenty of opportunities to debate politics and religion outside of this platform.

The ban on Politics and Religion pertains to those found in this galaxy only, not the ones found a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Just trying to clear up some apparent confusion.

Well that can’t be true because I discussed “Jediism” on this thread and wanted to know how people took George Lucas’ IP and made it into a religion, and my comments were removed and I received a message that I broke a forum rule, per “infiniti01”...

You DID break the rules by discussing an IRL religion and even ridiculing said IRL religion. This should not be so hard to comprehend. I'm sick of having to explain this to people who should know better. This is a simple and easy to understand rule. Anymore trolling, quibbling, or arguing about it will result in bans starting now. If you actually have honest questions about this, PM a mod.
